The counter service at the Main Alameda post office is mediocre to poor. Whenever Ive gone there, there is 10-12 customers waiting in line but only two and sometimes only one clerk servicing them. They have only one speed, SLOW! Today, 02-09-09 @ 1015, I waited while two clerks worked for 10 minutes, then one clerk worked for @ 10 minutes, then back to two for 10 minutes, then back to one for an extended period of time, then two again. When I finally got to the counter I was informed that she couldnt make change and I must pay by check, money order, debit/credit card (only). I inquired as to why she didnt have change and she answered, "They didnt give me any." So I posted a pkg for my Grandson, Priority mail with Delivery Confirmation. As I paid, by debit card, I noticed she didnt apply the Priority Mail tape to the pkg. I asked about it and her response was that shed do it later. Now wait a minute! Shes too busy to get change for making cash transactions, theres now a longer line of folks waiting, and Im supposed to believe that shell apply the required Priority Mail tape later? I dont have confidence that shell even remember or that she even cares. So I decide to register a c/o with a Supervisor. The Supervisor listens to my duel complaint, with the expression of, "Yeah, right! O.K., Ill take care of it." As I turn to leave, theres a Postal Cop standing behind me, and as I tell the Supv., "Thank you", he leaves. So I guess he was there in case this "old man" decides to make trouble. REALLY! WELL, I WONT PATRONIZE THIS P.O. ANYMORE. Ill go to Redwood Square or the Coast Guard Base where the service is much better.

I just had a very bad experience here. I was mailing a letter internationally, so after waiting for 15 minutes in a long line and getting up to the counter, the woman who sees me tells me to fill out a form for my parcel. I go do this, and after getting back to the counter I am helped by an older man. As soon as he sees the destination of my parcel, he says, "Thats going to be expensive" and shakes his head. Yes, it is an international parcel. International parcels are expensive. And, shouldnt you be happy that people are spending money to send things internationally, as you work for the post office? He doesnt look at me or talk to me, and then tells me how much my parcel will be and sticks a sticker on it. I ask him, "How much will it be with the express mail option?" He just shakes his head again and says, "Pretty expensive, for what youre sending." Wow. "I just want to make sure it gets there quickly. Could you look into how much it will cost?" He looked into the price and told me, and I said that I wanted the express option. "Okay, then were going to have to do this all over again," he said as he ripped the original form I had filled out in two and threw it away, handing me another form to fill out. Neither he nor the original woman that I had talked to had told me there were different international forms; the woman had assumed that I wanted the cheapest one and the man hadnt told me that I would need to take even more time filling out another one and waiting even longer. Overall very bad service, I will not go here again.

Its a shame Google lumps the work "Fair" in with the lowest option. I will go out of my way, pay more money, drive farther, whatever, to avoid having to walk inside that building. I will even buy product from one seller over another just because they use UPS or FedEx and NOT USPS. It is guaranteed that if something ships to my house USPS, i wont be home to receive it, then i have to go to that god forsaken building and wait in the ever present line while 2 emotionless grumpy people barely help customers. They close at 5:30pm Tues-Fri. I pulled in there at 5:25pm along with another older lady. We both were walking up to the door at the same time. As we are approaching the door, the manager walks up from the inside and locks the door in our faces... then just points to the other door around the corner of the building... Are you kidding me? He literally shut the door in an 75 year old womans face. That perfectly sums up the level of excitement, customer service and friendliness you will receive at this branch. Maybe I am jaded now and am getting bad service because I expect it... Whatever. All I know is, this building makes me feel zero sympathy for the fact that the Fed is trying to shut down the USPS and privatize it. Im perfectly happy using UPS or FedEx and paying $1.50 rather than a $.55 stamp to mail that few and far between letter to my pen-pal. Its a shame.

I gave one star for their smiling, jovial, kind caring personalities. Behind the smiling facade are no problem-solving skills or genuine help. The only person I will mention by name, who is the crown jewel of Alameda Post Office, is Hank the mail carrier. He is an incredible, thoughtful and kind carrier who has tried to help me find my missing mail of..dare I say...3 MONTHS! The customer service phone line is a joke too! Try it for yourself! You will be put on hold indefinitely by an unhappy person who does not care for his job or people! It is now 11:09 am, I will now hang up the phone after waiting to speak with Dan Sousa (WHO I found out from Pete is out of the office,/Janet, his relief never came to the phone. I will email and hopefully get some resolution from USPS in Washington.. I started the call at 10 a.m, a postal worker picked up the phone, grunted some kind of acknowledgement and put me on hold At 10:12 am Pete, a maintenance staff member spoke with me and told me to hold, Ive been on hold ever since! The proof of such slothful and inept customer service, and that you indeed have to physically go into the office, and in my case...nothing was ever resolved! My missing mail of 3 MONTHS continues to exist somewhere in the global ether.

Betty- Aug 30, 2011 I just put my mail in the mail slot less than 1 minute, then I realized I forgot to complete the form and went back to talk to the clerk I need to retrieve a mail I just dropped of minute ago. The clerk did not even looked me in to my eye and said, "It will cost you $ 25.00, go to the other side of the office and ask someone." I went to other side of the office and the guy asks, "They sent you here"? Their customer service is graded "F". Then I went back outside waited additional 25 minutes to get to the counter. I ask the clerk, I just put the mail in the box ...and she said you need to bla..bla..bla.. and pay $25.00, then she went to the back for 5 minutes and came back said we will give you a call, they will not try to find it right the way. They have wasted 40 minutes and tell me to leave without trying to find my mail. I went back home and received a call said they CAN NOT find my letter and they put a lot of effort in to it. I have wasted $ 25.00 and 45 minutes and got this horrible service. I told myself, from now on I will try my best to tell all my friends and people that I know to avoid use the postal service. They do not deserve to be in business.
