In my late 20s and early 30s I was in great shape. Endless sets and countless reps at Globo Gym six days a week not to mention mind-numbing hour-long cardio sessions on the elliptical had me fit-and-trim. However, I was unhappy, and truly bored with the know-nothing personal trainers and repetitious cookie-cutter, one size fits all workouts Because of this boredom, somewhere along my mid 30s I lost my way, and threw exercise and any sense of healthy eating out the window. The pizza delivery guys knew me by name. Although my wife worked out religiously and cooked healthy meals, I opted to stay on the couch, eschew her food, and go for Taco Bell whenever possible. As I hit forty, things escalated (mainly the number on the scale and my waist size). Also, during this time, my father passed away unexpectedly from heart disease at 64 years of age. A visit to my doctor told me what I had been avoiding: I was very overweight, unhealthy, and a prime candidate for all those lovely things like hypertension, diabetes, stroke, and heart attack. It was not just the inside that was in trouble. Outside, I looked and felt like a sluggish flabulepicus mountain. (I trademarked “flabulepicus”.) I did NOT look good naked. One year ago, my wife showed me a Groupon for Commando Athletics. I looked through their website, liked what I saw, and decided to give it a go. My first Basic Commando class with Coach Jenny reinforced what I already knew: my brain was willing, but my body unable. To this day, I’m not sure how I got through that first class. I stuck with it, five times a week. I started feeling better and seeing changes within the first month. Five months later, I moved up to the Elite Commando level. I had seen these guys and gals working out. They seemed like gods to me. Those"gods" turned out to be friendly, silly, and supportive people who were welcoming and generous with their advice and encouragement. In this positive environment, and with the expert instruction from Coach Jenny, Coach Carlos, Coach Alexis, and Coach Alex, I have made great gains in the last few months. I am about 50 pounds down, and counting, from where I started.. My blood pressure is in the ridiculously good range. Best of all, I feel strong, more flexible, and almost invincible in body and spirit. Everything that made working out boring in my 30s is no longer an obstacle. The daily WODs are varied and challenging. Some days are harder than others, but with the knowledge, coaching, and support from the Commando Athletics family, I know that I can get through anything. As I begin my second year at Commando Athletics, I have rededicated myself to continue with the program and to making better food choices (I call this “eating like a human being”). I have set some goals this year, and I am sure that I will reach them. Most of all, I know I have found a place where I can continue to advance my fitness in the company of amazing coaches and wonderful teammates. #CommandoAthletics

Ive been a member of Commando Athletics, formerly known as Corporal Crossfit, since June of 2011. When i signed up i was a month away from undergoing Bariatric Surgery. I was at my heaviest, weighing in at 285 lbs of solid fat, with high blood pressure, cholesterol issues, and a bleak outlook on life, it was so bad that i would get winded just tying my shoes. Luckily, my wife had the foresight to know that this kind of workout regimen would appeal to my inner competitor and she went behind my back and signed me up for a phone consultation with Coach Carlos. (she signed up as me on their website and put in all my info). Luckily Coach C happened to call me when i was home with her and i put 2 and 2 together, otherwise i might not be here today writing this bad ass testimonial for you to enjoy :). So after a small back and forth where i assured Coach C that i didnt call him and my wife giggling in the background, i committed to a fitness assessment with Coach C. Upon hanging up from my phone call, my wife showed me their website and all the videos and pictures that they had up and i was stoked and scared at the same time. I did my fitness assessment and was hooked. Yes, i was unable to complete said assessment, with Coach C cutting my baseline workout by more than half and scaling me down and yes, i was bordering on dying on his floor (where had i gone into cardiac arrest, i wouldve been saved by their CPR skills because yes all the coaches have basic first aid including CPR Training) But, i absolutely loved it. I signed up that same day and have not looked back since, even cancelling all my bariatric surgery appointment a month later. Thanks to the second to none coaching and programming at C.A. i am the HEALTHIEST i have been in my entire life. This training center separates itself from the others due to its small classes and its sharp attention to detail, especially proper form. This allows your experience to be as safe and productive as you will find in South Florida. I have had plenty of friends and family who have gone to other crossfit gyms and have not experienced the level of attention that i receive at Commando Athletics and it does not limit itself to simply the WODs (workout of the day), it also includes nutritional advice, overall wellness and a sense of family. If you are looking for a "crossfit" gym, this is where its at when it comes to safety and positive results. I cant say enough good things about this gym and the coaches, and the people who workout here, it truly is a very close-knit group of people and everyone who has worked out here truly enjoys the experience. If you are shopping for a place to train in the Miami-Dade and even Southern broward area you are doing yourself a huge disservice if you dont come in for a visit and set up a fitness evaluation with Coach Carlos.

My whole life, my weight has gone up and down like a yoyo. But in the last ten years I gained a quite a bit of weight. I can’t remember the last time I weighed under 200lbs. between late night foods, not eating healthy at work and weekend BBQ’s exercising became less of a priority. I was in denial about how much weight I was gaining and I always told myself I would start working out and eating better. I was FAT! I could not believe I let myself get like that. It was horrible socially; I was the person people would make fun of. I was disappointed in myself because I had just let myself go. I remember looking at a picture of myself and almost not recognizing myself. I knew I had to do something at this point. I found Basic Commando at Commando Athletics on February 2014. I knew I had to do something drastic so I started working out daily at Basic Commando at Commando Athletics and I changed my eating habits even more after talking to my instructors about nutrition and after doing a lot of research online. That first session I was thinking, “What did I get myself into?!” When I started I was SO OUT OF SHAPE! I barely made it through the workouts. I couldn’t even do ONE PULL UP! Since then I have come a long way. As it stands right now, I am weighing in at 199 from 255lbs. That is total weight loss of 56 pounds . I am stronger and in better condition than I have been in over 10 years. Not only all that, which is FAB-u-lous, but I have started to change on the inside. The crazy thing is, over the past 7 months it has reduced quite a bit. I did not do it alone I had Basic Commando at Commando Athletics and I could have not done it without their staff they are truly amazing. My experience at Basic Commando at Commando Athletics has been and will continue to be life changing. I have made so many friends and the support from everyone is amazing. It doesn’t matter what level of fitness you are currently at because everyone supports each other. Basic Commando at Commando Athletics have created an environment that is inviting to everyone not to mention the knowledge and expertise they bring. I can’t thank Basic Commando at Commando Athletics enough for helping me become a better person both inside and out. To all the members of the Basic Commando at Commando Athletics … I thank you from the bottom of my heart. You have no idea how much of an impact each and every one of you have had on me over the past seven months. You have pushed and CONTINUE to push me every day to become the best I can be. Because of y’all I dig deeper than I thought possible.
