I felt like I owed one to Courtesy Auto Service after my superb experience with the shop. I am the owner of a 99 VW Passat that began having valve chatter around 112,000 miles right after my drive up to Madison from New Mexico. I knew right off the bat what that meant --> my timing belts and/or pulleys were saying their last prayers (never replaced, well beyond their service lifetime)! Doing some homework on the Internet lead me two places. First it told me that if I did not fix my timing belts at regular service intervals they would shred to pieces, causing my interference fit engines valves to come smashing and crashing into the pistons bending everything into complete and totally unserviceable mess. Second it lead me to Courtesy Auto. I pulled the trigger and took a chance with this shop as I did not know but a few people in Madison, none of whom had been here (or ever owned a VW). Dave was able to sneak me in on a last minute canceled appoint. I was eternally grateful to find out that every part of this service project was on the shelf and quoted significantly lower than dealership price. The service was performed on time as I was told and I was on the road the next day (an amazing feat considering the service position my car has to be put in to even get access to the belts). All I can really say is THESE GUYS KNOW YOUR VOLKSWAGEN IN AND OUT! I have made 4 trips back and forth to Chicago from Madison and 1 trip back to New Mexico then back to Madison since the service had been performed. My vehicle is STILL running tops. This alone speaks volumes for the value and greatness of this shop. These guys are supremely knowledgeable with the skill to back it up. Dont take your Volkswagen anywhere else!

A couple weeks ago I had my VW dying on me after a few minutes of driving, running shorter and shorter each time. My friend ran the scanner and narrowed it down to the fuel system, so he changed the fuel filter and put in some newer fuel injectors from the junkyard, without success, so we had essentially narrowed it down to the fuel pump. I went to Courtesy and explained the situation, and the guy there played dumb as to whether it was the fuel pump, instead asking me if was was willing to put potentially $1000 into repairs (rather than telling me what might be wrong and an estimate on cost) and that they couldnt fit me in for 2-3 weeks anyway. So I went to On-The-Road Auto where they immediately said my assessment was probably right and got me in right away, and I had my car fixed 3 days later (it was the fuel pump). So I cant comment on how good Courtesy is at doing repairs, all I can say is that they werent very courteous and I got the feeling they just wanted to gouge me.

Dave is the absolute best and most honest mechanic around. When I bought my 12 year old Jetta, I took it to him for my first oil change and he looked over the whole car for me at no extra charge. After that I continued to take my Jetta back to him for everything from oil changes to coolant system issues and tire rotations. He was always honest, stayed true to his quotes, explained everything to me and was willing to answer any and all questions. He never once treated me "like a girl" and I never felt like I was being taken advantage of. I didnt realize just what a gem Courtesy Auto was until I moved out of state and have had to deal with a dishonest mechanic who has left me with a broken car that cost a lot of money. If I could, I would have my car towed back to Dave so he could make it right!

Took our Passat to Courtesy with a sporadic starting issue and check engine light (engine would crank, but wouldnt turn over). Left the car for a day, and when I picked up, was told defensively that the car started fine and they couldnt figure out the problem. I wasnt charged, but the car was also still broken. Drove the car to Zimbrick a day later and received a diagnosis only a couple of hours after drop-off. Vacuum problems. No biggie though, Zimbrick had the car ready to go the following day and even washed it. Does Zimbrick charge more? Probably, but Im fine with that since time and knowledgeable mechanics are valuable. Ill also add that "Courtesy" Auto is a laughable misnomer. I only had one encounter, but courtesy wasnt exactly overflowing at this place.

We recently took my VW Beetle to Dave at Courtesy Auto on recommendation of some local mechanics (and after reading several reviews online). We were very impressed with the service and greatly relieved to find an honest and helpful VW mechanic in Madison. While Dave could easily have charged us a lot of money for a battery of tests, instead he told us honestly that he could not find any problem and would prefer we monitor the situation until were sure there really is a problem. For the tests he did conduct, he charged us less than he had quoted. We are happy to have found a competent and honest VW specialist in Madison and recommend Courtesy to any VW owners in the area. Oh, and yes, Dave does have a sense of humor!

Wow! VW owners, dont take your vehicle anywhere else! I drove from IL to WI for my timing belt service because of the great reviews and lower prices from this shop. I couldnt have been happier with my experience from start to finish. They are VERY knowledgeable about VW and TDI cars and it showed. All my repair work was performed as promised and in a timely fashion. I loved the text notification when the vehicle was finished and they had no problem coordinating my out of state commute with dropping off and picking up my vehicle. I could not ask for a better all around experience and plan on making the trip any time in the future I need major service done. Thank you!

The most Honest repair man I know in Madison. I had my VW beetle in need of fixing its automatic window and side mirror. Dave recommended a great website for finding used parts for the side mirror and told me he would be able to fix it when I brought it in. When he fixed it he was extremely reasonable on price, and the repair looked great! He said they had a lot of extra work bud did not charge me any more for labor that originally quoted. Plus his quote was considerably less than any of the other repair shops I went to. If youre not sure where to take your car you need to check this place out.

Dave of Courtesy saved me a thousand dollars last year. At the time we owned two early decade VW Jettas. Two or three times the dealer had given me a list of necessary repairs during their free oil change inspection. I took that information to Dave and he was consistently able to cut the cost by 40%. He did this by not being aggressive with part replacement, and replacing only hoses that were actually worn. He was also able to actually repair a part that the dealer would have replaced. He also charges a more reasonable rate. Highly recommend to any VW owner.
