I had Day and Nite come by in late May 2013 to fix an air cleaner that was acting up. My initial contact was with Hugh who was very polite, courteous, and helpful. I scheduled an appointment for them to come out. The tech that came out (Todd) was also very helpful and polite. However, the problem appeared to be a bit unusual and we eventually had to apply a workaround fix mentioned in my air cleaner manual (the air flow switch was not detecting adequate air flow to turn on the electronic air cleaner so we wired it to "always on"). After several visits and hundreds of dollars my problem seemed resolved. My air cleaner was finally working again. Honestly, my only complaint was the price of the labor -- as other reviewers have noted, Day and Nite is more expensive than other shops for labor. Pricing on parts seems fair with the part pricing I found online. I decided to hold off on posting my review to see how everything held out. Three months later, and I pulled my electronic air filters to clean them off -- once again I noticed that the "performance light" was out. I initially thought this may be due to the cells being so dirty -- they had lots of dirt on them and I had heard the static snaps every so often so I knew they had been working. Unfortunately, after I had cleaned them and given them three hours to dry, when I put them back into the cleaner the "performance" light was again out. Sometime within the three months since the air cleaner had been repaired it had failed again. My rating right now is based on the very short duration that the repair lasted (3 months). I am contacting Day and Nite to give them a chance to resolve -- I spent a lot of money (close to $1000 to get this fixed). To be fair, all employees have been very professional and courteous from Hugh, Todd, to the front desk person at their office. Will post an update once I learn more.

I cant tell you much for thier plumbing skills, but for HVAC work, thier charges are outrageous. After spending 3 days with temperatures inside the house dipping below 52 degrees, I was less inclined to argue about them ringing up the charges, to replace the transformer that I had already diagnosed as the problem. The sham is the service call. I guess the $65 service call is just to drive to your door. They will then charge you $145 to diagnose the problem with your furnace. Right off the bat, your bill amounts to $200+ and no parts are yet added. The technician did affirm as I suspected that the transformer was the culprit. The charge for the transformer and installation was $269. I became quite angry at that point, and argued that a transformer could not cost more than $30. He argued that it was my responsibility to pay an outrageous amount for parts so that they could stock parts for their business. Although this may be a regular practice for the government, most would operate with inventory as a part of being in business... I am mostly angry with myself for getting sucked into the sham. But when you are cold, you will agree to nearly anything. I just didnt believe that they could continue to tack on fee after astromomical fee. They can and did try. He did finally agree not to charge a diagnostic fee, but it wasnt for lack of trying. In the end, I am warmer and richer for the experience, but a lot lighter ($358) in the wallet for an hours time and a simple $30 generic part. My suggestion is to not sign anything before they do their own diagnoses and give you an exact figure of the amount of the repair. If they want your business, that is only fair. If they dont agree, its a pretty good sign they are out to sham you...

A mixed experience. The plumber was on time, was friendly, did the job well, and kept the place clean. Unfortunately the scheduler did not convey what the job entailed so he came with different expectations and without the parts necessary so had to go get them. The price - to say I feel cheated would be a gross understatement. I share the blame here because I was in a hurry, had worked with the company before (on the heating side), trusted them, and this was a small job so I didnt request a quote beforehand. I learned my lesson. They charge by the task, not time, no matter how easy or difficult. So the rate came out to over $250 per hour that he spent here. Materials were on top of that (I supplied all but one piece). The original fee was 30% higher but after I spoke with the manager, they went back and took that off because the job was easier than they expected. To put it in perspective; the task was to replace a shower valve (wall already remove, valve exposed and I supplied the new valve) and then cut a shower drain pipe down a couple inches (I supplied the dremel to cut it because he didnt have anything that would work), and then glue a 3 piece drain basket to the drain pipe. Again, everything exposed. Total cost before taxes was $1,124.00 (thats after they reduced it by 30%). Their explanation was that they were a big company with large overhead and they were focused on corporate customers. My 2 general contractors I am using on the project had fits and felt that $500 would be high but not unheard of for the task. Obviously Ill be using other plumbers in the future.

My current concern is that about 5 years ago we had contracted Day and Nite to bring gas into the house, put in a gas furnace, plumb to the deck for the BBQ, put in a stub in the fireplace and stub out for a future gas stove top. All in the contract. The furnace is fine with an issue brought up by another reviewer but has since been fixed speedily. Techs have all been courteous Issues- We finally bought a gas stove top in June of 2014. When we looked into installing it we found that they had NOT hard piped to future to the stove. My wife called them and they said theyd check the contract. after a few weeks, and a few more calls from my wife, they did and sure enough we had paid for that. Another 4 weeks later they sent someone, very nice, to investigate. He saw the previous work and agreed it was not per contract and would work to get this fixed. a few weeks of no activity later my wife called again and "unfortunately" the man that came out no longer worked there. She then contacted the manager, nice on the phone, and he said hed look into it. Now its November, still no activity, and a few un-returned calls and emails. Furnace - We had a company come out to clean the air ducts but ran into difficulty as the furnace was installed with the duct access under the house rather than at the bottom of the furnace. They said theyd fix that too. still not fixed. Im am an electrician and have some push in the trades. Im now going to start pushing.

We had a service contract with Day&Night where they maintained our furnace and gas fireplaces. They also fixed a water leak for us and did a fine job. Our impression has been that they seemed a little expensive but they do a good job and are knowledgeable. All fine and good. This past week we noticed our water heater is leaking so we asked them for a quote. Our furnace room is crowded and small so we need a "power direct vent water heater" , not a run of the mill unit. Fine. Their quote: $4200 for the unit. Huh? Gold plated?, guaranteed for life? No. Thats just what they cost. I find out after a few calls that a company in Ballard sells them for $2400. Must be a typo right. No. You dont get this wrong if you know water heaters. Thats a 75% markup. Everybody needs to make a little profit to run a successful business, but 75% is treating your customers with contempt. Good bye Day&Night. UPDATE: I purchased the unit myself from Consolidate Supply in Ballard, they delivered it to my garage: $2700 with tax and delivery. I got a quote for installation from Seattles Best Plumbing and Rooter who had been recommended to me from friends ... $550 to install and they did a great job in two hours. This in contrast to the 3+ hour, $320/hr quoted from Day&Night. In the end, all tolled I figure I came in about half of D&N.
