Ive been a member for over two years now. Super duper uber convenient to where I live, which is a huge bonus/plus for me. Overall it has been very positive, but like any place there are going to be pros and cons: Pros: 1. Wide range of equipment (cardio, weights, mats, etc), spread across a good number of square feet. 2. Wide variety of classes offered, price is included in membership (which is why the cost is higher than some, I believe) 3. Friendly staff, generally very positive vibe. 4. 30 minute personal training session included in membership each month! Great way to have a check in and have some accountability without paying extra. 5. They solicit feedback regularly, though it isnt very transparent on how they actually act upon it. 6. Parking is included in membership (though Ive never used it). 7. Theres a sauna! 8. They try to participate in local events, promote local businesses. Cons: 1. While some equipment is new (appears to be the more "trendy" types), a few groups feel neglected. There is really only one good Stair Master (out of three), and only one rowing machine (the other two are a joke - one doesnt have a computer and the other is an ANCIENT wooden water-resistance model). Neither of these two types have been upgraded or fixed in the last two years (despite my regular requests). 2. The wide variety of classes often take place during the day (between 9 and 5), which makes it hard for desk-jobs like me to take advantage. Would love to see more weekend/weeknight variety.

Pros: The location is excellent for those that live in Green Lake and would just like to walk to their work out. There is no pretension or meat market atmosphere, the staff is more than just generically friendly and the, mostly older, clientele never pack the gym or whine about the lack of constant upgrades in the equipment. The personal trainers love what they do and it shows. There is no contract to join. There are no obnoxious TVs everywhere to draw your gaze while you run. Its always easy to get on any machine you want. Cons: The equipment is in decent shape but almost all 10 years old. The monthly price is a little higher than more modern gyms.

I was a little skeptical at first because it seemed like the new owners were too slick. They have a system for everything including free time with a personal trainer every month. But, after a few months Im a big fan. I though the free sessions with a trainer were just to try to sell me - nope. I ended up getting 6 sessions anyway, but I approached Betsy a week after my free session. They actually called me to ask my opinion on changing the time of a yoga class! This place is growing on me every month and I give them a ton of credit for actually talking to their members about the changes being made. Kudos!

Old equipment, constantly under construction, just sort of generally run down. Odd entrance requirements (you need 2 cards to get in) and rates as high as much nicer places. No free parking. Boxing "studio" is a closet with a heavy bag, and you have to move the broken cardio equipment to use it. Honestly, location and lack of competition are what keep this place going. Think of it as an overpriced Y. Staff are generally friendly and helpful, and the vibe is good.

I cant say enough good things about American Athlete. The new owners, Tony and Henry, always greet me by name and make a concerted effort to get to know their customers. They have made a lot of improvements to this gym---more classes, cheaper rates, and more equipment. I was a member of Andersons, and I am much happier now that it is American Athlete. I pay less and get better service. I cant say enough good things about American Athlete!

I love my new neighborhood! Im here to stay. Ive held off writing a review for a couple months because I require a lot out of a gym, but American Athlete has it all. Ive worked out hard my entire life and have a hard time finding things that challenge me, but their classes actually provide an excellent variety and can challenge just about any level. To top it off Ive met a lot of great people and always feel like I belong.

Compared to every club Ive been to recently, this place needs some serious work. Sure, they have weights, but the cardio equipment looks to be about 10 years old. They have none of the newer cardio equipment that most gyms have gotten--Ballard Health Club, Olympic Athletic Club, all have much better facilities at a comparable price. $55 a month is way too much for what they offer here.

American Athlete is a great facility, conveniently located in Greenlake, with excellent equipment, numerous classes/programs, and experienced personal trainers serving the young to the not-so-young. They also honor the national "Silver Sneakers" program. Its a local business with helpful and capable staff, and a super place to work out. I already recommend it to all my friends.

While it might be s simple gym it has everything youd need to get your workout on. Including no attitude. And great staff. Especially the trainers and I highly recommend him if you can get home. Great gym and knows how to get your body in shape and still have a smile on your face. Just go ahead and make an appointment to try both the gym and him out. You wont regret it.

Old equipment and no TVs. I have to be here next two months bcoz I got late by 2 days in cancelling my monthly membership. BTW, you can join anytime, they can prorate you but even if you tell a day late, you cant leave. If you live near green lake, try gold gym on Aurora. Latest equipment and very clean and almost half the price.

The new owner has done a great job! I like the new machines and floor plan, as well as the re-branding. I have been coming to this gym (when it was Andersons and then American Athlete) for 18 years and so appreciate and value the incredible community of fellow gym-goers. The staff are wonderful too.

Convenient location if you live in the area, but far too expensive for old equipment. Like any gym the crowd varies but there are a few regulars that youll want to avoid as management is permissive of their unpleasant habits and behaviors.

This place is great, i have been a member of many gyms but the staff here is awesome. They never try to hard sell you on anything like other gyms. Their hours are flexible and classes are fun. T

This may be best gym in the city for the discerning adult. Good value, ideal location, earnest staff. A gem. Not for the TV crowd.
