Hold on tight because this is going to be a gnarly review... So to begin, I definitely joined this gym because my friend said it was inexpensive ($20 a month), there was a wide variety of equipment, and the boot camp workout class was dope. Online, the gym also advertises something about the first six weeks being free so I figure I would give it a try. I walk in the first day expecting to just try it out for size and Im given a tour and a sit down session to sign up. I had my mind on getting started straight away so perhaps my haste got in the way of logic, but the process of signing up is pretty rushed and a lot of things are glossed over. I felt a little bullied into signing up and shame on me for not being more courageous and sticking up for myself. When I rushed in to sign up for me and my husband and thought about the total, I pumped the breaks and said that I should maybe wait for him to get the tour. The staff member who signed me up wanted me to call my husband who was sleeping off a cold and when I said no, things instantly changed. The entire interaction from there went from "excited lets get you signed up" to "lets just get this over with because it sounds like you arent even going to stick around so why should I waste my time." I walked away that day spending nearly $200 for the registration fee AND the first and last month of membership. Yikes. The next time I went in was to meet with my "trainer." I did the whole body composition deal with him and he asked me, "what do you not like about your body?" Im a PE teacher so while Im no size 2 model, Im pretty comfortable with myself and I was looking more for a routine to maintain a healthy lifestyle. Again, I felt like I was wasting his time and it was uncomfortable to be there. But before leaving, I spent nearly another $100 for "necessary supplements." Again, shame on me for not advocating for myself. I set up the next meet up and said I might need to move some things around, but that I would give a heads up should something be unchangeable. Two days before the next meet up my mother in law has a bad reaction to her chemo therapy so I call in to say that I cant make it to the meeting. No one ever called me back. Today I went in to quit and surprise surprise, another payment of nearly $200 is requested. However, the staff member who helped me cancel my membership was cordial and explained everything eloquently. He should probably be the one who signs people up because he wasnt pushy, he was real. Thats my story and I will never suggest this money hole to anyone who doesnt have the time and funds to waste on this gyms shenanigans. Peace. Join the YMCA instead.

Im not sure about these other reviews but I have been really impressed with Emerald City Athletic Club. I am there 6 days a week, during the week at 5:30 am. There are people cleaning every morning. The pool area/sauna and steam room are cleaned daily... and the floors in the work out areas as well as the locker rooms as well... You are going to get out of this gym what you put into it. I have been working with a personal trainer, Tyler, since November and he is great! He earned my trust early on and I have had awesome results. He is motivating, supportive, and he knows his stuff! Im am an older person (51) and he doesnt let me use that as an excuse and he has pushed me harder and Im doing more physically then I have EVER done in my life. There are many other benefits to this gym...they have great classes, and we are just finishing a Biggest Looser Fitness challenge. Hayden has been one of my team captians and is a great addition to my work out plan with Tyler. Ive watched the trainers support the folks in the gym when Ive been there - and its been awesome. Boot Camp is also a great tool in getting fit - these Saturday session are always different and ALWAYS a challenge. The other thing Im impressed with is the GenFit program that they offer - to help our community and youth learn about fitness to help fight obesity. The gym is kind of crazy on the weekends because families are encouraged to work out together - i think its great! No place is perfect - not every trainer is going to be a perfect fit for everyone - but they will work with you to find someone who is a good fit. The equipment is in good order, and there are so many different choices of way to work out you can find your niche-and not every gym is going to be a good fit for everyone. This is an older building that i think has been kept up well - and the new owners continue to improve the facility. I had no suprises with my membership. I did upgrade because I wanted to take advantage of all it had to offer but I didnt feel the pressure to do so. This place gets heavy use, and so there will be times when things need repair or a piece of equipment is down for repair..it happens- However, I reported a problem, and it was fixed right away. Over all I have been very satisfied - come check it out for yourself and see....

A little background about me; Ive been around gyms for quite a while now and used to manage a small, private, top of the line Anytime Fitness facility in an upscale neighborhood. That being said, my standards are fairly high. I now travel a lot so Ive gotten a lot of exposure to different gyms across the country. The good: This place has a TON to offer and the price cant be beat. For $25 per month (month to month first and last up front) you get full access to classes, cardio equipment, a pool, sauna, racquetball courts, an indoor track, basketball courts, basically everything Ive ever seen in a gym. If you are a weight lifter, the gym is extremely well equipped. LOTS of circuit equipment, benches, dumbbells that go up to 120#s, and all kinds of specialty plate loaded equipment as well. If you want a gym with a squat rack, leg press, hack squat, lying and seated leg curl, donkey calf, standing calf, and a multitude of other specialty pieces of equipment, this place seems to have it all (I really cant list everything). The staff was extremely friendly. I tried getting prices for a week pass (how long Im in town) from a few of their competitors and got the usual run-around, "come in today for free and well see if we can work something out." I dont need a 45 minute sales pitch, I need to get in, get out, and get on with my life. Signing up took about 5 minutes and they gave me a quick tour of the facility so I knew where most everything was. The stuff I couldnt find I asked about and the trainers were quick to jump up and help me. The bad: If you are new and intimidated by gyms, you would likely be intimidated by the folks working out (so be ready for it when you walk in). Lots of grunting, flexing, etc in the weight area. Also it is definitely not the cleanest facility. There are paper towel dispensers throughout the club with sanitizer but about half the folks use them. In addition, there are not a lot of weight trees so plates seem to either just get left on equipment or on the floor. Finally, it does seem to get pretty crowded. Theres a lot of cardio equipment, so waiting for that shouldnt be an issue, but it gets a little trickier if you need to find a bench for db rows, presses, etc. All in all, a positive experience. Best of luck in your health and wellness goals!
