Ive been climbing at Sportrock with my family for about 10 years and weve been members for 8 of those. There are few equals for the quality of routes in my experience. Climbed in a lot of gyms, across the country, and the route setting is way, way above average. The routes usually last less than two months but given the size of the gym there are new routes, by section, every week or so. Staff is mostly cool - more so laid back at Sterling than Alexandria in my opinion, but we are just looking to be left alone and we are. Yoga, gym equipment and party rooms available, but for us it is all about climbing. To that end, junior teams, classes, competitions, annual member appreciation event mean you can get as involved as you are ambitious. My daughter and I climb weekly and so the membership brings down the cost significantly over paying walk-up rates. Really convenient hours as well as well members-only times - they dont force non-members to leave so they moved members only to the mornings which makes sense I guess. We tend to climb on weekends so kid parties and other such activities can get a bit annoying but I also understand they need to make money. Looking forward to the amazing renovations currently underway at Alexandria which sound and look incredible - big up to Lillian for her commitment and investment to take on such revolutionary changes...and for taking membership feedback into account in influencing future plans. Theyve Come along way and seem dedicated to keep going!!

My daughter came here for a birthday party. We had signed a waiver online in advance and got the confirmation. When we arrived, We were told that they didnt have the waiver. We told them we did it online and they said OK, They would find it. 10 minutes later we got a text from the hostess of the party that they did not have the waiver, so we would have to come back and sign one so that our daughter could climb. We came back and signed, at were told that there was no problem, that they had been letting her climb meanwhile. That not only turned out not to be true, it turned out they never bothered to inform the people in the back that the waiver was signed a second time, so she still wasnt allowed to climb. By the time we sorted this out, the party was nearly over, she was crying and didnt want to climb after waiting almost an hour. No apology from anyone. Id give negative stars if I could.

Fantastic bouldering with ratings more akin to outdoor climbs than gym climbs. Bouldering ranges from "E4" (sub-V0) to V8 or so. Theres a spire and some very overhung sections, as well as two walls with stem-able features. Top rope section is a bit on the small side. The easier routes suffer a bit from repeated use and sometimes have rather slick holds. The small cave with sport lead routes is the most interesting feature on their walls outside of their bouldering. Theres a small section in the back with pullup bars, a variety of campus boards, a wall full of practice holds/boards, and one of those forever climb machines. Theres also a small workout area up front with a couple treadmills and some free weights. Its a great gym if the location is right for you.

We visited as a family, paid for assisted climb and joined as members. Ended up regretting it. I ended up having to get belay certificate to be able to belay my kids as all of the staff there were busy with others. When I wanted to climb myself, I had to wait for quite a long time to get someone to assist, in the end ended up leaving. Not worth it, crowded and even if it wasnt the place is a bit outdated. Certainly not worth the price. We had joined membership but then regretted it, most classes you still have to pay even as a member, discount is minimal. And if you dont live in Sterling, but closer to DC metro area, its a ways off road with a number of tolls to cross.

Having visited quite a few indoor climbing gyms throughout the nation, i have come to appreciate this facility more and more. The routes are not overly crowded, so you dont have to play "which is my hold" while climbing. The staff is friendly, available, and attentive to any issues that arise (remediation of spinners, etc) The routes, which are updated about once every 40 days or so are -my opinion- true to the rating they are given, and not watered down (a 5.9 in this facility would be rated a 5.10+ in Earthtreks) Facility can get a bit crowded at peak times, but it does not last very long.

I visit this gym when I travel to the DC area for work. The staff and the members are super friendly and helpful. Traveling solo from out of town, they have helped me find partners to climb and test with. The route setting is interesting and nothing is a gimme at any rating, which I really like. If I had one complaint, it would be that they need to to add more bolt lines for leading. I tend to focus solely on leading and there are many routes that are not lead-able because there are no bolts close enough to the route.

Great indoor route climbing and bouldering gym. They are undergoing some much needed remodeling and expansion, although it looks like they arent adding more tall walls - just bouldering and new yoga and birthday party rooms. They have a great junior team and a good close knit group of regulars and staff. Routes change frequently and usually feel fresh. The route setters are great and theres always fun variety to climb at a variety of levels.

Climbing is the greatest, and Sportrock is the greatest. The offer beginner classes, lead classes, skill classes, and yoga. The staff is super helpful and you dont get the "gym bro" vibe like you get at some other gyms. The routes change regularly and are challenging and fun enough to make you want to come back.

Really great community with a good place to try out rock climbing or train if youre already into the sport. Staff is always helpful and the membership perks are very reasonable given the membership cost. Highly encourage anyone who hasnt tried rock climbing to do so. It may be the activity youre looking for!

Pretty clean facility. TONS of space! Very high walls and tons of courses to take. And they have a legit gym to run, lift etc in. Lots of fun, a great family activity (its kid friendly, they have a kids wall and even do parties) and could be a good place for a fun date :)

This is a great gym, especially for more experienced climbers. Not that there arent easier climbs, but there are a great deal more difficult routes. This gym also seems to suffer far less from huge crowds that some other gyms see making it easier to see a variety of climbs.

These guys are GREAT!! The staff is extremely friendly. I work for a daycare and we have taken our Summer Campers here for the past couple of years and the staff are great with the kids. I would highly recommend them to anyone!

Awesome facility and staff. They continue to improve the facility. My 9-yr old enjoyed week summer camp and then enrolled in rec team and spends 3-8 hrs per weekend bouldering.
