Did my salon research and noticed this place had a bunch of good reviews so I thought Id give it a try and treat myself to a nice birthday gift... Ive grown out my natural black asian hair for 4-5 years now and decided I wanted to go for a new look. Balayage and ombre seem to be the trend and had plenty of pictures to show EXACTLY what I wanted. So I made an appointment and Mina cut my hair dry so that she could put the color in later... Tell me made me stand up for my haircut half the time... I know Im 411 but that was the first time Ive ever had to stand up for a haircut. Quite embarrassing if I do say so myself. The cut came out alright, she kept my length which was good but I tried explaining to her what I wanted (ombre with balayage highlights) but she just didnt understand. No one in the salon knew what balayage is. So I left and paid for a $35 haircut unhappy hoping Gayla would know what I wanted. Everyone said shes an ombre expert. So I went in the following day showing her pictures of what I wanted and she asked what color I wanted in my hair and gave me some options. I told her caramel and a golden blond (thinking those colors would look like a good transition from black) She gave me REGULAR (90s style) caramel and blond highlights leaving pieces of my natural hair color thinking I wanted 3 different colored highlights (not with the balayage technique) and sat me under a dryer. When I was done, she was going to wash out my hair and I stopped her saying "what about all of this black hair your left out? I wanted it to be ombre, the only part of my hair I wanted to stay black was the top" she was like "Im glad you said something before I washed it, its not too late, I can do it now" so she teased, bleached and foiled the rest of my hair. As she was blowdrying my hair out I noticed it was pretty subtle but not exactly what I wanted. She was also talking to a friend in the middle of styling my hair (turn the blow dryer off and on just to talk to her friend) and seemed rushed to get me out of there. Offered to curl my hair but then realized she didnt have time, I just wanted to get out of there. End up paying $135 for highlights I never wanted in the first place and shitty ombre. I didnt walk out of there happy nor unhappy at the time. I told the people at the desk "i liked it" but really, I was unsure of it. I tipped her $20 anyway for trying. I think everyone there is Russian or something. I dont know but I know that I am NEVER going there again. Its been about a week since I got my hair done there thinking Id like it by now but Im still not satisfied, I have so many black strands that I wanted to be ombre originally. Others may have had a positive experience from Serenity Salon but I know I sure didnt. If you want balayage, this is NOT the place to go to.

Ive been going to Serenity for about 2 years now. I followed Gayla there, as Ive trusted her with my hair for 13 years. Everyone on staff at Serenity is always friendly, and Izzi gave me the best looking, longest lasting gel manicure I ever had. I have long, naturally curly hair that is (naturally) so dark brown its almost black, and I have very resistant gray (which has started to cover more & more of my head over the years :)) Gayla is the only one who gets my color right every single time. Ive had her do everything from under-layers of red (and I mean, CRAYON red) to blonde highlights, to back-to-my-natural all over color. Shes so good that I can just sit in her chair & when she asks me what I want I can reply, "Whatever you think will look best." And I always leave looking like a walking shampoo advertisement! :) PRIOR to my going to Serenity, there had been a handful of times over the years when Gayla was unavailable, so Id get my root cover and highlights done by someone else (NOT anyone at Serenity), and every single time I walked out of those peoples salons with brassy, gold, or orange highlights. One time, it was so bad that I had to return to the salon to have the girl "fix" it, but I still left without my color being anywhere close to what it shouldve been. I always had to count on Gayla to fix it - and she always did so expertly. Not only have I counted on her to do my color for the past 13 years, but shes also waxed and also threaded my eyebrows and done my makeup and hair for my wedding. I always look forward to my appointments with her because not only is she good at what she does (and I mean, come on - who DOESNT want to walk around looking like a shampoo model? :)), but shes just a friendly, happy, person. When I leave Serenity, I feel like Ive had my batteries recharged - everyone who Ive encountered there over the past 2 years has greeted me with a smile, and made sure that I left having a positive experience. ~On a side note -through all of these years, there has only been ONE time that Gayla did my color that I wasnt 110% happy with it, and when I let her know that, she got me in immediately to correct it. When I left, I was 110% happy with it. I bring that up because I noticed some people have given poor reviews and explained that theyve left unhappy with their color. Of course, theyre entitled to their opinions, but its MY opinion that a bad rating isnt fairly warranted when you havent let the salon know that you were unhappy & given them a chance to fix it. ~

Mary asked Marjie her opinion about my hair when I arrived, and Marjie asked her if she had some "#3" because I had a years growth of virgin hair, but a few inches left at the tips of color. Marjie told Mary the 2 different hair types would react to the permanent solution differently, and to be careful. Mary put too much hair on the perm rollers, there were only 5 rollers on each side of my head and they all went in the same direction. Her friend walked up and they began speaking to each other in Persian. Then her friend started putting rollers in my hair, too, which Mary took out and rolled again because she put so much hair on each roller. Marjie must have given Mary some "#3" perm product, which she mixed in front of me and then asked me if I noticed whether or not she mixed the 3 bottles together correctly!!?! Seriously?! I started to panic, I should have taken out those 5 curlers and left! Mary disappeared then for a long time. She returned with different white bottles that didnt look like they were very nice brand. Mary put it on my hair, then took another customer and put her in my chair, so I stood there, having no where else to sit. Mary asked another stylist, who also had a customer, to rinse out the perm solution from my hair. Then Mary asked a 3rd stylist to apply the toner to my hair. The toner was going in my eyes because the 2nd stylist had removed the cotton, and the 3rd stylist chewed her out for it in front of me. Then Mary came to perform the final rinse. Mary had to tear some of my hair off of the curlers, I could hear my hair ripping, it was painful. Back in the chair, Mary seemed confused. She was going to dry it, then she wasnt. Then Mary wanted to cut my hair, No! But she insisted. She asked me how I parted my hair, I said on the side, and she said, "OK, I will part it in the middle." I had to stop her and insist she part it on the side! Mary didnt have any product of her own, so she asked the hairdresser next to her to let her put his product on my hair. Now my hair is burnt and my widows peak is stubs of hair. My scalp is burning, and I cannot wash it for at least 2 days! I do thank the other hairdressers who did Marys work. I am very very sorry I went to Mary and Serenity! My hair looks like something women in the 1960s did at home, but worse, I dont know the damage her perm solutions have done to my scalp, skin and hair. I had read about Serenity on Yelp and the reviews were good. My experience was disgusting!
