The power to our major appliances went out one weekend, so I called our usual electrician, who happens to be our next door neighbor. He was working on another job and said it might be a couple of hours, so I picked J.C. Moss out of the phone book and called them. At no time did I say it was an emergency, or that the situation was dire or urgent, and at no time did the woman with whom I spoke say the service would cost me more than the usual rate or indicate what the fee for the service would be. About forty-five minutes later, two guys, neither of them appearing to be over 17 years of age, show up at my front door. They shut the power off, test our meter, and tell us its an NES (Nashville Electric Service) problem, all in the span of about fifteen minutes. I ask what we owed them, and the guy says "$260." I said "What!?" He explained that there was a two-hour minimum, etc., which was not disclosed to me on the phone or before the service was performed. While I expected to possibly pay more on the weekend, I also expected the fee to be somewhat reasonable, not patently outrageous. In any case, I would expect to be notified before being charged such a high fee. My neighbor, whos worked in the trade for 30 years, said he charges $89 for a weekend service call, and that hed never heard of anyone charging that much for the service provided.
