This gym is HUGE! I checked it out for a week trial, as I am new to the Houston area. There are FIVE floors of exercise in this building and it takes up the whole city block. The first floor has a few pools used for swimming laps for adults, a hot tub and a kiddie pool (all which are indoors). There is also a TRX group training room here as well. The second floor looks like youth group rooms and meeting rooms. The third floor boasts 5 large exercise rooms used for spin class, step class, Les Mills classes (Body Pump is my favorite), yoga class and various other classes. here is also about 6 indoor racket ball courts and a huge basketball court as well. The 4th floor has all of the cardio machines, exercise machines and the free weights as well. The 5th floor is a open hanging running track where you can walk. jog or run while looking down on people working out or look outside the windows into the downtown Houston environment. The only downside is the parking situation. The parking garage located on site is not very big and is only validated for members of the gym for up to 2 hours. It is free for everyone on Sunday, which is nice. There is something for everyone here at this YMCA and I suggest checking it out.

Great YMCA facilities and faculty, but the limited open hours are incredibly frustrating. It is a shame that the YMCA closes before sundown on Fridays and Saturdays (7PM and 6PM, respectively), and is only open for six hours on Sundays. On weeknights, the building closes at 10, and the pool area closes at 9:30. These hours are not at all accommodating to professionals, and will most likely cause me to forfeit my membership. Staying open just one hour later would allow me and many others the time we need after work. Such hours are archaic and do not correspond to the lives and schedules of the modern worker. Additionally, I feel that by closing early, especially on the weekends, the YMCA disregards its pursuit to provide a safe place for families and vulnerable teens. If young men cant play basketball past 7PM on a friday night, what will they get themselves into instead? Tellepsen Family Downtown should consider the modern era we live in, and accommodate the needs of its members. I would have no problem paying an extra $10 a month in order for the YMCA to be open at times convenient to me.

Staff was very friendly. Facility looked amazing. The only reason I give it 4 stars is because of an experience I had when taking my 7 year old there for her swim test. I am a mom of three kids. I had to bring my other two children with me. My other daughter is 10 years old and my son is 3. It was Friday night after 7pm. While in the almost completely empty dressing room near the pool, an elderly woman began berating me and my children because she thought my 3 year old "pointed at her." Honestly, we were so busy exploring we didnt even notice her until she interrupted us walking down the steps. I understand boys not being allowed in the womens dressing room, but a 3 year is still so young and innocent. If he did point at her, which i doubt, it didnt mean anything. He points at everything; the check in scanner, steps, a bird, a worm, dirt..... I hope this one awful, bitter senior citizen does not represent the culture of this Y.

I love Tellespen. Im getting back into the swing of exercising again and recently started the BodyPump classes. They are great and the instructors are wonderful. I cant wait to explore the other classes they offer. The Womens Wellness Center is great if youre a woman and want a more quiet place to workout. They have cardio machines and weight machines with a small free weight section in the corner. Theres always an attendant there to help you with questions or equipment. The larger workout room has about half the room for cardio machines and the other half is weights complete with squat racks. The staff all over is friendly and the food at the deli is delicious. Also you can get a discount on your membership fee if you make under a certain amount a year. Ask about it when you sign up and theyll explain in detail.

Caters to yuppies and people who think they run the place. Staff upstairs in womens center are attentive. Go to third floor where all machines are and youll feel the pressure. People who go there feel entitled to machines you are working out on. Ive had that done to me four times. Men and women will wait right next to you, not say anything and when they think you are done (2-3 sets) theyll try and get on machines. The Y should let people know by putting up signs stating "wait till someone is done with machine to get on". No joke. Towels are clean looking, but, they smell as though they have been sitting in machine for a while and come out smelling like an wet animal. There arent any rooms where you can do your own workouts at, just hallways or near elevators on floor levels.

One of the best gyms Ive been to in terms of size and cleanliness. Theres a plethora of different exercises you can do here, and you can do a class or do your own thing for them - swimming, spinning, running, lifting, and so on. There are plenty of showers, and they provide towels! Everything at the Downtown Y is quite clean, but I still recommend wearing shower shoes if youre walking around the locker room. The one thing that is keeping me from giving this place 5 stars - there is only 1 squat cage and 1 squat rack. Its a little annoying having to wait to use them, but for the amenities you get here, its worth the wait. Maybe not when you want to squat, though.

I love this Y - its clean, has great classes and lots of equipment. My only beef is the parking situation. They have a garage, but its tiny and fills up sooo quickly during peak hours. There are two lots across the street from the Y that are free after 5 PM, but BEWARE. My car got broken into last night...and the guy from the Y that filed an incident report so I was the 4th or 5th car to get broken into THAT DAY. Not cool. He said they were working on getting more security but I feel like theyve been saying that for a while. Just be weary if you park in those lots - dont keep anything in your car! Invest in a lock for the locker rooms or youll regret it!

Tellepsen downtown YMCA is one of the biggest in greater Houston area. It is very plush with new and upgraded equipment. They have a running track, innumerable cardio equipment including treadmills, ellipticals, cycles. It also has a lap pool, a play pool, a jacuzzi to relax after and 2 steam rooms. I take complete advantage of the group exercises they provide like kickboxing, spinning/cycling, body pump, Zumba (to name a few). It is buzzing in the evenings with a lot of Houstonites working hard to achieve their fitness goals. In spite of its prime location in downtown, the membership fees are very reasonable. I recommend it to one and all.

This is a pretty good gym. Theres enough room (weight room gets busy sometimes, but Ive always been able to get to the equipment I need maybe just not the moment I want it). The only bad thing I have to say about this place is that one time I brought a guest and one of the ladies at the front desk was so rude to us. Sorry we werent well versed in guest check-in. However, you cant let one bad carrot ruin the bunch. Most folks here are very kind and welcoming. I like the variety of classes, and for the most part, its clean and well attended to by staff. Ill keep this place as my home gym for a while.
