This was my first time cutting my hair in Ann Arbor but it had gotten too long and I was looking for medium length hair (shoulder length). I walk-in to the salon (BIG MISTAKE, later learned that you NEVER want to do that), and I was seen pretty fast (10-15 m waiting). The girl washed my hair and massaged it and then the instructor came to ask me how I wanted my haircut. I was pretty specific and he knew exactly what I wanted. The girl, however, pretended she understood. I say pretended because when she proceeded to cut my hair it didnt even reach my neck!!!!!! I couldnt believe she had cut my hair so short I could barely put it in a ponytail. As I started to freak out, she said she could still give me the haircut that I wanted. When she started cutting it I noticed she back of my head kept getting shorter and shorter length. When I pointed out that she didnt know what she was doing, thats not what I wanted, that I wanted the haircut that the instructor had shown her how to do it, but she wouldnt listen to me. When I noticed that she had completely given me a horrible haircut and short hair, and by the time I was crying this older lady came to see what she could do, but she said nothing could be done because the hair was so short. Its the worst hair salon experience Ive ever had in my life. Its been 3 months and its barely gotten shoulder length and it looks so bad I can never wear my hair down, ever. Worst part is that she said the hair would grow to the haircut that i wanted and I believed her then. That was bs.

Run, far, far away. All I wanted was someone to polish my nails because I do such a crappy job myself. My friend said I could go there for $15 and get a free bottle of nail polish so I figured how bad could a student be. Front desk guy was borderline rude in a I think Im hotter than I really am kind of way. They had product all over the place, which gave me something to do while I had to wait for appointment. A girl came out, a senior student, to do my polish. The back room was really nice. Good atmosphere, music, lighting. I thought it was weird she got up from the station 3 different times...werent they getting it ready while I had to wait? She talked way to much and it took her 1 HOUR! to just paint my freakin nails and she had to redo 3 times. The finished product was HORRENDOUS! Even after a "higher up" came and approved them, which I could not believe since the higher up had to go get a pair of tweezers to snag out some cotton out from under the top coat. How ghetto. They were streaky, had fuzz in the color, and the color didnt cover alot of the sides. Will never ever go back and will def discourage people from going if I hear it in conversation. You can get a much better, faster, inexpensive experience at other salons in the area.

I have been to this location twice, and here is what you need to know. This is a SCHOOL. The students are certainly capable, some rather good, at performing most services. However, many still lack in the people skills department. I say this because even though I have been very satisfied with my hair both times (and lets face it - thats what matters most), I have been frustrated while sitting in the chair. Much depends on the student you get, which I will admit is a bit of a crap shoot if you dont know of anyone to ask for specifically. Also, It is irritating to have salon appointments run 20 - 30 percent longer than they would at a full-fledged salon. Then again, I would rather that the student working on my hair take the time to NOT screw up than rush and botch my head. The exchange is this: for a full color, cut, blow dry and style on long hair I paid (wait for it....) 67 bucks. Ive once paid 185 for the exact same services at other salons. DJI also runs some great sales and incentives such as buy-one-get-one services or $20 color coupons. Added bonus- tipping is not allowed at the institute. So, if hair maintenance is too much for your budget, you should definitely consider DJI Ann Arbor.

I never write bad reviews because I feel bad for the business or students but this place was actually horrible! I do not recommend anyone go. I would rather pay a lot more for someone that has more common sense. I went for a blowout and some beachy waves and the girl that was assigned to me had been there since august and she didnt know some of the most basic things. For example, after doing my blowout she couldve just used a thick curling iron to create the waves and she had to go ask her teacher. I couldve told her that. She took over an hour just blow drying my hair that usually takes maybe 20 or 30 minutes. When I told the instructor that she just took too long and didnt even know the basics, she made excuses like well thats just not her specialty and shes only been here since August. She was actually really rude and walked away. Her name was Hailey! She was super fake and only cared about what I had to say before I started giving them feedback. They didnt even give me a survey because they didnt even want to hear anything i had to say. Im sorry Ive been to other Aveda Institutes and they have all been great! Except for this one in Ann Arbor.

To whom this may concern... As many of you may not know Douglas J Aveda is a sweat shop. Students work hard for free, we hardly get breaks to have a bite to eat or a sip of a drink, let alone take a breather between guests. I feel bad for the students that are going to be there for Christmas. Which is the reason Im leaving this review. I need everyone to know that comes in to get their hair/nails/facials/massages that we are no longer getting a Christmas break. They already shortened Thanksgiving break last year and that was bad enough. Its a school, so students should get some sort of break. The students make that school enough already with out accepting tips and putting in 1500 without any days off (you are only allowed 3 a period. If you go over those days its an automatic withdraw) even if youre sick, a doctors note doesnt even cover your ass. So is anyone else agreeing that Douglas J is a sweat shop? I hope this has changed a lot of peoples minds about spending your money on overly exhausted haircuts and colors. Youre paying out of your ass for free labor services. Think about how you spend your money.

I have been going to the Douglas J Aveda Institute in Ann Arbor for more than 5 years. They do a great job. Some students are more confident and experienced than others, but that is to be expected. Ive never had a bad experience and Ive received a lot of great service for the cost. In other words, a great value. My hair color is also complicated to get right. Ive never had a problem with the coloring or had any negative experiences with hair styling/cuts either. In comparison, I used to spend a fortune on my hair and received little value for it, with inconsistent color, rude stylists and wait-times that were ridiculous. It was easier to get into a doctors office than it used to be to get my hair done - no longer! I highly recommend Douglas J Aveda Institute in Ann Arbor. It may take longer to have your hair done, but its worth it. The institute is clean, the staff is courteous, kind and professional. Others must feel the same way as the place is typically full of customers. The only drawback is parking in downtown Ann Arbor but clearly that is not something the Institute can control.
