When my girlfriend and I entered Summit Climbing Gym, we instantly felt uncomfortable. I not only noticed the staff did not seem to care, but the whole place was very dirty. Upon preparing to climb the warm up wall, we noticed that the ropes looked like they were very old, and starting to fray. A belay device is a device used to secure a climber from falling. The particular belay device being used at this gym is called a Petzel Gri-Gri. They require a rope be between 10mm and 11mm thick to properly move through the device. The ropes at this gym are the wrong type of ropes. They bought cheap ropes that expand when they get old... and these were about 13-15mm thick, 2-4mm thicker than they should have been. This is dangerous, because to lower someone... you have to put one hand on the climber side, and pull up while the other is releasing the cam on the Gri-Gri. This means that the climber is free to hit the deck in the event of a failure. Another thing I noticed is the way the top rope setup was different for every wall. Top roping is where you have someone on the ground belaying (spotting) the person climbing, and a rope going to the top of the wall, securing the climber from falling. It does not really matter which way the rope is strung through the rig at the top, whether its climber side out, or in. When I asked why they did this, the manager said that they did not know how to do it right the first time, so as the ropes were failing, they would string them up right. It would take an average aid climber 5 min per wall to make them all the same if it really were a problem. But its not. The fact that they thought it was a problem scares me. The holds on the walls were also a huge concern of mine. I encountered several holds that twisted as I tried to grab them. Some would say that it simulates real rock situations... But in a gym... with holds like this, it can be dangerous. You can get caught in them... cut yourself, or even get a harness wedged between the wall and a hold. I have seen this happen before, and its a pain to deal with. I like to pay a day pass fee... when the gear is set right. Everything from the tie-ins, to the carabiners which supported the climbers were so old that I just wanted to leave. My novice climber girlfriend did not feel safe here. She doesnt know what to look for, but she knows the difference between the way a good gym is set up and this place. I would run away from this place... Frisco Canyons is SOOO much better. More professional too.

Ive been climbing at Summit for almost two years now and I cant say enough good things about it. Its the perfect place to hang with friends and get a great workout, mind and body. This is a great gym that does a fantastic job introducing beginners to the world of rock climbing. Gym equipment is too safe if anything. The top ropes are of a confidence inspiring thickness, and all toproping stations feature floor anchors and gri-gri (auto-locking) belay systems. Any safety issues that arise, such as loose holds, worn equipment, and improper belay technique, are addressed immediately! But they are also stellar about catering to experienced climbing. Most routes are nothing short of brilliant, as they have super experienced and creative setters with a bank of almost any hold thats ever been molded. Most recently, Kyle Clinkscales and Stan Borodyansky (read: "Billion-Time National Champion Coaches" ) took ownership of the gym, and as a result the climbing quality has only gotten better and better. The staff is super knowledgeable and super friendly, and very attentative to beginners and children. They create a comfortable atmosphere for learning to climb your first wall, or projecting your burly 5.12. Summit also features a premium bouldering cave! With a wide array of routes from "super easy" to "too difficult for humans," and magnificently sculpted features (arches, overhang, slabs, dihedrals, 45, aretes), youll never get bored or outclimb this gym. The lead climbing section of the gym is just as dynamic! Did I mention that all routes are reset on a regular basis? This means theres plenty of time to work your projects, but still a motivation to send what wont be there in a few weeks... Summit is simply a FANTASTIC climbing gym. They offer day passes, gear rental, and memberships. So whether you just want to try something new, or are looking for something a little more committed, theyve got you covered. Prices are certainly reasonable. At most, around 15-20 for a one-day pass. Memberships are generally around $50 a month, and you can certainly get your moneys worth. Right now they also seem to be pushing for a lot of exposure, so there are a number of great deals and specials always available.

I went into the Summit climbing gym in grapevine, tx last week and booked a party. I was not told about much of anything. I was told there would be a $100 deposit, and the balance paid upon check out the day of the party. i was told i would recieve 1 host, and that every person attending would need to sign a waiver. Never once was I told that the deposit was nonrefundable, nor was i given anything to sign, neither in person or via email. i went in yesterday to cancel the party ( 2 &1/2 weeks in advance) and was told that my deposit would not be refunded, but they proceeded to still cancel my event. I was then given an email for the manager and told to contact him about my deposit, and he has yet to respond. needless to say, the customer service is poor and the manager clearly is unresponsive. If a company has this vague of a policy disclaimer, and requires no signature acknowledging refund policies or gym policies then a full refund should be returned. i will never use summit to host any future event, and would discourage anyone else from using them aswell.

I have been to almost every climbing gym in Texas, and this one is one of the very best I have seen! It is incredibly fun, and definitely the cleanest gym Ive been to, which really means a lot! The staff are very friendly and I felt safe and comfortable with their help. I was also very impressed with the quality of the routes at this gym. Good routes are very difficult to set, and thus hard to find, but every route I tried at Summit was very fun and challenging at the right level. The gym also has a great lead wall and the routes on it are set in a broad range of difficulty, which is not true for many gyms who only set harder lead routes. There is a lot of room in the gym which is great for watching others and just relaxing between climbs. Summit is a perfect place for both beginners and avid rock climbers, and it seems like it would be a super fun place to have a party too!

Summit Climbing Gym is a great climbing gym. I have climbed here for years and rarely had any complaints. There are well marked routes for all levels and they are changed out regularly to keep regulars excited. The arch is the middle makes for fun and challenging routes. For the advanced climbers they have plenty of sport routes and bolts for those who are ready for that. The atmosphere is also very family friendly and the gym is safe for climbers of all types. I would highly recommend this gym for beginners to advanced as well as groups who are looking for a fun adventure.
