I went to Curltopia a week ago. My appointment was scheduled from 12:30-2pm. I arrived ten minutes early and left at 6pm. I had a previous engagement at 5:30 pm, which I had to push back. My stylist was Nova and she somehow was double booked. Due to the recent snow storm that week, they probably got mixed up. The receptionist thought I had already been at the salon before and had experience with Nova. I explained that I was a first time customer and wanted a Deva Cut. I already stated this over the phone when scheduling my appointment. After waiting 30 minutes, I spoke with Nova about my hair needs. My sole reason for coming to the salon was to get a hair cut that would shape my hair up so that I no longer have a blockish/triangle look going on, reduce bulk at the bottom and achieve a somewhat elongated look. I showed her pictures of my hair freshly washed so that she can see how much my hair shrinks. I also showed her various pictures of what I was hoping to achieve. I have thick, dense, voluminous, frizzy hair. I was hoping for less volume with enough body, frizz free curls and a nice, playful cut. Basically I wanted a tamer, frizz free, well shaped version of what I already have. Nova did a finger style and trimmed my dead ends. No Deva cut which was what I went there for. She said the Deva Cut would just add volume, which was what I was trying to avoid. I am glad she told me that but I felt that she still could have done more than just trim my ends. I wanted my hair to be shaped up. So I left the salon with well defined popping, bouncing, free moving, shiny curls but no real cut. Because I was under the dryer my curls were also a lot shorter, stiffer and flatter than I would have liked. I wasnt too worried about it though because by day 2 my curls softened and my body was back. The curls lasted for 6 days. When I washed my hair out again, I even found some split ends. Had she done a better job on the cut I would have given the salon 5 stars. The services cost $105, which included trim, finger style and hydration treatment. I gave her a pretty decent tip because I do believe she did her very best but that cutting wasnt her strong suit. She even asked a master stylist for pointers with cutting my hair. If the receptionist would have listened to my hair needs better than maybe she could have booked me with someone who was more confident with cutting hair. Plus, she was unfairly double booked. I must say that Nova is a master at creating curls. My curls were popping. It was wild (in a good way)! Overall, Nova was very professional, super friendly and a blast to chat with. She seemed like a super fun person who really loves what she does. I probably will go back to her for the hydration treatment. I am still in search of a good curly cut though, especially since a good friend told me my hair didnt look that different. I was wanting a cut that was more noticeable/stunning. I didnt really get a cut at all just a trim. Fantastic job on the curls though. Everyone wanted to play with them!

It took a while after my experience to actually write a review, but here I am. I decided I wouldnt feel better until I got this off my chest. I had my very 1st appointment there in December. I live on the other side of town and unfortunately there was an accident on 285 that caused me to be a little late for my appointment, maybe 7 minutes. My appointment was on the same weekend they were having the BOGO, so there were quite a few ladies lined up to purchase products. After signing in and waiting for about 20 minutes, I was informed that due to my lateness that she had already taken the next customer and I would have to wait. I had no problem with that, thats the story of a black queens life in relation to hair appointments right? After about 45 minutes I was led to the shampoo bowl and my journey began. My stylist was Ashley, she seemed very knowledgeable about hair and I decided on a flat twist. After coming from under the dryer from my conditioner I waited another maybe 30 minutes for her to style my hair to go back under for (as they stated) no less than 1 1/2 hrs. The interesting thing about that is I was told as she was styling my hair that they get no more than the same amount of time per client (not including dryer time) to do the consultation, shampoo, style, or trim, etc. Now my problem came with being asked twice did I want to leave with the flat twist in my hair and take them out myself? I was also asked was there anywhere I needed to go because I could allow them to air dry that way and return, so she could take them out then. I found that odd, I mean I know I was late, but I also stood in line for waiting for ladies to make purchases, that also added another maybe 8 minutes to my tardiness, did I not deserve the whole salon treatment? All services are a la carte, but upon reflection I paid $115 (no steam treatment and before tip) her flat twist were listed @ $65 shampoo and deep conditioner included, now I did receive a trim, but did that trim cost me $50? I spent a total of 5 hours in the salon that day. Upon leaving I was given a hair prescription and none of the things listed there were what she used on my hair that day. The shampoo and conditioner used at the bowl came in a gallon jug with no recognizable label. She used Design Essentials and Moroccan oil for the other parts. The overall ambiance of the salon was upbeat and cheery. I dont think Ill ever return. I would rate them @ a fair!

Curltopia is a multi-ethnic curly hair boutique salon that specializes in all textures under the sun. Whether you have wavy, curly, coily, kinky, transitioning, relaxed, or unrelaxed hair, they have a stylist perfect for you. Any service you can imagine is offered at Curltopia. A cut, Deva-cut, color, highlights, roller set, blowout, wash & go, two strand twist, flat-twists, roller-sets, lock maintenance, relaxers, and thermal straightening are just a sample of the services provided by Curltopia stylists. Every service comes with a shampoo, complimentary deep conditioning treatment, consultation, a prescription of hand-selected products specifically for your hair, and instructions on how to maintain your hair at home. I particularly love the service provided at Curltopia. Ashli was my stylist for the day and she was very informative. During the service she made sure I was informed, comfortable, and asked questions about my hair and hair care routine. Ashli also explained what products she was using, why she was using them, and gave me a list of products and tips to maintain my hair on my own at home. Ashli was truly fabulous. It was nice to have a stylist who concentrated on me and my hair only, none of the rush and fuss I’ve normally encountered in the past at other salons. While I was sitting under the steamer, which is awesome and I need to purchase one by the way, I noticed every client got in and out. Also, there was no signs of double booking or over booking. I was impressed! Curltopia is definitely about customer service. Many popular “natural” hair product lines are available at the salon. Miss Jessie’s and the Moroccan Oil line are just a few of the products they use and carry, and even if you aren’t getting serviced you can purchase the above products in the salon. Culrtopia’s decor is extremely fabulous. The first time I stepped foot in the salon I was taken with the chandeliers and damask decor. If I could figure out how to steal their chairs, without going to jail, I would. In addition there is every magazine you could want in the salon. I caught up on Ebony, Cosmo, and Vogue during my service. I received a wash, much needed and overdue cut, steam hydration treatment, and rod set the day of my Curltopia visit. Ashli whipped my curls into shape, and after sitting under the steamer I could tell the difference in my hair. I think for once my hair actually loved me.
