SALON ONLY. Read if you have long/thick hair. I visited the Salon at Ulta in downtown Silver Spring, MD today. I made a 4PM appointment for a signature haircut. The lady who made my appointment on the phone told me the haircut starts at $35 but they do not have that level of hair stylist so all of theirs are $45 and up depending on the stylists years of experience. She did not ask me if I have long hair or thick hair. As a contrast, when I called Hair Cuttery, they asked me up front if I had long/thick hair and then told me it cost extra. They were up front about it on the phone. When I come in, the girl I am booked with tells me she is running "twenty minutes behind". I wait for 50 minutes (yes, FIFTY) with no update and I only stayed because I wanted my hair cut that badly! Of course, it was only to be told the real cost to cut my hair is $75. Yes, if you have long hair, it goes up incrementally by $10 per tier of length plus a thickness charge. She further mentioned that she couldnt tell me that on the phone because she couldnt see my hair. I responded that she could have told me there is a charge for long/thick hair and I would have told them yes I do have that kind of hair. At least, then I would have been in the know! As well, someone could have gone over pricing when I arrived instead of making me wait 50 minutes and then going over pricing. Let me contrast to Michael Anthony Salon (Eastern Market). They dont charge me extra. I pay $50 regardless just like it used to be in the old days. And they are a much higher end salon than Ulta. The only reason I didnt go to my lady there is its far away and I no longer work downtown. But alas, I will make the trek down there! The only reason I even gave a 1 star is because the girl was kind enough to tell me BEFORE she cut my hair.

If I could give this location no stars, I would. From the associates to the salon, this place is absolutely terrible. This latest incident is the worst and I had to share with the world the reason I will no longer be shopping at Ulta. I made a last minute appt online for 1145 for this location. I arrived 5 minutes early and there were 3 ladies standing around the salon talking as I walked up. I said hello but they continued to talk to each other and eventually one turns around and asks what time my appt was for. I tell her my appt time and name. She tells another lady standing there that I was her client. The stylist rolls her eyes and says "follow me". I sit in her chair and she asks what style I want. I said the go out blowout and she walks back over to the check in desk and pulls out some pamphlet and starts reading it over there. After 5 or so minutes. She comes back and says okay so its going to be $47. I asked why I was being charged extra and she said because I have long hair. Now, 2 things here. My hair barely goes beyond my shoulders and this is the 4th Ulta salon Ive been to. Never had this happen before. So I laughed and I said youre joking, right. She drily responds that shes not and then says its actually more money because my hair is natural. Oh and that didnt include using a flat iron which is another $10 fee. Despite their website clearly saying the go out blowout is a blowout and use of a styling tool, they still charge extra. My total would have been $67 for a blowout. A BLOWOUT. I called their guest services to ask if this was common practice and they advised that the store manager would be calling me but they never did. So I will never shop Ulta again.

*DO NOT EVER GO HERE* I have to have a really terrible experience to take the time to review a place, and its just to save someone else the trouble. Ive been to this Ulta at least three times or more because its less than ten minutes from my house, but I have made a promise to myself that I will drive further because I dont want to give this location my business. It has gotten bad reviews over the course of a couple of years, so it seems clear there is no oversight from a regional manager, or their earnings stay within goal because theyre in a great location. Theres one or two employees with good customer service skills, but the majority are rude, condescending, and unhelpful. A guy named Brian who I think is one of the managers is the worst, and is probably why the other employees act the way they do. Theres only ever one cashier open, the line is always long, you cant find anyone in the aisles to help you locate a product, and when you go out of your way to chase them down to ask them a question they talk to you like youre stupid or make jokes at your expense. I always treat people how I want to be treated, but at the end of the day I am a paying customer who usually spends $75-$100 on each visit and theres absolutely no reason for his/their attitude. Dont know how in the world they keep their jobs.

I got my hair done a year ago here while I was visiting family in DC. I got an ombre that completely ruined my hair, the stylist also charged for stuff that she put in my hair like toner and conditioning that she did not tell me she was doing. I spent close to $1000 trying to fix along with the cost of what they charged me. I left crying, I informed them that I wanted to get part of my money back and they told me they would send me my money since I was from a different state and they couldnt have me come in and fix it. Well, it has been over a year and I still havent received anything. I called and complained to the better business bureau, and they informed me that they tried to contact them multiple times and they had no response. Ashley did my hair, the cut was great but my hair is still recovering.

I booked a hair appointment online for 10am, showed up on time. Front door was open late and then once inside I had to stand around the vacant salon area until I was able to flag an associate down to let them know I had an appointment. Turns out the person who called me in the morning gave me the wrong info, my stylist wouldnt be there until 12...bummer I really needed a cut and this was my first time trying Ulta b/c it seemed lije a convient option. What a waste of time and money (had to pay for parking).

(MAKEUP ONLY) Ulta beauty has a great variety of makeup, from drugstore to high end. You are allowed to test products, and the ladies there are super sweet and kind. News flash to all of the bad reviews: if you approach someone w/ a bad attitude chances are that they will give you one back. I think that ulta is a great place to shop for makeup, but the only reason I am taking of one star is because there is only one register open at all times.
