We bought our home with the help of Home Basic a couple years ago and we worked directly with Jared Shauers. Now that I look back at how everything transpired, I would like to give my personal recommendation for Home Basic. When we decided to look into buying a house, my sister told me about Home Basic and I decided to give them a call. I was inexperienced with home buying and all the different snags that can be involved with it. My experience was probably pretty typical to most home buyers—running into trouble with builders. You seriously need and experienced, hard-working agent on your side when dealing with builders. Jared Shauers fought hard for us every single step of the way and I know if it were not for him we would have ended up in trouble. We initially wanted to work with a building company to build our house, but the builder never kept appointments, didn’t provide accurate details and deadlines, and wasn’t being completely honest with us. We decided against working with the builder and I’m certain they would have kept our deposit if Jared hadn’t fought hard to get it back. He secured our cancelation with them with very little effort on our part and then worked quickly to find us the right home. Shortly after, we ended up falling in love with a new construction that was almost finished. We were concerned that we wouldn’t be able to complete the home before the tax credit’s expired in Utah. The builder seemed lazy and wasn’t keeping commitments. IF NOT FOR JARED WE WOULD NEVER HAVE LANDED THE TAX CREDIT AND MOVED INTO OUR HOME IN SUCH A TIMELY MANNER. He was a knight in shining armor and pushed the builder through to keep their deadline and ensured that all mistakes were corrected on the builder’s side. Even after the house purchase was completed, Jared continued to help us resolve any problems we had with the builders until everything was perfect. I still call Jared up from time to time just to get advice or help and he has always been a reliable source. I’m just grateful I jumped into buying a house at the time I did and that Home Basic was around. I’ve heard of nightmare stories from first-time buyers, but I’m happy to announce that we had a very enjoyable experience from Home Basic. I’m certain, in our case, that we would have had a nightmare of an experience if it weren’t for them. I will definitely not go through a any other agent or business when I buy my future homes, and I am recommending Home Basic to everyone I know.

Were currently in the process of buying a house through them. Justin Schauers is our agent, and Ive got nothing but good to say about him. He has been absolutely fantastic in the entire process. Its crazy how readily available hes been with our every request to see different houses. As Im writing this, were at the stage where we found a house, and our offer has been accepted, and now we just do all of the other pre-closing stuff. If there happens to be anything that they do mess up out of gross negligence, Ill be back to update this review. Lets just say that Im not expecting anything to go wrong. Also, you should know that Ive reviewed a hand-full of businesses here on Google. You can look at my reviews if you want. People who rate everything 5 stars or 1 star bother me. Even if I really like the business, I rarely give a 5/5 star rating. This is one of those rare places that I think deserves it. I cant speak for anyone else in the company because I dont know them, but Justin Schauers has been absolutely great to us. Ask for Justin. [update March 2014] First, a disclaimer: Nobody at Home Basics (or anywhere) solicited this update to my review here. This is just me talking. Even a couple of years after we bought our house through them, and the "transaction" is done, we continue to be impressed by them. I happen to be connected to Justin on Facebook (Certainly not a requirement to do business with them, FYI) and after our baby was born recently, they sent us a congrats card with a free pizza coupon and a free redbox movie code. No big deal, but it was nice. Thats just one example. Years out from the purchase, Im still happy with the home-buying process with them. And these "extras" are not necessary, but it just shows the personalized attention they give. Again, props to Home Basics, and Justin Schauers specifically.

GO SOMEWHERE ELSE! Aaron Schauers, the principal maintenance man for this company, is bad news. The ceiling recently collapsed in the home we are renting and he was sent to repair it. It took a week, and ended with him screaming at my husband and I. He threatened us with legal action, eviction, and "blogging." We responded with a letter stating we would pursue legal action or media coverage. He responed by calling CPS for environmental neglect. I know it was him because he is the only person who has ever been in our house who did not know we have a daughter (she was gone both times he came). Since CPS didnt know we have a daughter, it must have been him. It was purely harrassment, because the person sent to our house from CPS clearly stated that she did not find anything remotely resembling environmental neglect. Aaron will be hearing from my attorney soon. Ill be sure to update on this page with the results. It should be noted that, other than Aaron, the individuals at Home Basics Real Estate are exemplary. But one bad apple can spoil the whole renting experience. Ergo, a poor rating (only because a worse one isnt available).

Home Basics has managed rental houses from my fathers estate for going on 10 years. During that time I have had two major remodels, three bathroom updates and purchased an additional property. Each event was well organized with timely communication. All monies were handled by Jared and documented on the monthly statement. I recently visited all three houses and found all tenants to be very satisfied with Jareds work and style of management. All three properties were properly winterized and now ready for spring changes. All properties were in very good condition. I am convinced Home Basics screening process has not only found good tenants it also tends to keep good tenants. I dont remember the last day I have had a vacancy or at least missed a day of rent. I am very pleased with Jared and Home Basics and recommend their sales and management of real estate to anyone needing the personal touch on property they own or want to buy.

DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY WITH THESE PEOPLE. We dealt with the property management section and this was the worst experience Ive ever had with a property rental company! DONT WASTE YOUR MONEY WITH THESE PEOPLE. We were told that we couldnt fill out an application unless we gave them a deposit check. Upon approval they changed the move in dates on us making it impossible to move across 4 states in time. They refused to refund the whole deposit even though we had never signed a rental agreement stating that the property owners were going through difficult times and needed the money! We were never told up front that the deposit would be cashed before a rental agreement was signed or that a portion of it may be non-refundable if we didnt move into the property. Extremely bad experience and unprofessional, untrustworthy service. I would be leery of doing any type of real estate business with this company.
