AVOID AT ALL COSTS!!!!!! Blatant thieves with absolutely no regard for families experiencing tragedy. They will lie and take full advantage of you once they have your loved one in their facility. The owner, Mr. Crosby, even admitted to me when I confronted him in these words: "You are correct. I deliberately misled you." This is what happened. My beloved Mother passed away in a Los Angeles after a long 5 week hospitalization. My sister lives in the Bay Area and was 8 months pregnant at the time. Therefore, she was unable to be present when my mom passed away. However, she wanted to pay her respects so we looked up mortuaries in the Burlingame area. This one seemed nice after seeing it on google and not seeing any reviews. BIG MISTAKE! I called and explained our situation. Mr. Crosby was very gentle on the phone and his price quotes were extremely reasonable. He said he would arrange for my moms body to be picked up by a funeral home in LA where his company would transport her to the Bay Area. The embalming would be about $800 (which I agreed to) and he gave me a quote of $4,000, which included transport up north, embalming, beautification and preparation at his mortuary, small ceremony and transport to a crematorium for cremation. He specifically said ALL OF THESE THINGS would be included in teh $4,000. I thought this was reasonable so I agreed over the phone. A few days later, after my moms body had been transported there, I arrived to see her and to make payment in preparation for the funeral. We had already picked the date for the funeral and instructed friends and family when and where it would be. Upon meeting Mr. Crosbys receptionist (who was extremely nice) she gave me a quote of nearly $7,000!!! I was baffled so I asked to speak to Mr. Crosby because there must have been some mistake. He said that he felt that this price of $6,900 was fair and that we should be happy with it. Furthermore, he stated that if we didnt like it, "we could take our mom somewhere else." What a $%#$#$#$#%R#%!!! Can you imagine having someone say that to you when your mom passed away just a few days ago right in front of you???? I wanted to get up and strangle the guy!! But for the sake of my family and my mom, I kept my calm and simply asked him why he didnt just tell me it would be this much over the phone. He stuttered and essentially came to the same conclusion that this was now the price, take it or leave it. So I asked him, "So you intentionally misled me?" And HE ADMITTED, "Yes, I intentionally misled you." NOT AN EXAGGERATION!!!!!!!! Im telling you. I could not make this up if I tried. I thought about so many ways to get back at that guy. You have no idea. But I figured that the best way would be to post reviews EVERYWHERE because if even ONE PERSON who would have gone there reads this and takes my advice, Crosby would lose out on the money that he cheated me out of. That guy is an unscrupulous piece of garbage and I hope his business goes into the gutter. Heed my warning and read reviews before you pursue a mortuary/funeral home.

Ive lived in San Mateo my entire life, coming up 38 years now... I have now used Crosby n Gray four times and have never had any problems. John Crosby and his staff are the sweetest most genle people you can ask for at such a hard time in ones life. They staff have been there sine I was a child going to St Catherines in Burlingame. I think that says a lot about a company when there isnt much of any turn over in a local run company. They are of the oldest run businesses in the area and Ive recommended them time and time again.
