Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is something I was always interested in but never had the nerve to try. I researched dozens of schools and interviewed many instructors but never quite found a fit. The day I walked into NJ United, I met instructor Jay Hayes and immediately felt very comfortable. He was welcoming and down to earth, explained the kind of atmosphere he likes to keep (friendly and non threatening) and then offered me 30 days to try it out. Most gyms will not even give you 1 free class but NJU offered 30. This speaks volumes of not only confidence, but how important it is to make sure you are comfortable. I was very worried and nervous at first but as soon as the class started I felt very at ease. Every single member was very friendly and helpful. Needless to say, I lost 35 lbs the first couple of months, gained a tremendous amount of confidence, and met some of the greatest people. Now, over a year later, I cant imagine my life without BJJ or NJ United. Instructor Jay Hayes is one of the best teachers Ive ever come across. Not just with martial arts, but in general. His ability to convey difficult techniques with masterful precision is inspiring. Another thing Ive noticed is the versatility of NJ United. They have a wonderful childrens program, kickboxing, MMA, and even yoga. There are many classes that have an array of functions. NJ United has everyone from BJJ World Champions, amateur competitors, or people looking to learn self defense or exercise. Since training here, Ive become calmer, more confident, more focused, less hostile, stronger, more humble, and more motivated. It is ironic that my greatest fear in beginning to train in BJJ is that I would just be thrown to the wolves but instead was taught to become one. Through exquisite teaching and friendly training partners, I have overcome so much fear and doubt within myself that words truly do not do it justice. I have NJ United and Jay Hayes to thank for that.

To search and join any mixed martial arts gym can be daunting to anyone. I know it was for me and I assume it is for many others. Luckily, a close friend of mine had been training in NJ United and strongly recommended I join as well. Sure enough, my first class had surely not been my last. It has been more than two years and I simply love to learn and train under this academy. There are many elements that make NJ United a great environment to learn martial arts. Here are some to name a few. • Jay Hayes, head owner and black belt instructor, is skillful, experienced, and most importantly an astute professor in the art of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. He has competed and trained with the best of the best. He also has a gift of breaking down the most basic techniques, in our BJJ101 class, to advanced moves for all skill levels. He fosters a friendly learning environment with the help of assistant brown belt instructors Derek, Corey, JJ Mike, and Kevin. • Muay Thai class is also available, run by Danny and Maggie, who are skilled muay thai fighters and cultivated instructors in the “art of eight limbs”. They are both exceptional in fine-tuning details according to the students concerns. • The MMA class is run by Gil, who has experience and success in competing in combat sports. He is truly passionate about passing down his knowledge. • The academy also runs a wonderful kids program where they not only learn the art of jiu jitsu but also help develop a multitude of character building skills. If you are looking for a welcoming, clean academy with passionate instructors to teach you or your loved one a martial art, then look no further. If you have a thirst to compete in BJJ, Muay Thai, or MMA, they will willingly coach you. Regardless of skill level or knowledge, the NJ United team will support you throughout your journey. I am honored to be a part of the NJ United family and I hope for you to be part of it too!

NJ United MMA is the top place to train MMA in the state of NJ!! From day one I knew this was the place I had been looking for. Starting martial arts training for the first time can be a little intimating but I was greeted with open arms from all the instructors and other students since the first day I stepped on the mat. Jay Hayes is the most technical instructor I have ever met. He breaks down every little detail and explains everything so thoroughly. He takes the time to work with every single person in class whether its 10 or 30 people in a class he will make sure you understand what your doing, why your doing it, and how your opponent will probably react to what your doing to him. Whether you are a white belt or a black belt he will take the time to help you with whatever problems you are having on or even off the mat. Jay being a champion on the mat himself takes his experience and knowledge of BJJ and coaches it to his students. The results are countless golds at pretty much every tournament. Training BJJ with Jay Hayes and Muay Thai with Chris Jones is beneficial for me being a Police Officer. On a daily basis I encounter possible dangerous situations and being able to defend myself from a combative person is something I must know. I cannot explain how important it is to know what to do if a routine situation goes wrong while on the job. Whether your goal is to get in shape, learn self defense, or compete and become a champion one day, NJ United encourages you to set goals for yourself and accomplish those goals, and they will make sure to keep pushing you until you accomplish those goals. Recently I encouraged my 5 year old nephew to join as well, and although hes not too much into sports, he fell in love with NJ United MMA right away. Not only is this a great place to train but they also have great people training you. They treat you like family. I highly recommend NJ United MMA!!

I have been studying martial arts since I was a kid. (Isshin-Ryu karate brown belt, taekwondo green belt, previous Brazilian Jiu Jitsu). You can say I went from style to style, teacher to teacher until I found something that was fulfilling and real when it comes to real life application. Before I came to this school I did a thorough research to see if this was a good fit. I was impressed to find not only did the teacher did well in competitions but also did the majority of the students. I decided to give the school a try as a blue belt Brazilian Jiu Jitsu practitioner. I was amazed at how much as a blue belt I did not know. I’ve been with this school for 2 to 3 years now and I can tell you I am not the same person that walked in at the start of class. I love Jay Hayes teaching style. He spends one month on a certain technique and makes you drill it over and over again. This makes it certain that it stays in your mind. Then the next month he moves into another technique and sometime goes back to the previous technique to ensure that you did not forget it. For this reason I remember stuff from 2 years ago. He is very good at coaching his students when they compete outside the school whether it’s Brazilian ju jitsu to full MMA. One time I saw him attend a grappler’s competition to help coach all his students and he stayed there from 8 in the morning till 9pm and then woke up the next day to do it all over again. If that is not dedication I dont know what is. Hes very patient with his teaching and helps all students whether they pick up fast or not. Also the students in the class are very friendly and are not cocky at all. They are also very knowledgeable and very willing to help push you forward. I must say I have found something fulfilling and real when it comes to real life application of martial arts and have not regretted one day walking into that door the first day of class.
