The days of 121 College Square Pep Boys being a reputable place are no more. My father went to it for over 20 years. Not to many years ago, we started noticing we were being lied to more and more often when it came to car repairs. Estimates used to be close to what the final bill was. But they increasingly got more greedy and costly. This year, my father got very sick and was paralyzed. I really needed to have his car fixed to use it, and we were also very low on money. I was quoted a price of about $160 for one belt and ask if I wanted another changed. I said no. But they changed it anyway and did things I did not ask for. Then there were extra fees for the mechanic or something like that. I dont exactly remember, but the price soon soared up over roughly $440. All prices here are rough. I had to argue to convince them I shouldnt have to pay for the other belt. The price was brought back down but only to $320. I talked to the tech manager, Adam(pretty sure this is his name), on the phone and we agreed on something like $220. I went to pick it up, and he was not there, and some other guy was telling me it was about $380 again. Obviously they were trying over and over to see if I would accept the higher rip off price. I said Im not paying it! He went to the back, came back and finally charged me $240. At that point, I figured close enough, but I was still nearly $100 over what we originally agreed to. I was also lied to about which transmission fluid to use. It was the correct one, but was the most expensive the store had and wasnt necessary. Then I decided to get a price on having gas drained out of a tank of another car that sat for a few years. They wanted $500 just for" environmental fees" to get rid of the gas. I said I wanted to keep the gas and he didnt think theyd do it that way. I could see they were starting their games up again. I just said, thanks, but no thanks and am now trying to do the job my self. When I go to recycling, its FREE for me to get rid of the gas by the way. I mean, I could go on. Everything I go to get repaired at this place they jack the price up sky high. Im embarrassed this store is in our town. Now when I need repairs, I avoid the place because its just too tiring to deal with them playing with prices etc.

· This would be 0 stars if it would let me!! Im sick and tired of companies advertising something and doing another. There are a total of 4 signs up in this store with large print saying "Free Battery Installation" a small note says "see store associate for details". Even when selecting the battery with the help of the people at the battery counter I asked if they installed them for free and was told "yes, just see the guy at the service desk". So after making my purchase I take the newly purchased $150 battery to the service desk to ask them to come out to install it for me and Im told I have to purchas a service plan for them to do it for "free". WHAT?! The battery has a 72 month warranty what service plan could I possibly need? So I asked why do all the signs say its free and the ASSociate kindly points out the small note on the sign that says "see store associate for details" and their attitudes about this when I asked tells me that they have this issue a lot. Both managers I spoke with had bad attitudes, they are clearly not concerned with how their customers feel about their store. So let me get this right. The sign says free installation *see for details, and the details are I have to pay, huh? I dont care what anyone says thats a rip off!! I drove past Auto Zone and Advanced who both actually do install for free (I know because after this I called and asked and they both said yes theyd do it for free no problem) just to come to Pep Boys because they advertised the "free" service so much I wanted it installed right away before the one in my car left me stranded. Thankfully I was able to make it back with the bad battery and get someone to install the new battery for me when I got home. I had both of my kids with me, had I broken down on the way home this review would probably be a page or two long. If youre thinking about using this store for anything, please do yourself a favor and dont!!!

I walked in, took about 10 minutes to be greeted by a service rep, Garry.By the way there was no one in front of me. I guess phone service gets priority over walk ins. ANYHOW that is not why I am giving it two stars. So after Garry got off the phone, I asked him if they had time to do an emergency balance on two wheels that are off the car. Basically put them on the balance machine and knock some weights into them. The wheels were already off the car. I was even willing to pay DOUBLE!! The response I received was "No, we cannot help you right now. There is a 4 hour wait"... The phone rang again and he answered it right away. I waited another 5 minutes... When he got off I explained the situation again and how it was only two wheels that just needed to be balanced! Still NO.... I do not understand why it would take 4 hours to balance just two wheels! I understand they were busy or they say. I did not see any customers waiting. I was willing to wait but definitely not 4 HOURS. It was not reasonable at all... On top of that there was two "techs" just joking and playing around by the service desk. I even heard the manager go like dont you have something to be working on?? In the end, I ask to speak with the manager. I think his name was Jason. He was more intelligent but rude. He agree that it would not take 4 HOURS to do two wheel balances. He said I had to wait about 2 hours through.. In the end I walked away. They were willing to turn down an easy $30 for balance... I drove down the street and found a place called Barbour Automotive. They did it on the spot for $20. Judging by the reviews here this place needs help. I hope pepboys corporate reads this and trains the employee at this location. Pepboys has always been good to me @ other locations, but judging from this location i think I will avoid them from now on. I think WALMART has better service than this...

Over the month of July I had several issues with my 1999 Jeep Cherokee. I had to go to repairs shops 4 times in one month. 3 of which were to this college square pepboys. The first 2 times I went there, it was for 1) air sensor in my tail pipe, 2) dead battery. These two times were decently quick and fairly priced with coupons to help with service charges. The big sucker punch was last. At the end of July my Jeep blew a head gasket, and had to be towed from middle of no-where USA back to Newark. The PepBoys tow truck system was slow to get a tow truck to me, but the operator was very nice (a contracted company). I dropped it off at 3pm on a Saturday, and the shop was slow to get to look at my car (it took till Monday afternoon). HOWEVER, Mark the service manager was the person who took a look at my car. He was VERY honest and upfront with what had happened. He explained everything he did to figure out what was wrong in a way that didnt make me feel like a dumb ass. He also talked to me about several options of going forward. He and the shop personnel were incredibly helpful in helping me figure out what to do next with my car. I ended up deciding to sell my jeep through personal sale for parts, and again, the sales personnel (rubin??? he was really really tall) were really helpful. I let them know I was meeting someone (from craigslist) at the shop to sell the car and asked them if they could watch out for me, and they did. They were super helpful in getting my final service paperwork done. With how shitty my Jeep died on me, I couldnt be happier with how the service manager Mark and service sales people helped me out. I cant thank them enough for watching out for me and being honest with advice.
