Ha! Hao Zhangs comment is spot on! I frequented this coffee store way before it was owned by the Australian manager/ owner. I also frequent the library in the area and have always found the PREVIOUS owners/baristas to be very personable. I have encountered a similar experience. I am an Asian male in my twenties. I am half white and half Asian with my Asian ethnicity being more prominent. Like Hao Zhang, I entered the store and the Australian owner served me coffee. I was very personable from the get-go as I am when I speak to baristas (its a difficult job FYI). But as this man served me, his face did not even change or return a smile as I spoke to him in a friendly manner (I ordered the coffee with the spicy salt). He spoke and I knew immediately he was Australian (I have lived in Hong Kong for a few years, and I have worked with a few Australians in my life). At the back of my mind, I was thinking to myself "Hes having a bad day. Its not because of my ethnicity. I am sure he has been exposed to other ethnicities before. I am sure what I have experienced in the past does not apply in this situation." I said this to myself because I have met Australians who are very racist and prejudiced towards people of Asian descent. I have worked with and gone to school with Australians who have been explicitly and implicitly prejudiced towards people of Asian descent. And yes: racism is very prevalent and highly documented in Australia. As I took my coffee and sat in the indoor patio right in front of the coffee store, a couple of white customers entered the coffee room. They were personable! Not over the top. But personable. The owner/managers disposition changed! He was nice; he smiled; he was chatty. He even told them where he was from and that he now runs the place. (The managers response to Hao Zhang about not being to accustomed to American greetings is invalid here; dude, I saw your face shift in disposition and character the minute those white Americans spoke to you). I am completing my PHD at UCLA in the psychology department. This is a classic case of implicit bias, subtle racism. To the Australian owner of this coffee store, I forgive you. But welcome to America: institutional racism exists. You dont need to add to it. (I give the coffee store 2 stars because the coffee with the salt I bought did not leave a bad taste in my mouth) Edit / addendum: Im leaving constructive comments below -- When dealing with customers, treat people with equal worth and dignity. People who are wearing suits and ties or nice blazers dont deserve better treatment than people who are wearing hoodies and jeans. In LA, you never know who youre serving coffee to. And plus, its a nice word of wisdom to live by. There are a couple of baristas in this coffee store, both female, who Ive noticed have done just that. Brava to you, ladies.

Very bad experience at this place. Have been there for a few times. Dont think Ill ever go back again. This guy, probably the manager or owner of this place since I saw him there almost every time, sounds like an Australian or New Zealander. From the very first time I bought coffee from him, he got a cold face and bad attitude. But strangely, hes always super friendly and talkative to every white-looking customer before or after me. I have lived in LA for more than 5 years, and seriously this is the only place, and the only person I ever met that gave me the suspicion of racism in this huge city. Just got a drink there again this afternoon before I stepped into Weho library. I was hoping hes not there, but unfortunately he was! Again, absolutely no greeting or smile at all, and didnt even bother with saying "Hi" after I said "Hello". Wonder why I even included $1 tip to my order. I must be nuts! After I got my drink, I had to look for the plastic cap since they were all gone on the bar. I asked for his help, and you know whats his response? "Open the cabinet under the bar, and the caps should be there." Are you seriously?! Is this a coffee shop or someones kitchen? The customer is expected to open the cabinet to get the stuff by himself? OK, I opened the cabinet eventually, and its a mess inside! Finally I was able to find a cap inside, meanwhile, he apparently had the least interest in helping me. Once again, will never go there again unless the guy disappears!

I highly recommend Longshot Coffee for your mobile coffee needs. I stumbled upon them when I was in a rush to find a mobile barista for two corporate events in one week. Not only were they available on such short notice but they provided awesome service! They were on time, full equipped, friendly and brewed up some delicious coffee. Everyone at the event spoke very highly of their espresso beverages. The process was seamless from booking to payment. I highly recommend Longshot for any of your events.

Longshot Coffee grinds my beans the right way. Plus, that Aussie Mark guy and that John dude who work there are always so friendly to people. A+, mates. Keep up the good work. But, it would be nice if you played a little bit more Billy Joel in the café.
