The mechanics at Mallek provided excellent service for the jobs they did, but their communication could really use some work. If you use them I strongly recommend being as clear as possible with what you want done, make sure they write everything down, and follow up that things were actually done. Back story: I have a car with ~90k miles that doesnt get driven much these days. Brought it in to get the brake pads and rotors replaced, oil change, along with a general checkup since its been sitting idle for a while. They confirmed the pads and rotors needed replacing and also that one of the rear wheel bearings needed replacing. Scheduled an appointment for the following week to bring the car back to do the work. The pads and rotors were done well and fast. We even had a set of new rotors that they were happy to use (purchased a while back but never used), so bonus points to Mallek for that. But there was some confusion over the wheel bearing... it was fixed, but on the invoice it was reported as one of the front bearings (a much bigger and more expensive job). Not a huge deal, but accurate service records are important. The big communication issue was over the oil change. As long as its on the lift lets get that done too... I asked, they wrote it down and said they would do it... and they didnt do it. It wasnt on the invoice when I picked up the car and the person at the shop wasnt able to answer me when I asked about it (folks minding the shop at the end of the day are NOT mechanics that do the work, and theyre not well-informed about the work the mechanics did that day, so theyre not helpful in answering questions beyond what the invoice says and taking money). I called the next day to see if an oil change happened. After a couple minutes on hold I got the response: "we forgot". Thats it... no offer to bring it back in and do ALL of the work I asked for. I ended up getting the oil changed elsewhere that specializes in that sort of thing, to make sure it actually got done. So ultimately while I was happy with the actual work Mallek did it was always a little muddy what work they were going to do / actually did, and basic things I asked for simply didnt get done. If you decide to go with Mallek for anything be SUPER CLEAR about what you want done, make sure they write it down, and verify after the fact what actually ended up getting done.

If you are of a certain age (like me), you remember when the corner gas station was the trusted place to take your car for service. You knew the mechanics by name and they knew your cars ideosyncracies. Malleks is that place. We had heard of Malleks but we took our cars to the dealer for service. We had the dealer fix an ignition problem, and week later got stranded downtown, double parked, unable to start the car--or take the key out of the ignition. The tow truck driver wanted to know where we wanted to take our car, and since we felt the dealer had made our prior problem worse, we asked for a recommendation. The driver gave all sorts of disclaimers about not steering business (his tow truck was from another shop across town), but said if it were HIS car, hed take it to Malleks. We did, and we have been fans ever since. I can think of three or four times Ive come in to Malleks with what I thought would be a $100 repair, only to have John or Ron tell us it was fixed--and there was no charge. Ive brought a battery in mid-winter, and theyve turned it around in a few hours with a smile & a "thank you for thinking of us," and again, only a nominal charge if any. I had an ancient Subaru that had work done on it by a tribe of backyard mechanics. Rather than get in over their heads on somebody elses major screw up, they sent me to the best Subaru mechanic around, where my bu was put right. What I guess Im saying is, Malleks Service is all about trust. It takes a little while sometimes to get an appointment, because Ann Arbors "little secret" is really not so much a secret. These guys do good work.

A friend of mine had a car that wouldn’t start at intermittent times. She took it to a dealership and they charged her $150 to fix it. She still had the problem so she called the dealership and they told her they were sure they knew what the problem was and it would only cost an additional few hundred $’s. She was suspicious, so she took her car to Mallek’s for a second opinion. Mallek’s found the problem and fixed it for less than $20. She never had the problem again. Her story sold me and I have been taking my vehicles to Mallek’s for over 20 years. I absolutely agree with the first reviewer “Honest, competent work …”. Mallek’s forte is American made vehicles. They will do what they can for your European and Asian made vehicles; such as oil and spark plug changes, tune-ups. They are popular and busy so you will need to call and schedule a few days ahead. Be sure to tell John, Ron, Ross, Alan, and Danny that Robin says Hi.

They have been taking care of my familys cars for over 20 years now. Its hard to find great, honest mechanics but they do exist. You will be treated like a family member and you will never be advised to do anything unnecessary. Its the only place in town that still has free air by the way, shame on everybody else. John, Ron the rest of the crew can often be seen helping the elderly get gas and they will even help you check your tires and oil if you like. I really cant say enough good things about the people and the business. Dont waste your time and money going anywhere else.

John (proprietor and mechanic) and Dan (mechanic) are great! Very honest! Dan will often help out and not even charge. When the nearby car dealership service tells us some big expensive repair is needed, Dan will come up with free alternatives. I am very impressed. (My only fear in writing a good review is that if they become too popular, I will eventually have to wait for service :-) ). It is so worthwhile to have a place you can trust!!! I now often go in without doing any price comparisons because I know I will be treated right! Thank you guys!

Honest, competent work from mechanics that have my best interests at heart and will keep my aging woman-owned vehicle running with as few repairs at the least cost while still ensuring the safety of my vehicle. So many times I have taken my car in and John has given me his opinion about whether I absolutely need to make a repair or whether I can wait and eke a little more life out of what Ive got. My only complaint is that they are so popular that I often have to wait a few days for them to fit me in.

Its like having a good family friend who happens to be a mechanic. The folks at Mallek Service have a very well earned reputation for being a great auto shop with rock solid ethics. Theyve always done great repairs for a really competitive price. We wont take our cars anywhere else.
