MAHRI IS MY HAIRDRESSER FOR LIFE! After a few well-intentioned “I can do it!” bouts with going blonde at home I looked in the mirror at my patchy quilt of a head of hair and thought, “I need professional help.” I had heard of Mahri at Katie Blue Salon from a few friends that go to her. When I entered the darling, friendly salon I had nearly two inches of ashy brown grow out, hidden panels of mismatched coppery ombre (not on purpose), and an air of desperation. Mahri to the rescue. She was warm and knowledgeable from the get-go. Mahri is a consummate professional. She actually took the time to do a proper consultation with me. How rare! We discussed how I usually style my hair, what I was going for, what my future hair goals were. FINALLY! A hairdresser that LISTENS! Now I have been going blonde for a very long time and holding a cosmetology license, I am very familiar with hairdressing jargon and the all too frequent shortcuts. I wanted to loose all coppery/golden tones in my hair. I wanted a fresh slate of champagne blonde, think “Marilyn Monroe.” This may be the hardest possible procedure to perform because a perfect light blonde is the absence of any color, and the perfect tone. It is a major process. It is not just a matter of slapping on bleach. Mahri could see that my hair was like an abandoned puppy, begging for some TLC. TLC she gave! Mahri delivered a full color correction on me. I was overwhelmed at the steps Mahri took to ensure my hair maintained its integrity. I have been in other stylist’s chairs many times to be given the quickest possible treatment, always leaving me dreaming of having the Ultimate Experience one day. Aside from her incredible technical skills Mahri has amazing customer service. “How do you feel? Are your comfortable? Would you like some cookies or tea?” I felt like Royalty. Going to Mahri now I laugh at the times I thought saving money by DIYing my hair color was a good idea. My hair is my ultimate constant accessory. It is more important than what bag I am carrying, the clothes on my back, or my makeup. Of all the things I spend money on, why had I tried to cheap out on the most important thing? Having good hair gives me confidence. I love the way my hair shimmers, the way it illuminates my face and smile, the way it highlights my true personality. Mahri gave this to me; this is a gift that I will gladly pay for. I feel so incredibly blessed to have found my hair colorist for life in Mahri.

I have waited over a month to post this review, because I believe in the old proverb, "Never write a letter when youre angry." But, Im sorry to say I got a very bad haircut, and from the salon owner at that. I have very thick, wavy hair and wanted a bob that I could wear natural (wavy) as I have no time to flatiron my hair every day. But I also wasnt opposed to wearing it straight every once in a while if it was possible. I really didnt want much in length cut at all, but more of a reshaping to make it look more flattering and be more manageable. I brought a picture and all of this was discussed upfront. To be fair, the owner, whose name is Kate, told me she wasnt the "curly expert". At the same time though, she said she certainly could cut my hair as she has very similar hair type. It took her two hours to give me what should have been a simple haircut. She cut my hair so short in the back that I nearly cried when I saw it. I liked the idea of a stacked bob but this was so short and the angle from back to front so severe it just looked ridiculous and very unflattering. It was nothing like the picture and much shorter than I asked for, at least in the back. In addition, she flatironed my hair the entire time she was cutting it, because she said, "this is how I cut hair." But why, when I told her I wanted to wear it wavy, would she cut it only to be styled straight? I tried for a month to wear this cut wavy, but it just looked too terrible. Now I must flatiron my hair every single day, which takes forever, because it makes it look a little better (though it is still really short in the back, a month+ later). I ended up cutting my own hair in the front to soften the severe angle from front to back. The "stack" in the back is really cut weird too- very boxy and odd. Overall it is an awful haircut that has just left me kind of in shock. I give 1 star for each hour that was spent on my hair. I was hopeful based on the other reviews, but never again will I go to a salon based on internet ratings. From now on, its personal referral or nothing.

Be sure you understand what kind of appointment youre setting up. They have the option of whats called a "dry cut" here, which is pretty worthless. I was unaware of this and have curly hair so when they asked me over the phone whether I wanted my hair cut while wet or dry, of course I said dry, but I did not expect that after cutting, no wetting/diffusing/styling was part of the package. Ive never heard of such a thing before. I felt rushed during the haircut and did not get the sense that the stylist really cared about what I wanted. It looked decent before I left, so I thought Id go home and wash it and see, and if it was bad after washing and styling, make them fix it. Well, it is very lopsided, and it seems she barely touched the back of my head. I have a little ducktail that was not there before... It almost made me cry. No "style" to it, really. When I called the next day to express my concern, it became clear that "the customer is always right" is not a phrase that this soon is familiar with. I was told that the stylist was going on vacation, so I couldnt get a fix with her until almost a month later. And I couldnt go to another stylist because they said they couldnt pay anyone else to fix her work. Um... Wouldnt you rather absorb the cost and potentially keep a customer/avoid a negative review? The receptionist also argued with me, saying that the stylist said I had declined a shampoo and the dry cut issue was my fault. Yes, I did, because it was offered at the beginning of the appointment, and I did not want my hair cut wet. I also did not expect that no shampoo meant no wetting and styling after the cut! Eventually, they offered to fit me in in the next couple days, but it would still only be a dry cut because thats all they had time for (even though I offered to pay more), but I declined because I was just too annoyed and didnt want to walk out of the place again not knowing. Now Im out $55 and a few inches of hair.

I was given the recommendation to go to Katie Blue Salon for any fantasy color needs as I wanted to go from my natural dark brown to a dark charcoal grey. I was set up with Nadia who was lovely to work with and spent a whole afternoon with me lightening and coloring my hair. I realized after my appointment that the color (although a very pretty shade and wonderful job done by Nadia) wasnt quite what I was going for. I contacted the salon the following day and spoke with the receptionist about coming in again to have my color tweaked a little bit. The receptionist was more than helpful setting another appointment up at no cost to me. Nadia was very understanding and took the time to work with me to achieve the look I wanted. I love my hair and couldnt be happier with the way it turned out! Yesterday I received a hand written note from Nadia personally thanking me for coming in again and giving her the opportunity to fix my color. A kind personal gesture that I very much appreciated. Im so impressed with the service and staff at Katie Blue and would recommend them to anyone wanting a unique fantasy color. Thank you Nadia!
