I need to do two reviews because Aveda aesthetics school is different (better) from the hair/cosmetology school. I would give Aveda aesthetics school 5 stars for both times I have been there. This first review is for the hair-cosmetology side. First of all, the front desk girls need to learn a thing or two about customer service. When making changes to a clients appointments they need to notify the client of the change. My time for my appointments was changed by 15 minutes and they also changed my previously selected stylist for my hair cut. Second, the instructors need to be more engaged on the floor instead of spending their time helping students style their own hair. Third, the students need to be taught how to converse and cut at the same time. My stylist seemed more interested in the conversations of her fellow students than she did with engaging with me, her client. Besides being courteous, if you screw up a clients hair, they will be nicer to you if they have a rapport with you. Fourth, students need to learn how to cut hair by how someones hair is, not by the text book. They also need to have more instruction from the floor instructor and the floor instructor needs to be a better stylist than the students. The instructor tried to tell me that my hair was poking out like a chipmunk got at because thats the way my hair is. Weird, because I have been to Seasons salon, Vivesque and Taylor Andrews Academy with my short pixie hair and havent had this problem. Its all how the stylist cut it. She didnt cut with the grain of hair, she cut against it. Im 41 and have had my hair cut by many stylists over the years and never had someone tell me that its my fault my hair looks weird, basically. Lastly, if you are looking for a relaxing shampoo experience, think again. They will barrage you will their ads on three big screen TVs. My suggestion for Aveda Institute is that they turn those on to lovely scenery with soothing sounds like running water and birds chirping. The continuous loop of the same commercial for their botanical oil was very annoying. I will likely not get my hair cut there again. Now if youre looking for an awesome facial. Go there. Honestly, I have paid buck at a spa up in SLC and Avedas institute has topped those facials twice now. My aesthetician and her instructor ensured that my experience was great from start to finish. First of all, the placement of the rooms is excellent because they are far removed from the hustle and bustle, ensuring peace and tranquility. Secondly, they really took the time to talk with me about my skin needs and product. Third, the products they selected for my sensitive skin were excellent. Fourth, she made sure throughout the facial that the warmth was just right and the products were not irritating for my skin. They were very thorough and professional. As well as engaging and complimentary of my skin, even with my rosacea. She also gave me tips on what to do and use at home to help my skin look better without being overly pushy of Avedas tre expensive products; which I appreciated. This was my second facial there and I will definitely book another one.

Im sad to say that I had a really horrible experience with the product and the staff at Aveda Institute in Provo. I had heard Aveda products were more natural, but either they are awful or my stylist left them on too long, because my hair is now fried, it feels like straw. Also, dont be tempted to go to a school because they have cheaper prices, I paid almost double the listed price for an awful partial weave, because they needed more product. I understand needing more product if the hair is longer, but mine is very medium length and has taken one bowl in previous salons, and my stylist spilled a bowl of product on the floor and charged me for it anyway. Also the girl who did my hair was very unprofessional, talking with her stylist friends about things that probably should be left out of a professional setting and not listening to me when I said the water was too hot and she was brushing my hair too hard. She also did some major salon no-nos, such as dropping a comb on the gross, hair covered salon floor, picking it up and continuing to use it on my hair! When she was washing my hair I had water literally running down my face, into my eyes and down my shirt in the back and front, she obviously did not know what she was doing. Also, at the beginning of my appt. I let my stylist know I had somewhere to be in around 1 pm (my appointment was scheduled at 9am, so I didnt think it would be a problem) and I didnt get out of the salon until 1:30, and I was leaving with still wet hair. Honestly I will never be coming back to Aveda Institute, which makes me sad because I had heard from a friend that Aveda products were really natural and good for your hair. Worst hair salon experience I have ever had, do your hair a favor and go to a normal (not school) salon, your hair will turn out better for the same price and you will be in and out in way less time. Do not go to Aveda!!

The best advice I can give is be very persistent in what you want, because in my experience there they will try to bully you into accepting what you got and leaving to clear up the seat for the next customer. I went in to get makeup done for wedding pictures and was enticed by the low prices. I figured that even though they were students, they are in a school that teaches them makeup skills and thus they would be more knowledgeable than I am. I showed them a picture of what I wanted and told them it was wedding pictures, so the makeup had to be natural. It went well until the actual makup application (they give a brief massage before beginning a session which was enjoyable). They drew on thick black eyebrows (I have brown hair, so it looked extremely bad) and dramatic black and white eyeshadow that wasnt blended at all (the picture I showed them had light brown to dark brown eyeshadow). It was shocking that they thought this actually looked good; other students and supervisors walked by and complimented them on a job well done. When I asked them to correct it, they seemed to be annoyed that I was asking for something different than what the picture showed, even though the picture clearly did not look like what I ended up with. The most frustrating thing was that they didnt want to fix their mistakes, they tried to tell me to keep the makeup as it was because "makeup washes out in pictures." While that may be true, it was still too dark and dramatic for what I wanted, and it was incredibly frustrating that they did not listen to what I was asking. I went home and had to wash it all off and do the wedding makeup myself. I would suggest if you do come here, be very firm in what you want, and dont give up and leave unhappy like I did- make it worth the money that you spend.

My wife went here and really enjoyed her experience. She liked the atmosphere and made some really good friends. But when the time came to take the state board she and several other girls in her class all failed multiple times. She contacted the school multiple times asking for help to prepare for it, and every time she did they said they would see what they could do or that an educator would be willing to help her study. But when it came down to it they did nothing!!! The state board changed as of Jan 1, 2017. So she asked if they would help her prepare for the new requirements. All they did was offer to let her come in and watch a training video that she said was very vague. We finally paid for a two day class at The Forum in American Fork, UT that prepared her for the test. After this class she was completely ready and was able to pass the state board. Long story short multiple people in her class and the one after hers had a good amount of failures and Aveda did nothing to help them pass! You would think that a school charging $20,000 would do all they could to help you. I would recommend looking at other schools and asking what their policy is for helping people pass after a failure.
