We had to take one of our vehicles to the local Toyota dealer for service a few years ago for a warranty-related issue. While we were waiting in the customer lounge a service writer came out and sold an elderly lady a new air filter for her car, saying that the "installation" (which takes 5 seconds and requires no extra parts) of that part would cost $20 on top of the price of the filter. "Get absolutely as much money as you can from your customers because they probably dont know any better" seemed to be their business model. My first encounter with Joe was with a repair job I was doing myself, and it spoke volumes about how he is not like most auto mechanics. I had gotten to a point in the job that was past my ability level and called to see if he could help me out. Joe tried all sorts of tools in ways I never would have thought of, but the part (a badly seized oxygen sensor that I had been mangling for days) would not come loose without stripping the threads. When I asked him how much I owed him for the attempt (he spent probably 30 minutes on it before saying he didnt want to risk going further), he said, basically, "I didnt fix anything, so you dont owe me anything." That initial experience made my wife and I loyal customers until we moved out of Charlottesville, and Im still searching in vain for a Joe equivalent in the place where we live now. In every experience we had with Joe he demonstrated advanced expertise, honesty, efficiency, and patience in dealing with my stubborn D-I-Y attitude. Not once in a dozen or more visits did I get the impression that Joe was recommending any unnecessary procedures or overcharging for any work. Joe actually found us all sorts of ways to save money on repairs, and his advice has helped me though many repairs and maintenance jobs that I did, or tried to do, myself. The design of the garage is a perfect symbol for the way Joe and Mandy do business: the 2 bays face the parking lot and are wide open. Unlike many other places, you can see what is being done to your vehicle and talk face-to-face with the person working on it without having to go through a service writer or other middleman. Were a few hours away now, but I still have half a mind to take our vehicles there rather than deal with anybody else. Those of you lucky enough to still live in the area would do well to make Joe your mechanic. I give his business my highest recommendation.

Im extremely pleased with my experience at Peacock. My car had an intermittent issue where it wouldnt want to shift into gear, and I brought it to two other shops first. The first shop, which I had worked with a few other times, couldnt diagnose the issue. Then I brought it to the dealership and they recommended a full transmission replacement which would have cost me upwards of $3,000 and ultimately wouldnt have fixed the problem. I had heard great things about Peacock, so I brought my car to Joe last week. He took the time to listen to me and understand exactly what I had been experiencing so he could properly diagnose the issue. It ended up being a bad master cylinder, which was 1/10th the cost of what the dealership suggested. Joe was down to earth, professional, and very reasonable on price. You can tell he truly enjoys his craft, and hes good at it. The only downside is Peacock is usually booked at least a week out, but that really speaks to the quality of service you get here and the number of satisfied customers that come back. I would absolutely recommend this place, Ive been to a number of auto repair shops in Charlottesville and this is hands down the best.

My 97 Honda Civic, old and rusted though it may be, is my baby, and I was very anxious when a bunch of things went wrong with it all at once: the check engine light came on, the speedometer needle died, and eventually my car wouldnt start at all. A friend strongly insisted I have it taken to Peacock Auto and vouched for Joes good work and character. I had it towed there and Joe had the car running by the end of the day, plus he fixed an annoying rattling sound in my exhaust pipe for free. Id completely forgotten to mention that my check engine light and speedometer werent working, so I took it back the next day and nervously told him that if the repairs were going to cost a lot, Id have to return next week after Id gotten paid. He had both problems fixed by the end of the day, free of charge. I really wanted to shake his hand but we agreed not to because it was covered in black grease! I absolutely recommend Peacock Auto, they went above and beyond to take care of my busted old baby and they are exactly what youre looking for in a local Charlottesville business.

Words cannot say enough about the wonderful service I received at Peacock Auto Service on Meade Ave. Id noticed a metal on metal noise in my brakes driving home the night before and was actually scared to drive the vehicle but had no other way to town. So, the next morning, I left my vehicle at Peacock with no appointment, hoping they could get my car in to look at and hopefully repaired. Later that morning, I talked to Joe, the owner, and was told they would do everything they could to take care of my vehicle. Just hours later, I got a call from Joe, telling me what I needed and how much it would cost to fix. Joes wife called later to tell me my vehicle was ready. When I went to pick the vehicle up, I met Joes wife, who was very helpful and friendly. I was able to meet Joe and thank him in person for the wonderful service Id received. I highly recommend Peacock to all my family and friends. Quality work, wonderful service, affordable rates and a genuine caring place to do business. Thanks Joe!

Joe is the most straight forward and honest mechanic I have ever taken my cars too. He is very bright and articulate and when you bring your car in he explains the issue and quotes a price for the repairs so there are no surprises. Whether the job is big or small Joe is the man!! Case and point: I brought my Chrysler Town and Country in with a mysterious problem where it wouldnt start intermittently.. Another mechanic had it for a month and was completely stumped.. Joe targeted the problem in short order and got me back on the road at a very reasonable price.. It has been running and starting smooth ever since Joe repaired it... As far as the small stuff, no more Jiffy Lube for me... I schedule an appointment, Joe looks over my car and changes my oil and filter and Im on my way in 15 min!! Joe and his wife Mandy are a joy to do business with. I highly recommend them...

Took my car in with seemingly two separate issues, and I presented it to Joe that way. He took a look at it and told me hed call me the next day. He calls me and tells me that the two issues are one and the same and quotes me a price to fix it. Im skeptical, but I agree and hope for the best. After waiting for the part and taking the car back in I get my car back with both problems fixed, he was right! I truly believe another shop would have tried to sell me on the fact that they were separate to increase cost to me. Joe explained the issue, what he did to fix it, and his reasoning for everything in a way that I very much appreciated. I was treated like I had intelligence and was not simply a walking sack of cash. I was very impressed and highly recommend taking your car here the next time you have an issue.
