S&L Inc. built a town home complex in Saratoga Springs, UT back in 2005. In 2012 we purchased one of the units and moved in with our family. We found the master bedroom to be insanely hot in the summer and freezing cold in the winter. AC and the central heating chugging at full blast couldnt budge the temperatures one way or the other. Finally I climbed up in the attic and found that NO INSULATION had been installed over the master bedroom! I dont mean that there was little insulation or that the insulation had settled down or that it been moved around. I mean the sheet rock above the master bedroom was completely clean, bare, and in stark contrast to the 11" of insulation covering the rest of the house on the other side of the rafters. A layer of sheet rock was the ONLY thing between us and the elements outside. I called up the owner of S&L Inc., Steve Larsen, and asked him if he could help me get the insulation in my attic that never got installed when his company built the home. He told me that 5 years had already passed since he built it and there was nothing he could do about it. If I or someone would have contacted him earlier, "then we could talk about helping you out," was his explanation. Sadly, I bought the home 8 years after its construction... The original owners were a group of individuals who had pooled money to purchase it as an investment during the housing boom and it sat empty. The one family that lived there before us also complained about the master bedroom, but didnt think much about it because all the neighbors in the complex (also built by S&L) had the same issues. Come to find out, no one really has much insulation over their master bedrooms and the attics in general had so little insulation that the fiber glass has settled down to a rating of R-6 or R-8. Luckily no one else had a completely bare slab of sheet rock over the room where they spent their nights freezing or sweating to death. Steve told me who he subbed the insulation work out to and suggested I see if they could help. I found out that the company had gone out of business and been bought up by Superior Insulation. I contacted Superior Insulation, but thats another story and I wont bother you with those details here. After living here a year, we have found other issues with the quality of the construction of our home. My favorite is the beer cans and construction waste that was left in our furnace intake space. Crawling in there and cleaning that out took several hours. If youre looking for a general contractor, dont go to S&L Inc.!
