I wouldnt rate this place a 1-star. Theyre not bad. Not the greatest either, but not horrible. Yes, in the winter its impossible to get into your storage unless you finish shoveling out your door before the snow turns into ice. Contrary to popular belief, they DO plow out the roads between all units, but they DONT get out of the plow to personally shovel out your door. After a snow I would expect about a half-foot-wide swath of snow to be between the road and my door. Yes, also the melting snow would get under the door and flood it (thats what melting snow typically does), thats why most storage places tell you to use pallets or some other system to keep your boxes and valuables off the floor. Since I kept everything important off the floor, I had no problems. And the water was never deep -- a 1/4 inch at the most. Yes, Ive rented from a place that didnt have flooding issues, but that place was clear out near the interstate. For the price and the location, I would rent from this place again.

DO NOT RENT A STORAGE UNIT FROM AMES SOUTHSIDE STORAGE!!! They are one of the worst run companies I have worked with in Ames. Their units are all-weather however our unit flooded, ruining most of the boxes. Our units door froze shut during the winter because Southside Storage did not plow or maintain their units. After spending hours calling their office and trying to shovel out our door I received no response and had to call them multiple days in a row requesting them to resolve the issue. They do not pay attention when you call and if you call multiple days in a row they have no knowledge about what anyone else in their company has done or said. I will never rent from this company again and I would be very wary about doing business with any of the companies run by or associated with the Schill family.

We have had a 10x10 unit for 4 months now. Their prices are inline with the others in the area, but the deposit was lower. We have not had any problems with mice or rain. Seems to be a good value and well maintained.
