I have been to Aveda Institute in DC on three other occasions before my most recent visit. I had always gotten a lash tint, brow tint, and brow wax in one visit. In the past the Aveda student was thorough, had frequent visits/consultations from their educator, and did a great job (although it did take awhile - but in my head this what you got in exchange for such cheap prices). My most recent visit was absolutely awful. I requested the same appointment as always. The online reservation does not allow you to mark several services at once, but I put a rather detailed note indicating I would like all three of these services. I then called to confirm that it was clear what I wanted. The person on the phone said, "Yes, we have you done for a lash tint, brow tint, and brow wax at 6:00 PM." However, when I arrived ON TIME at 6:00 PM, I was told my appointment was for 5:45 PM and because I was late I would only have time for one service. I explained how I had called to clarify that I was getting all three and was 100% sure my confirmation email said 6. The employee at the front desk obviously felt bad, but when she "checked with her manager" she said they only had time for one. I was only getting these services for a beach trip I was leaving for the next day, so I was not able to come back for the other two services. This was on top of the fact that I had rescheduled dinner with a friend and traveled 45 minutes to the other side of town to be here. I try to get over this and go in for my brow tint. The students educator doesnt stay to help her in any way even though she makes it very clear (in front of me) that she has never done this before. She does the tint and when I open my eyes, there is BLACK DYE DOTS all over my face. Several below my eyes, at the inner corners, and on my eyelids. She scrubs and scrubs with toner, makeup remover, etc, but it is still there. I go to the bathroom to see the damage more clearly and am very upset. I find the educator who looked at the "final product" and say "Um, are you sure this is going to come off? Because it looks terrible." She assures me some vaseline will take it right off. Well, Im home and vaseline has done nothing. This is one of the worst service experiences I have ever had.

This place is the absolute worst! They claim to be a luxury "cosmetology school" yet they are anything and everything but that. I went on a tour of this school and no matter how much they tried to fluff the place up the interior and apparent look of misery on the faces of the students and rude teachers told otherwise. Definitely NOT worth the over $20,000 they want you to spend on the "luxe" education. Thankfully I have a friend who attended this school and warned me about how unprofessional and unmerited this institute actually is. They dont teach the students the info they need to be successful they only rush you onto the floor so that you can slave for them and keep up with the rent basically. After seeing the work of the "master students" its obvious that these poor souls lack the skill needed to keep up the demand and hype of this school. But I dont blame them! I blame whoever is in charge! Apparently, these idiots hire students fresh out of school to be teachers there (guess they were cheaper than actual seasoned professionals) and after touring the school the teachers and employees there looked just as miserable to be there as the students! Save your money and time and dont even consider this "luxury cosmetology school"....unless you want to waste money and time working for free with little to know knowledge of hair, skin, nails or makeup. I suggest you do as I did and go to one of the less "luxurious" and less pricey schools so that you can get the proper training and service you deserve. I ALMOST made the worst and most pricey educational decision of my life. *Currently a happy and well educated/ well rounded student at Bennett Career Institute*

I was referred to this institute many years ago and have since been a regular customer. That is until recently. My experience here has always been somewhat reasonable, and for the price its ideal. However, I chose to come in one day to get my roots touched up along with a trim with added textured layers and walked away with horrible results. I have natural golden brown hair and since have dyed it a bluish black. When I explained this to my advanced student stylist, she told me she knew exactly what to do. Turns out she had no idea whatsoever. "You can really see the bluish black in your roots now" said my stylist after washing out all the dye. "Awesome" I thought. That was the whole point of this visit. But after she began blowdrying my hair, I noticed my roots didnt look bluish black at all. They looked dark blonde! Either my stylist was colorblind, high or simply neglectful with the dye, Im not sure. Perhaps a mixture of all three. Then to makes matters worse, she completely screwed up my haircut. I asked for textured layers and what I received was a bunch of uneven strands of hair, which resulted in me having to chop off a bunch of my hair, after spending almost a year and a half of growing it out. I was offered a complimentary service after complaining but chose to go to a professional salon instead. I blame both the students and instructors. At the end of the day, this is a school and if there arent any instructors around how do you expect to teach your students? Honestly, just suck it up and pay the full amount at an actual salon and save your time and sanity.

I have been saving my cash by going to the Aveda Institute since last Fall for color, highlights and cut, sometimes all at once, sometimes just cut and color. It always comes out better than if I did it myself, but not always as good as a hairdresser that you went to on a regular basis. And the other thing is that it takes a L O N G time, so get either the early morning or 1st thing in afternoon appt. and bring something to drink or nibble on if you are missing lunch. I have started at 1 and finished at 5 pm. The students have a nearly year long training, starting with haircuts and ending with color and highlights. So by the time they hit color, they are pretty good, but their social interaction with customers is still a work in progress, i.e. leaving you at hair wash station until you are dizzy. But the instructors must approve everything (before and after they do anything) and you can not leave until they do. While I have received better (and worse) hair care for $200+, if you have the time, you can get the same for $50-60 (add a nice tip for the poor kids) and remember to rebook for a nice discount the next time. You are unlikely to get the same student twice, so make a note of what you like and do not for next time. Students get a commission if you buy product from the downstairs store after your service, so consider buying something. It is right in between the Gallery Place Metro stations, just north of Clydes. Some times it takes a week or two to get an appt., so plan ahead.
