We are luke-warm on the Salem YMCA. We like the fitness instructors and the front desk staff, but we have had a pretty poor time with youth activities. The swim lessons were very poorly structured and I didnt feel my kids gained anything from their classes last summer. Our youth soccer and flag football experience has been HORRIBLE. We have a son on each team and there has been zero communication from the Y. The first games of the season are tomorrow and we still havent been told what time to be on the field, the kids havent received their uniforms and one of my sons hasnt even had a practice yet. He has shown up twice only to have his coach call and cancel the first practice and then have no one show to the second one because the information didnt get to them. Both evenings my son left in tears because he was so disappointed that he didnt get to participate. And I was pretty irritated that he didnt get to participate either, seeing as I PAID for these practices. At this point it is the parents who are holding the leagues together and making sure the kids are having a positive experience. It is leaving me wondering why I paid a registration fee to the YMCA when I could have just got together with some other parents at the park and let the kids play some pick-up games. It would have been the exact same experience. When I took my concerns to the Y, they were polite, but basically shrugged me off saying they had recently fired their athletic program director and were doing their best. If this is true, then I feel they had a duty to inform the parents/players on the teams about the situation to give us the opportunity to sign our kids up for a functioning sports league someplace else while registrations were still open. I feel that they owe me a refund for both of my childrens registration fees. Unfortunately I was told the only thing they can offer me is a credit towards a future sports season registration....as if I will even enroll my kids in sports here again!

Ive been a Y member for about 6 years. I love playing racquetball there and do so with a great friendly group. If you looking to get into a new sport racquetball is the way to go. However, in the last months they fired a bunch of staff and replace them with new staff. The are not nearly as friendly, or personable. The previous staff even knew my name, but I rarely get a hello when I enter the building. The elevator is constantly not working. I have to carry by one year old up and down the stairs which is very tiring. The ONLY thing that keeps me there is the price. I would switch to the Courthouse if the price wasnt so cheap. Which they seem to be reducing services, but increasing prices so it might not be long before I do switch. Too bad, the YMCA is a staple of the history of downtown Salem and its further going to....crap.

The Salem YMCA may not be in the newest building, but it works for the community. They offer discounted swim lessons for members, and for people who require financial aid. They have staff that is working there because they care about about people. At the YMCA there is a little bit of everything. There is child care, basketball, volleyball, pools, weight rooms, raquetball and handball courts, and much much more. Also, if you are a member, you can get a free personal fitness trainer. I would definitely recommend the YMCA to families, and for people who want to get into shape.

This place is horrible! Signed my daughter up for swimming lessons and we were not fans of the class. Everything was dirty. The pool was tiiny and the space between the wall and pool was so narrow that I felt like I was going to fall in. In my opinion it is not a very safe set up, especially for kids. I called to cancel my daughters swim lessons ( she only attended ONE class ) and they said the only thing they would do is offer me HALF of my money back towards another one of their classes. Absolutely will no go back ever! That is no way to do business.

Ive been a member of this Y for about 10 years. I love it! Yes, the older building does have some challenges, but the programs and staff more than make up for it. The group exercise classes are AWESOME! They make you work hard, but the staff are supportive and help you reach your goals. Ive also met with one of the personal trainers and he is fantastic. Im planning on putting my daughter in swimming lessons soon and cant wait for her to be old enough to try some of the other activities.

Some of the staff is very unprofessional and will lie about program openings and contacting you. I dont mind if a program isnt open even though it is being advertised, i mind being led on to believe that it is open and that i will be able to get in the program only to be lied to have phone calls ignored and finally excuses made in the end. If programs arent opened or youre unsure then dont tell people theyre open. Im talking about the child care coordinator

I like this Y. I never had a bad time in any of the classes. They let you go at your own pace and modify if you need to. I am a sporadic attendee, but never have I been made to feel bad about that. The thing I love most about this gym that you really dont have to be beautiful to go. No posers or pick-ups, just health. It is downtown and there is some strangeness, but I have found that to be harmless. Most of the staff is friendly and energetic.

Poor. I got the run around in trying to pay for my granddaughters day camp. Depending on who I spoke to at the YMCA I received different information of what paper work and documentation I needed to register my granddaughter for camp. It was frustration and took a lot of my time away from work to go in person as they required to complete the registration. Their organization is disconnected between supervisors and staff.

Good price and good facilities however they change their pool hours often (which is the main reason I go) without notice and they dont even inform their employees when they make said changes. Ive 3 pool schedules printed out that I have to throw away because they change the hours some way since... kind of annoying but not annoying enough to take business elsewhere

Ive been a member of the Salem Family YMCA now for over 5 years and use their facilities for hoops, weight room, indoor track, fitness rooms & training facilities and the new pool is spectacular. Its a great deal for a low price and the staff are always incredibly helpful and courteous.

Wonderful place! The gym is not by any means state of the art but they have plenty to choose from, its not crouded, the building is old but has a charm to it, they base membership off of your income as well so anyone can come, they offer all sorts of activites too including sports!

price is competitive, and the variety of services is good. the building itself feels a bit old and in need of upgrading. navigating the maze of stairs and corridors is a challenge at first, but once youre used to where everything is it isnt a big deal. good option for families.
