How much do I like and trust CarScope and Dyrell Hicks for my car maintenance? Well, I live in Northern Virginia, a 3.5 hour drive away (I have family in Chesapeake), and every time the last 13 years Ive need heavy-duty maintenance, I plan a long weekend just to drive down and have this shop do the work. So heres the story. My father is a tested auto mechanic himself. As a teenager he would trick out his own cars for drag racing, and grew up on farms fixing all manner of engines. He was also a Navy mechanic on aircraft for 20 years, with a second career in truck driving, which also included doing much of his own maintenance. Some years ago, the late 90s, he first discovered Dyrells shop and starting taking his cars there, after he was getting older and couldnt keep up with the newer cars and do the work himself. My dad was impressed with Dyrells work and recommended him. The first time I used Dyrells services was back in 1999. I had a beat up old truck, and was in college at the time, so did not have lots of extra cash or time to fix it myself. One of the pistons got stuck, the flywheel was cracked, and even the crankshaft was shot. I made a deal with Dyrell to take the truck off my hands in return for waiving his work to that point and I simply bought a used car in much better condition. (Both me and my Dad confirmed all the work that was needed, my Dad was the one who noticed the piston was stuck when I first drove up, and it was obvious what else was wrong from my own inspections, so Daryell was perfectly honest in his assessment.) Since then, Ive taken my cars for heavy maintenance, including timing belt replacements, radiator swaps, etc. The largest recent work I had Dyrell do was to replace my manual clutch. I couldnt believe how well a job he did - the clutch was so tight and spot-on, it responded better than it did out of the factory (this was a new car I got after the previous used one). Ive put almost 40K miles on it since then and its still just as good as the day I drove it out his shop. Additionally, I know how conscientious Dyrell is, as this car is a foreign, Korean car and has a weird style of clutch that he had never worked on before. He and his son did a lot of extra work just to get it right, way over what he quoted me, but he still charged me only his original quoted price, and chocked up the difference to gaining experience and teaching his son. It’s important to understand this is a family business, so Dyrell loses a lot of potential income from having to train his own staff, and he does not pass that on.

I dont usually take time out to do these. However, I feel compelled this time for 2 reasons: First off, if I had not read the other reviews I likely would not have ended up using this mechanic. I gave credence to the words and gave them a call. From that initial call to the time I picked up my car, 3 words come to mind: Courteous, consistent and convenient. I had previously (for the exception of purchasing tires) ONLY used the dealership I purchased my car from for any service. There were things that made me feel restless about continuing in that vein. CarScope gave me a good feeling from the initial phone call. The little things DO matter! Probing questions about my concern, giving options, telling me to come by at my convenience so they could make confirmation of a factor, all gave me the indication of how they operate. My cars issue was resolved. It was just a few days ago but I will remain optimistic. They made sure to convey to me that I can follow-up if it not. Looks like they have gained a new customer.

About 2 years ago, my van stopped working due to a cracked head gasket. My repair shop (at the time) did not do those repairs & recommended that I take it to CarScope. I had it towed there & was very pleased with the service. It was very expensive, but it would have been no matter where I took the car. They were very upfront about all of the expenses & it was cheaper than buying a whole new car. They offered to shuttle me around while my car was with them, which was nice. I have not had any problems with the repair they did. About a year ago a friend of mine had engine problems with her car that the dealership told her were unrepairable & that she would have to just buy a new car. I recommended that she take it to CarScope & they were able to fix it for much less than I expected such a major repair (supposedly unrepairable) to cost. I found everyone there very polite & friendly. I would recommend them & use their services again.

New review: CarScope continues to provide outstanding service with the personal touch. I have used CarScope a few times now and the team there really does care about what they are doing. The service has been great and the cost very reasonable. I recommend CarScope to everyone I meet. Previous review: I would like to thank Dyrell and his team for their excellent service. Being new to the region, it is always a concern to find a fair and honest mechanic. I found one in Carscope. My vehicles needed extensive repairs and the guys at Carscope were able to do everything in a timely manner and at a decent cost. They showed a genuine interest in my vehicles and put in that extra effort that makes a difference in business today. I could go anywhere to get my vehicles fixed but I will be back to Carscope because they earned my continued patronage. Thanks guys.

Darrell at CarScope warned me that my friends diagnosis of my cars problems may not actually be correct but to bring it in and he would fix what was causing the vibration in my tires as I drove. He was right! He took me on a short test drive and identified the problem quickly. He gave me a few options that would fix the car both for long term or short term fixes. He helped me to understand what was happening every step of the way. Every one there at CarScope is helpful and pleasant to deal with. I am thrilled that my car was fixed so excellently! Darrell even fixed my dripping windshield so it only rains outside my car now :) I highly recommend CarScope to anyone who needs service.

Overpriced..he had me pay almost 300 dollars for a starter coil which I was going to do myself but when he had found out i was shopping around repeatedly called my girlfriend telling her how he could have charged more for the diagnostic and that I needed special tools to do it myself...when I found out its only an unhook and hook back together job. He also used a stop leak on my car without my permission..which can cause more permanent damage after an only temporary fix. And to top it off I get repeated follow ups through my email to come and get other services from him. He may do a few things for cheap but anything more complicated than oil changes are worth taking elsewhere
