well....took my car there after my automatic tran went out while reversing/shifting to D4 one cold morning...put it in park, shut it off for a few minutes turned it back on to reset itself. Drove directly to Cottman Transmission on mathis avenue. They called me back with a quote of $2800 dollar for a rebuild and torque converter replace met, i agreed to the price and decided to have them change the front brakes as well, extra $200. Got my car back a few days later and $30 dollars to my name. Transmission shifted like new the first 45 days or so...i felt the first hard shift while doing 30mph going up a hill, a few weeks later i started to notice how jerky the downshifts were and they just got worse...the beginning of the end..again lol...and my NEW brakes and rotors were squealing so goddamn loud!!!!! With my rebuild i got a 1yr/12000 mile warranty, i took it back the first time complaining of the brake issue and the hard shifting, i was told "The brakes are supposed to squeal, in Europe everyones brakes squeal loud. And your tran is just downshifting normally" Took it back a few more times complaining again and was denied help again. So about 5 months after my car was hardshifting basically all the time, made a huge jolt when i shifted into park after a 45-60 min drive, when shifting from 1st to 2nd it would drop down in neutral stop accelerating the jump into 2nd.....i did see my transmission off my car(still put together), i asked the mechanic if i could see the damaged parts, he takes a few clutches laying right next to a pulled apart FORD transmission and shows me the damage on the FORD transmission....i put so much (blind) faith in them that i rationalized with myself that thats where they probably throw their damaged parts at or something.. I remember i was called to come pick up my car, and by the time i got there my car would be done. I left my home 20 minutes after the call, walked in and the only person there was the mechanic(who was playing with his 5 year old son and having lunch) he informed me that he would finish putting the brakes on my car which was all that was left to do AFTER he finished eating his lunch...so i waited and watched..then waited some more....my car was done after 90 minutes and backed out my 2000 honda accord and parked it. Then the manager walked in and took my $3000 dollars and said to the mechanic "Vehicle has been road tested correct?" the mech said Yup........i watched my car lowered and backed out of the garage and shut off...i was so annoyed by then i just wanted to go home. I hope this helps people who want to find a good shop to use, Yorkshire serice center is the most honest garage ive found, they charge 60 an hour and actually do what you pay for, if they find a part thats wearing down they will tell you that you probably have X amount of time before said part will need to be replaced. I took my car there for an inspection last year and i had 12% tint windows all the way around, illegal tint and they couldnt pass it without the driver/passenger windows were de-tinted. So they pulled off all the the tint for me at no charge so i could pass! DO NOT GO TO COTTMAN TRANSMISSION FOR ANYTHING BESIDES DIRECTIONS TO A REAL SHOP THAT KNOWS WHAT THEY ARE DOING!!!!

Cottman Transmission business model is this. You arrive with a problem you think may be caused by your transmission. You ask for an estimate. They tell you, based on their previous 20 plus years experience and all their knowlege, there is absolutely no way Cottman Transmission can provide you an estimate. (This is how the money trap is set up.) They explain to you, "Gee how would we know. We cant be sure because we can not see inside the transmission." Since you also can not see inside the transmission, this sounds reasonable to you. Cottman tells you they will have to remove the transmission. You agree. (You dont realize it but the Cottman money trap has been sprung on you.) Cottman tell you, it will cost several houndred dollars to remove the transmission....just to give you a reasonable estimate. The transmission is removed and dissassembled. Cottman calls you and now tells you, it will cost between $2000. and $3000. or more. (See other complaints.) The point is, based on Cottmans years of experience, all along, Cottman knew what the range of the average repair cost was. They could have given you this number ...even before they removed the transmission. We could have used this number to decide whether to it was worth it to repair the car, trade it in or junk it. It is Cottmans business model to trap you into a costly repair or at a minimum the cost to remove the transmission! Take my advice and stay away from Cottman!!! Ampco Transmissions has the same business model. Instead, I recommend Trans Auto Dynamics in Gainsville, VA. They have repaired several transmissions for me including 4 wheel drive transmissions. All of my Trans Auto Dynamics transmission repairs have continued to work flawlessly. Trans Auto Dynamics will happily give you a cost estimate range to rebuild your transmission without going throught the cost of removing your transmission. Take my advice and stay away from the Cottman people!!! When I last visited Ampco Transmissions, they had the same business model as Cottman so beware of Ampco Transmissions too.
