January 29th I received a phone call from the city stating that they had not received the paperwork. I also received a voicemail from A-1 asking me to call them. I called A-1 and spoke to the receptionist. She informed me that the tech didnt realize that he was inspecting two devices, and that he only charged me for one. She stated that I owed them another $149. I told her that I disagreed, since I asked her specifically what the price was for both devices when I made the appointment, and the invoice specifically detailed the inspection was for both devices. We went back and forth about it, and she transferred me to the office manager. The manager and I then got into an argument about the price. She threatened to send only one of the forms to the city, since in her opinion, I only paid for one backflow inspection. I told her that I was not paying them anymore money, that the invoice specifically detailed the work that was done included both devices, and the invoice was a contract from them stating that the work done was paid in full. The office manager hung up on me. Later in the day, January 29th I received a call from Jimmy, who stated he was the owner of A-1. We began another conversation about the inspection. Jimmy told me that the tech that came out on Monday was new and did not know that the price was $149 per device. I stated again that that didnt make sense because I had two prior invoices that detailed the same inspection for $149. He said that the other tech who did the inspections the two years before was "probably just hooking me up" but the actual price should have been $149 each. He told me he would cut me a deal, and if I sent him a check for another $75 he would call it even, send the paperwork, and even give me the same deal next year. I told him I was not paying him another dime. He got angry and said "fine Ill send the paperwork, but we dont want your business again." I agreed and made him state again that he would send the paperwork that afternoon. He agreed and hung up on me. January 30th I received a call from the city in the morning stating that they had not received the paperwork and that my water was going to be shut off. I went to my store to verify the water was off & immediately drove to 516 S. Military Hwy, the office of A-1, to speak to Jimmy. I was buzzed into the office, and I asked to speak to Jimmy. I was told he was in a meeting. After waiting for twenty minutes, I stood up to ask one of the people in the office how much longer it would be. A lady sitting at a desk was startled because she did not notice me before, and asked who I was. I stated that I was waiting to speak to Jimmy. She asked repeatedly what I wanted, and I told her that I was an unhappy customer who wanted to talk to Jimmy about some paperwork that he said he was going to send to the city the day before. She apparently was the person I spoke to the day before, because she realized who I was and immediately started cursing at me and yelled for Jimmy. Jimmy came out of the adjacent room, and after she told him who I was, he immediately screamed at me to get out, threatened to call the police, and threatened to fight me. I asked him why he lied to me about sending the paperwork, and reminded him that he promised me he would send the paperwork. He stated "Im not sending the city anything." and again screamed at me to leave. I left the building immediately. I called my landlord and told them what was happening. They gave me a number to a plumber that they contract with, and that plumber called Stephen Motley from the city of VA Beach, so that he could turn the water back on and we could complete the inspection. The plumber arrived at my store within the hour, and the inspection was completed again. I faxed the paperwork to the city, and the problem was resolved. I have all dated documentation, recordings and notes of this incident as proof.

Beware! A-1 caused damaging flooding from water heater and charged 50% more than quoted price on an invoice! Do not use A-1 Sewer and Drain! On March 15, A-1 Sewer and Drain was called to stop a hot water heater leak in our utility room. A-1 was called because of their availability and ability to respond to our emergency. Jason, the plumber showed up, assessed the situation, and attempted to isolate the water heater. Unfortunately, he incorrectly replaced a valve that he thought was the isolation. He left the pipe downstream of that valve cut and uncapped. He then secured city water from the street and drained the water heater. Thinking that the problem was solved, Jason restored city water. Prior to leaving, he confidently quoted us for the replacement of the water heater, wrote it on the invoice, and even asked if we wanted to write a check that evening for the quoted price along with the cost of the service call. We paid the cost of the emergency service and said we would pay the quoted price after the water heater is replaced the next day. Unknowingly, when Jason restored the city water, recirculation through the heating system was refilling the water heater well after he left, overnight. Once the water heater filled the next day, the water spewed from the uncapped valve on top of the water heater. This resulted to a worse flooding in the utility room that went well beyond the initial damage. We spent that whole day trying to dry the room and prevent mold. After the water heater was installed the next day by a different plumber, John, he priced the installation 50% more than what we were quoted by Jason. When we discussed the disparity with the owner, Jimmy D., instead of honoring the previous written price, he attempted to make us pay 50% more than what was technically agreed upon. He claimed that the system installed was better than what was initially quoted because they allegedly did not know that our water heater also heats the second floor of the house and thus required an upgraded system. In fact, it was mentioned to Jason that night, that the water heater heats the second floor of the house. Given that they showed up with the upgraded water heater the next day, presumably based on the requirements provided the night before, there is no reason to put the burden on us if the initial price quoted was incorrect. Being non-plumbers, we would have not known that a better system was being installed, and that our decision to have them replace our water heater was really based on their quote. His explanation included that he was an honest Christian man and that everyone always paid and that no one ever questioned the charged price. Bottom line. A-1 produces poor workmanship and has a weak level of knowledge with hot water systems. They have caused more damage instead of fixing the leak problem. The company also conducts deceitful activity by quoting a price, then upon completion of work, charges way more. Do not use A-1 Sewer and Drain if you want quality honest service!

Plumbers Name: Tom --- I had a drain problem in both of my bathrooms and in the kitchen sink. My home warranty company was contacted and 2 days later some goof ball plumbing company showed up at 9pm to fix my drains, needless to say 2 hours later I still had a drain problem and goof ball plumbing company is now telling me I need to pay them $1000 to install clean-outs so that the problem could be corrected. I was assured that there was no other way to fix my drains. Goof ball plumbing company was told to beat it and left with out collecting a penny from me. The following morning I called A-1 Sewer & Drain Plumbing & Heating. On the phone, I was pleasantly greeted, and then allowed to tell my story. The call taker (please forgive me I do not recall her name) told me that she still had 1 of her master plumbers in the shop and that I could explain my situation to him and get his opinion. The gentleman (like I said Im bad with names) gave me a few probable scenarios based on my description and was able to give me a ball park cost estimate over the phone. After speaking to him I no longer felt overwhelmed with the situation and I agreed to have them send out a plumber to get me straight. I was told that the plumber would be out at 12PM that same morning, and at 12PM Tom was knocking on my door. Tom was great!( A-1 plumbers where clean uniforms, put booties on their shoes prior to entering the house, and are complete professionals). I showed Tom the problems, and he quickly went to work. He inspected the plumbing under the house and came back to me with a plan of action. Long story short, Tom had my plumbing issues fixed in just over an hour, and he did not even need to install any clean outs. The price was reasonable. So if you need a plumber and a company you can trust, these guys and gals are it!!! Thank you A-1 Sewer & Drain Plumbing & Heating
