This club was previously owned by Bally and well run. We had been a member under Bally management for four years. LA Fitness took it over two years ago in 2011. My wife and I have grudgingly continued our membership - - we have been using this gym for 6 years. Since 2011 under LA Fitness: it has been poorly staffed and exceptionally unclean and filthy in the facilities and bathrooms. The Bally staff were motivated, happy, professionals. By and large the folks LA Fitness hired/hires do not seem to care much for their jobs, their members, or the facility itself. The toilets in the bathroom are absolutely filthy and smell. The lockers have not been cleaned or made tidy it would seem in years. My wife uses the pool and finds that there is no supervision of its use - - you have morning-noon-night numerous large elderly folks just walking in the pool without regard to swim-lanes and so swimmers cannot use lanes for laps. We requested a pace-clock - - hell - - any clock on the way so swimmers can mark time. Three requests and most times the staffer did not even know what a pace clock was at all. Its not hard to tell when you go into a restaurant-hotel or in this case a gym that none of the staff really care to be there or are happy and motivated. I dont know if it is poor management or poor hiring or both - - but LA Fitness has done a horrible job of staffing this Wheaton facility. One morning my wife went to swim early in the morning and the staffer charged with opening the gym had lost her key and so you had 20+ people hanging out in the ice cold winter by the front door hoping for a solution. More recently there were four pieces of weight-lifting equipment down and OUT OF ORDER for more than two weeks plus. Three of these are still not repaired as of today after more than 3-weeks down. In the weight-lifting area upstairs - - people are allowed to come in to workout in street clothes and street shoes. This week I saw an older guy working out in Hush-Puppy shoes and a golf sweater... Under Bally management there was a standard maintained and discipline and good order. By the treadmills there are typically 2-3 of them broken for more than a week at a time. Now it is like a bus station in our gym. Because Im in the military and need to stay fit away from the base we continue to use this facility - - but I cannot recommend it to anyone who can look farther afield at the many other clean and well managed gyms in Silver Spring.

The management really sucks. They fired all of the Ballys Maintenence guys who were probably making more than minimum wage and as a result something is always broken, and if it requires a plumber or someone who knows what they are doing, they will let things like the steam room sit useless for months. The steam room especially is irksome because they dont seem to understand that they are running it too hot. So of course a gasket breaks and the janitor is unable to seal a leak or fix anything and the manager is scared to call for permission to call a plumber.***they did fix the steam room after 3-4 months of being broken down.not the first time they let it go that long..how hard is it to boil water and make steam? the room is there all you need is heat and water to make it work.. The machinery is always broken and the "personal trainers" dont ever hang out. If they were around and they saw what some of these retards were doing they might be able to give a little instruction and save a lot of damage and annoyance to patrons. The "personal trainers" dont ever seem interested in getting clients, it is weird, are they really prostitutes for fat old ladys or do they get paid $7/hr and dont give a good goddang? This gym is maddening because it could be so nice but it is run by tight wads.

I have always thought the purpose of franchises and chains was to ensure a consistent level of quality and uniformity from one site to another. This particularly LA Fitness defies convention and is somehow one of the worst Ive ever visited in and outside the DC area. A former Ballys, LA Fitness took it over but did not make badly needed investments into machines, staff, or general building maintenance. Circuit and weight machines need replacing, spin bikes are incredibly abused and rusty. The cardio machines will sometimes stay broken for incredibly long periods, which is only mitigated by an over abundance of them on the cardio floor. However, because the windows face east, it gets incredibly hot and the AC hardly is ever running. Free weights will be strewn all over. The pool is dated and lifeguards are indifferent (and often asleep). The company has put some effort into making it better. Recent renovations brought a new steam room and new free weights, but there still is a lot of work to be done. One thing going for it is that membership is really affordable. Only $30 a month. $40 gets you access to any LA Fitness in the area (including the MUCH better Downtown Silver Spring location and Signature Rockville location).

Downscale club in an increasingly upscale neighborhood. 200+ brand new expensive apartments have been and are being built all around this club, which is an old Ballys in dire need of complete refurbishing. The swimming pool is suggestive of an old high school pool. The walls of the pool area are a taupe color which always looks dirty. The ladies locker room is dingy, as is the whole club. The lockers are old metal lockers that have been banged up. The little offices all around the main floor have plain off-white walls, little desks and glaring lighting. They are always empty except when the staff is goofing off and ignoring members, which is most of the time. If there is any management, I have never seen any sign of it. The chains brains need to wake up to the fact that this location is a neglected gold mine and make an investment in significantly upgrading the facility.

The location is convenient, but the facility and management isnt great. The free weight area is probably the worse part. There were 3 flat benches when I joined a couple months ago, then they took one away with no explanation. To add to that, there werent enough standard 45 pound bars to go to the various set ups that require them (i.e. squat rack, flat bench, incline bench and decline bench) so youd have to wait for a bar to free up to use one of the aforementioned equipment, even if no one was using that equipment at the time. Oh, and there are only two squat racks. The real reason Im taking time to write this review is that the leg extension machine has been broken and "scheduled for service" for about two months. Seems pretty unreasonable.

Weights are left everywhere because the people who workout here have no gym etiquette, limited workout equipment, its dirty, the kids club is dirty, the equipment is old, theres no space in the free weight area, 2 squat racks, stretching area is cramped and usually crowded. Kids club is in poor condition, theyll take the socks and shoes off the kids and my son will have black feet when I pick him up. I do however like the sitter in the morning , Catherine is great with the kids. A good majority of the lockers in the locker room are bent making it so they either dont close or cant put a lock on. Bathroom stalls are dirty and one of the doors dont stay shut. This location needs a serious upgrade.
