Let me start out by saying that Ive been a loyal Planet Fitness member for over 5 years. There was a brief period in 2010 when I cancelled my membership with no problems due to the birth of my second child, but there were no problems then. I am writing this review because of the Black Card program. In October of 2010, I started my membership back up and, this time, I joined as a Black Card member. I thought itd be nice to use different gyms if I was traveling to different areas of our city. No problems. In February of 2013, I decided I wasnt really using the Black Card membership benefits (I dont tan, and I wasnt using multiple gyms, so...). I went in to downgrade, they told me that I would be locked into a year contract. But, wait, why? Ive already been a member for almost two-and-a-half years, why on earth would I be locked into another contract? I thought Planet Fitness was all about no contracts because of the annual fee, which is supposedly charged to replace the whole contract situation? Hmmm..... Not really, thrilled, but ok. Then, instead of working right across from them, I got transferred to a work-from-home program... and the nearest PF was over 30 minutes away. I havent used the gym since at least May, but Ive had no reason to go out there to cancel. I finally go out there and am told that itd be cheaper to just pay through February because the $58 cancellation fee (which I was never told about, Ive been a constant member for now 3 years and have happily paid both the Black Card and regular annual fee) exceeds the $42.40 Id pay for my membership fees. Needless to say, I was flabberghasted. So, the cancellation fee is $58, even though I just paid the annual membership fee this month and I only have 4 months left on my contract? So, essentially, Id have to take a day off of work to drive over to your location in four months to save $15.60? Are you freaking kidding me? Look, if youre into a bare-bones gym with no frills, this gym is good. But their contracts are killers. They require 30 days, you must go into the place to cancel, the cancellation fee is $58 irregardless of whether you cancel 1 month into your membership (much smarter) or 11 months, and their attitude is, essentially, "suck it, buttercup." If you start with a Black Card membership, be VERY AWARE that they lock you into a 12 month membership if you choose to just downgrade... even if youve been a Black Card member for years. I asked today if I would have had to pay the fee if I had just cancelled my membership instead of downgrading it, and they told me no. Oh, thats great. Really fantastic way of rewarding loyalty to customers who want to stay with your gym. You know, I left the gym temporarily due to extenuating circumstances and I came back. After this afternoon, not only will I never go back, Ill make sure I tell everyone I come across with to avoid the place like they should be avoiding LA Fitness.

Dont go to this gym if you dont want to be judged. This was only my second time working out at this PF, and was singled out at this club for "super setting". I was doing my normal chest routine, nothing crazy and in my own corner of the gym out of everyones way, when a very rude associate came up to be and told me, 6-8 inches away from my face, "you need to put your weights back." Shocked, I simply asked "why?". She replied, "because youre super setting and we dont allow that." I again stated "Im a paying customer, no other PF in the area bothers me about this, and Im just doing my workout." She replied, "Well, if you cant follow our rules, I will have to cancel your membership." CANCEL MY MEMBERSHIP. At this point, I was completely shocked, pissed, and had to compose myself before I opened by mouth again. All I could do was scoff and put my weights back. It took me a good 10 seconds to decide what I was going to do, and the employee stared me down, 6-8 inches away from my face, and threatened to stand there until I put the weights back. After this, the rude employee, by the name of Bonnie, wouldnt quit staring at me from the front desk. I dont need a 50some year old woman chaperoning my workout and watching my every little move. After this, the manager came over and tried to smooth things over. Didnt work. Needless to say, the workout was ruined. I finished quickly and left the gym promptly writing a letter to corporate, only to get a reply from the Oviedo PF manager, Chrissy, defending all of her rude employees actions and making excuses. Aside from that interaction, all of the other staff Ive interacted with there are rude and dont care. The equipment is old and not taken care of. They dont have hydromassage. And the tanning beds are the same ancient beds I used to use there when I had a membership when I was 16. Dirty tanning bed rooms with crappy stand up fans to "cool you off". Horrible gym. Horrible staff. Horrible experience. Either join at a different gym chain, or go to the Lake Mary or Casselberry PFs. PF Oviedo is the most judgmental gym youll ever workout at.

People get sucked into the cheapness of PF, but they soon get kicked out for being lunks by asking why there are no DBs over 20lbs or for deadlifting, or sweating, or exhaling audibly. It caters to a certain niche, which is even below beginners, and it deliberately does things to keep the more advanced away. I imagine the hardcore market at your gym will soon be begging to come back once they get the lunk alarm pulled on them. They say its a "judgement free zone" but planet fitness is the most judgemental of all. Once someone gets to be too in shape they will find a way to kick you out and everyone looks at you with an evil eye and even a few skickering laughs if you are in better shape than them or even attempting to be. Its very sad what planet fitness has become vs. a few years ago where obese, skinny, bodybuilder, even fitness model could join together in harmony to get their goals aquired. Inside sources tell me that theyre taking away ALL freeweight equipment and going for all machine, which will do you no good. STAY FAR FAR AWAY!!! Join a real gym where you can see people who are in better shape than you and get motivated and worry about yourself not if someone is laughing at you for trying. LA FITNESS/GOLDS/WORLD etc.

The negative reviews dont make much sense and sound as if they may be from competing gyms. Look, this gym does nothing more than make weight machines, free weights and aerobic equipment available for you to work out on. Any staff-provided training is fairly basic and typically covers the proper usage of the machines. No racquetball, no swimming pools, no saunas, but who gives a hoot about those? Most folks just want a place nearby where they can improve their tone, their wind and gain some muscle in a clean environment. Most people want strictly weight machines and/or treadmills and ellipticals. No frills, no bells, no whistles (except the lunk alarm which I think is a cool feature). And THATS why it cane be an affordable $10 a month with a $35 annual fee (bringing it to about $13 a month on average). Been a member for one year and enjoy the self-service stylings. This place is rarely ever crowded in my experiences but that is a lot about going at the right times. If you go at 6pm when everyone is getting off work, whattya expect? Planet Fitness continues to be right where I wanna be.
