ON Sunday the 24th of August our toilet float assy in the main bathroom quit working. The water just kept running. I could not get the shut off valve to stop the water completely so I had to call a plumber. John answered the phone and made arrangements to be there in 1 1/2 hrs. He called and let us know he was stuck in traffic so it was another hour before he got there. John and the other plumber showed up, showed me how to stop the water at the shut off valve and proceded to say they would be replacing the float assy and flapper valve ...360.00!!!!! less a senior citizen discount of 75.00...thats crazy!!! When my face showed surprise the other one said "thats cheap!" They proceeded to repair the toilet and leave, done in 15 minutes. I have replaced the same type of items in many toilets in my life, my issue was I didnt want to cut off water to the house and thought the shut off was bad also. These parts were less than $25.00 and I assume plumbers get paid $25.00 an hour so we are up to $75.00...thats one hell of a profit for a 15 minute job. Then to make matters worse, the float assy was defective so it has started running again that evening at some point. Water ran ALL NIGHT!!! The next morning (Monday) I called them again and they came back out and said themselves it must be defective. Put in another float assy (same kind). Before I got off work the next day (Tuesday) it was running again. Needless to say I was hot when I called them. They said they could not make it that day and would be back sometime Wednesday. They were saying alot of other plumbers had been complaining about getting defective parts from a particular warehouse and this would be their proof. When they called today to let us know what they had already told us the night before about how busy they were and how it was the warehouses fault for selling a bad batch of parts, when we told them we had already been told that, they said "Dont get an attitude with us!" REALLY???? I will NEVER NEVER NEVER hire them again nor will I recomend them to ANYONE!!! POOR QUALITY SERVICE!!! Since when is it the customers fault that you have to come 3 times to fix a 15 minute job because YOU BUY CHEAP PARTS!!!

My elderly parents 7 year old heat pump stopped working this past spring. They called A-1 because they received a reward from the Daily press for there good service. Douglas Jackson was the tech that came to their house. He was rued and had an attitude, like he was being bothered. My parents were told that they needed a new heat pump and that it would cost $6,000. My parents accepted. Douglas came back out a week later to replace the unit and told them that their thermostat was not compatible and that it would have to be replaced at an additional cost. My parents, not knowing any better, agreed. Douglas did not have a thermostat with him, so he would have to come back in a couple of days. A weeks have past and unanswered phone calls later they still havent heard from Douglas. My parents told me about this and I went to the office in Newport News to let them know of this problem and that I was unhappy about how things are being handled. My parents did hear from Doulas the next day and an appointment was made for the next day. Douglas came out and hooked up the new thermostat and assured my parents that everything is now working fine. Here we are 5 months later. My parents turn on the heat and the heat is not working. My parents call for an appointment. Douglas comes out. Douglas charged them $500 to hook up a wire to the thermostat. Something that should have been done 5 month ago. I am so angry that they would take advantage of elderly people. My father has call numerous time to ask about the charges and still can not get anyone to call him back.

Complete FRAUDS!!! Everything about this experience dealing with the HVAC team was a disaster. First off the punctuality guarantee that the website states THEY NEVER HONORED!!. My appointment was set up for 10am. At 2pm I called and spoke with Debbie and she left a message for the HVAC Supervisor John to call me back. In the mean time at 2:45 a technician arrives. He was extremely unprofessional, rude and complaining that "This wasnt even supposed to be his appointment". He then said that a wire and the motor was burnt out and charged $500 for parts that were still under manufacturers warranty and basically rushed away after the payment was received. After reviewing the invoice I was not given Military discount nor the Punctuality guarantee. After waiting over a week and several attempts to contact John the supervisor, he finally called and resolved nothing. He lied about the service that was done, talked bad about the tech and said that they were going to do something about him and said he would reverse the charges. He lied about all of it and when I finally got a hold of him 2 weeks after the initial incident and asked him about it he hung up in my face. I even took it another step and called a few other HVAC repair companies and they gave me quotes from as low as $295-$385. This company is a total RIP-OFF. Do not be fooled by there FALSE ADVERTISING about catering to Military. Dont let them get you!!

When our upstairs AC wouldnt pump cool air, I called our usual HVAC company (name not included) for service. Thought I just needed a refrigerant charge. They couldnt get to me for two weeks! I contacted A-1 American and they sent out a tech the next day. Stafford arrived on time and did a thorough inspection of the system, including climbing up into the hot attic. It turned out that the coil was rusted out and leaking coolant. Stafford did a great job of explaining what the problem was and the options for repairing or replacing the system. Based on his input, I decided that the best option was replacing the whole system. It was 28 years old and it had served me well. Stafford and his capable assistant started the next day. In two work days, they removed and installed the system. What amazed me was everything had to go though a 2-1/2 foot by 2-1/2 foot ceiling opening in a bedroom closet! Many kudos to Stafford. His professional manner, work ethic, and ability to articulate what was required for repair made what could have been an exasperating experience bearable. Kudos as well to the front office staff; very easy to work with. I recommend A-1 American without hesitation.

First they tried to charge me $525 to replace a connector in the AC unit. The service guy told me the part was between $220 and $240. Granger carries the part in stock for less than $20 retail! When A1 installed the part, the failed to tighten the 240v lead so it arched out 3 weeks later. Called another company to install the part correctly because I cant trust A1 to for anything now. The other company relplaced the part in 30 minutes for a little over $100 and warranted for a year compared to A1 warrantee of 90 days. A1doesnt have their own techs, they subcontract their work and the workmanship shows. Called A1 about the incident and the lady hung up on me saying they would have fixed it free for the shoddy workmanship. I think they would have told me another story to bilk their customer for more $$$. Customer no more! This is a ripoff company and I have all the documentation to back up my issues. Use a reputable firm. BTW, you cannot write a review on their site without a password they will not give unhappy customers!
