This review is a little late but well overdue, especially after reading some of the other reviews. I visited the Mahogany Salon twice. My first visit was last summer around April. My appointment was for a trim with Patrice. Prior to arriving I had washed and blow dried my natural hair. I just wanted to get in and out. (Ive had my fair share of natural hair horror stories at previous salons). Patrice arrived a little late but I remained cool about it. She confirmed what I was getting done and I told her what I had already did to my hair prior to arriving. She asked if she could wet my hair and re-blow dry it. I was very hesitant at first since I dont use a lot of heat on my hair. I went ahead and let her do what she needed to do (now that I look back I realize that was unnecessary). Patrice was very ruff with my hair when she was blow drying it and she didnt even bother to detangle my hair prior to doing so. When dealing with natural afro-textured hair you have to be gentle and you have to work in sections when you are blow drying or detangling the hair. The trim she gave me was ok. I should have stopped there but I wanted to wear my hair in a protective style for the summer. Patrice informed me that she knew how to do a variety of different braid extension styles. She suggested that I try crochet braids, which I had never gotten done before. So I made my next appointment with her for the following month. The next appointment with Patrice I let her do the whole shampoo, condition, and steam treatment before braiding my hair. Why oh why did I do that?!?! She was very stingy with the products (Specifically the shampoo and conditioner). She only shampooed my hair once and put very little conditioner on my hair. My hair wasnt dirty but it needed a nice thorough wash with the protective style I was getting. She blew my hair out again with little to no heat protectant. She was very ruff with cornrowing my hair and the entire crocheting process. After almost 2 months of wearing the crochet braids I removed them and noticed that I had some breakage in my crown area. Overall I take good care of my hair. I do the minimum when it comes to styles, which is braiding it in plaits or twists. From time to time my mother will put it in two French braids for me. The only time I look for a hair stylist is when I need a trim and I havent been successful at finding a good stylist since Ive been natural. I just dont like too many hands in my head, especially if someone doesnt know what they are doing. Im overdue for a trim and Im in search for a good stylist. Eventually I would like to do different things with my natural hair but the health of it comes first. If I could just find a stylist who is knowledgeable about the health and care of African American natural hair as well as having the creative skills. Im at the point to where I might go out of town to find a good stylist.

I recently got my hair done here. I had gotten my hair done previously in the past and had an excellent experience when the old management was there. To get to the point a stylist named Patrice did my hair. I asked for a blow out and trim. I explained to her that i had a big chop 6 months ago because of heat damage and to handle my hair with care. When I got to the shop she was doing someone elses hair first of all, secondly she washed conditioned and placed me under the steamer and forgot about me! She said 20 minutes and it turned into 1 hour...I was pissed...I had to come up to the front so she could finish my hair. When I came up to the front she did a rushed half a@@ed job on my hair. She blew dry my hair with out barely putting any protective cream or moisture on my hair. She she preceded to blow dry and trim my hair rushing through it because she was doing someone elses hair. The other woman looked pissed the whole time she was doing my hair because in my opinion she probably thought she wasnt expecting anyone else during her appointment time and neither did I! Bottom line I got a rushed, poor and terrible experience.... the trim was raggedy.........I still ended up with HEAT DAMAGE!! I blame myself partially for this experience however when you get your hair done you expect a trained stylist that listens to your concerns and tailors your experience based on such....Do not let I repeat do not let Patrice handle your natural hair. Maybe for other styles but not your natural hair...

This is a good salon. The staff is nice and they really know how to work with natural hair. I would recommend coming here for a style. With that being said beware. They are very scissor happy at mahogany. I went to mahogany for a trim. The stylist told me she would cut an inch off, I was fine with that. Then while she was doing my silk press she proceeded to cut my hair back into the awkward phase of being natural. AND she gave me layers I did not ask for. I expressed my grievance with a grunt once I realized she had picked the scissors back up without my knowledge. Only the lord knows how much hair she would have continued to cut. It was all very unnecessary. The inch was sufficient yet I walked away having lost almost 3. Im not one that is particularly attached to the length of my hair but I couldnt help but shed some tears for the good length lost that day. If you dare get your hair cut or "trimmed" here, make sure youre looking in the mirror. Youve been warned.

My fiancee made an appointment with this salon a week in advanced. When she went to the salon at her appointed time there was no one at the salon and the doors was locked. Come to find out the stylist changed her appointment without any type of notice. My fiancee called the salon the next day and the owner told her that they are not obligated to honor the appointment time and hold the right to change the appointment whenever they wanted. If this is the way they treat new paying customers I hate to find out how they treat current customers. Stay away from this salon as they are unprofessional and dont care about customers.

Love Love Love this salon! Love the holistic atmosphere and the ladies that work here are so nice and very professional. I have not been disappointed once and Im very grateful for having found this salon. My hair has went from dry and damaged to thicker and healthier. Melanie is absolutely the best with the protective crochet styles that have helped my hair growth. I brought my best friend along for a wash and set for her birthday, and since then she has become a repeat costumer! This salon is awesome, the stylist are awesome. I believe Ive found my home.

The staff at the mahogany salon is amazing at what they do. My experience coming here has always been great , everyone is friendly and the atmosphere is always peaceful. I get my hair done by Ashley Carter (the owner) and she has never failed with giving me the style I was looking for and sometimes making it even better then I imagined. Ive seen the other hair stylist work their gift & everyone walks out looking amazing. I definitely recommend the mahogany salon to any and everybody thats looking for a forever hair home. You wont be disappointed!!!!
