I took a vacation time from work for a service call for 3 plumbing problems and was left with a written estimate for replacement and repairs, plus an expired coupon! The technician was not prepared to make any of the repairs and did not even check out my hot water heater to see what the problem was. I bought my furnace, AC, & hot water heater from AJ Perri. I knew the price was high, but thought that I was paying for quality. Ive paid them to do periodic inspection/maintenance (never actually needed maintenance) on these devices. My hot water heater started running out of hot water too quickly. Hoping that it was just sediment, I went to flush the tank and found that the hose spigot was so close to the floor that I could not attach either of my hoses. This led me to call AJ Perri to checkout the heater, hopefully to reposition the spigot along the way, and then to also look at a problem toilet and leaky outdoor frostproof (expensive) spigot. Perri brags (message when one is on hold) that their technicians trucks have the equipment needed to do the repair immediately, so I made sure that I clearly identified the items needing service. The technician asked how old the heater was and immediately proposed a replacement. I asked about checking the heating elements and he said he could not do that without draining the tank. When pressed, he said he does not want to drain the tank because the sediment could clog the spigot. He then described the new water heater options. I pressed and he gave me the cost of replacing the heating elements ($995 - a new water heater installed by Home Depot was only $1200!; the new Perri heaters were 2x to 3x the Home Depot cost, depending on warranty). He looked at the frostproof spigot, tried tightening the screw that holds the handle on, and then told me it needed replacement for $600 (it had only cost me $240 to have it installed less than 3 years ago). He also gave me an estimate to replace the toilet fill unit after looking at it (not touching it). I took vacation time to find out that he would fix nothing and that repairs required another visit (see Perri claim that their trucks are equipped to fix your problem "now"). He left me a written estimate (of outrageous prices - even after he applied coupons that I had) plus he gave me an expired coupon "for next time." I looked online and checked the heater thermostat (remember he checked nothing on the heater) and determined it was working. Then I checked the elements and found that the bottom one was bad. I bought an $18 element (there was a cheaper one for $12), a $5 wrench, a $5 adapter to angle the drain spigot, and replaced my bottom element. The water heater is working fine.

AJ Perri installed a Rinnai tankless hot water heater after the sales department convinced me about how much better it would be than a traditional hot water heater and how the benefits would offset the great disparity in cost. After a few years (while still under warranty) the Rinnai unit began to emit a loud rumbling noise, started beeping, showed an error code, and stopped producing hot water. Multiple service calls have been made regarding this issue, each time resulting in having to miss work while I wait for a technician. After about six times of having no hot water (including for a whole week in the winter), waiting for service calls, having parts replaced, etc. I was assured by the technical advisor that the problem was resolved. After the second to last assurance I was promised that if I had one more issue that the unit would be replaced. This promise was unfulfilled when the unit again stopped working. The technical advisor worked on the unit and I was told that the problem was clearly resolved and that the unit would be fine. I asked for my warranty to be extended because I was not confident that there would be no further problems. AJ Perri extended my warranty and promised that if I had the same issue again that the unit would be replaced.Yesterday the unit again had the same issue and I had no hot water. I spoke with the technical advisor this morning and reminded him of the agreement to replace the unit and he informed me that he would have to have a technician look at the unit before he could do anything. I arranged for the technician to come out, again having to miss a day of work, and during scheduling asked to speak with someone above the technical advisor. I was told that I should speak again with the technical advisor, to which I replied that I would prefer to speak with someone above him as he has not been able to resolve my issue (even with multiple visits to my home). I was told no one was available but someone would call me back. I am waiting for a response from AJ Perri. There customer service is deplorable. It is very difficult to speak with anyone in any sort of authority. I have had my air conditioning, heat, and hot water all replaced with this company before I realized how little they care about their customers.

About once a year we receive a "Service Notification" from this A.J. Perri "Service Department" (1138 Pin Brook Rd., Tinton Falls, NJ 07724) urging us to call within 30 days. It comes on a postcard printed on pale yellow cardstock. It LOOKS like a reminder for the homeowner to tend to his/her AC maintenance plan and reads like something one is actually REQUIRED to do - like something one might receive from the township. In fact, it looks exactly like our township utility tax bill and has printed on it the amount of $89.00 as if it is something we need to pay... Please warn your elderly family and friends and any other guileless individuals who might be taken in by the appearance of this postcard - that it is, in fact A.J. Perris SALES PITCH and nothing more - not something that needs to be responded to at all - something that may be ripped up and put in the recycling bin with other advertisements. Do mention it to your loved ones who might be vulnerable though - I was nearly taken in the first time we received this postcard...but a phone call to the company raised enough red flags that I realized it was not what it LOOKED like... It reads "Dear Homeowner: Maintenance on your air conditioner is required: according to all major air conditioner manufacturers, warrantes do not cover damage from a failure to properly maintain the unit as set forth in the Use and Care Manual (see Proper Maintenance section or your warranty). In most cases, failure to properly maintain your air conditioner will make your manufacturers warranty null and void. Our service will bring your air conditioner back to original manufacturers specifications. There is no trip charge (service call fee) or overtime fee related to this service. Your charge for this service is only $89.00. Please contact our office Monday-Friday 8am-11pm for details and to schedule a maintenance visit. Then it gives a phone number. I am tempted to post the Better Business Bureaus phone number here - but if you are savvy enough to look for a review on this company, you know how to contact the Better Business Bureau.

We called AJ Perri when our 16 year old AC system stopped cooling. I accompanied their tech to the laundry room where our system was located. Water had accumulated on the floor and on opening the cover discovered partially frozen coils (inadequate coolant) and coils clogged with mold. Worried about mold spores circulating through the ducts -and since the house is built on a slab - not easily observed - we shut the unit down and had their sales-guy come in for an immediate estimate. We asked that the heating system replacement be included. About 20 minutes surveying the home including a peek in the attic, followed by 2 hours of friendly discussion while flipping thru laminated pricing sheets and working up a price.. We did get a written estimate.. over $12K! It was the hottest day of the summer. I signed a contract on the spot - though uneasy about the price. . Later, I looked up A.J.Perri on YELP and, after reading reviews of similar sales pattern and high prices I cancelled the contract. Then I set about getting 2 competitors quotes and watched as my neighbor got my installation slot and we sweltered. Competitors did surveys and also quoted Carrier equipment with only slight differences in model numbers.. When I got the estimates - SURPRISE - they were slightly higher than A.J. Perris! After researching Carrier on-line and comparing estimates, I went with Meyer & Depew . They had quoted the quieter compressor and key, included a separate pipe thru the attic to the compressor. (The new refrigerant operates at 6 x the pressure of my old Freon unit and the old piping was buried in the slab since the house was built in the 60s). On reflection A.J. Perris offer was fair and we suffered thru several days of temps in the 90s. The neighbor, who replaced his unit in my original installation slot, is pleased with what would have been my hardware and with AJPs installation.
