I signed up for a seven day trial on the Matrix website. I received a call from Allison who demanded I provide a time frame as to when I would come in for a walk through. I advised Allison I was unable to predict when I would be out of work that day and that I would be in sometime before the gym closed. Allison kept pressing for a specific time. I, again, advised this person I would be in some time before gym closed. Allison asked “why I had an attitude”. I advised this person there was no “attitude” on my part and asked if there was anyone else that could provide a walk through when I was able to come in. Allison stated “I am the only one who can help you” and “we do not need your business”. I advised Allison to provide the name of the gym’s manager. She stated she was the gym’s overall manager. I asked for the owner’s information. Allison hung up. I called the gym’s main line and was connected with Sierra. I asked to speak with the gym’s manager and was told the only “manager” available was Allison. I asked if Allison was the overall gym manager and I was told no, there are three overall gym managers above Allison. I asked for their direct contact information and was transferred to Allison. I advised Allison I knew she was not the gym’s manager as she claimed and that I wanted her boss’ contact info. She stated “you need to stop calling here” and hung up again. I don’t know what is more brainless – an employee who lies about their position and refuses potential business for an unwarranted reason or a business who hires an imbecile like Allison. The owner of this gym can feel free to contact me at any time.

What a terrible experience. I moved to Chicago about two weeks ago and called Matrix in order to cancel my membership. I had a copy of my lease that I offered to email to Allison but she refused it. She claimed only a utility bill was acceptable. Since I moved into my new apartment two weeks ago, it would be impossible to have a utility bill at this point and I didnt want to continue paying for a gym membership that is impossible for me to use. I was shocked and angered by Allisons refusal to accept my lease. I have been a member of NY Sports Club, Planet Fitness and few other gyms and I have never had such a hard time canceling a membership. I could not believe that I had to continue paying for this membership, while living in Chicago, until a month goes by and I get sent a utility bill. I told Allison I would be writing a review based on my experience and at that point, things became bizarre as she refused to let me off the phone, continuing to talk whenever I said I was hanging up. She started saying completely inappropriate things like "why do you have an attitude? and "You used to be so nice when you came to the gym, whats happened to you?". I have been face to face with this woman once in my life and was extremely unsettled and annoyed with how she had begun talking to me like I was her daughter. Its in your best interest to avoid Allison and this gym.

The first gym Ive ever paid for (that wasnt Planet Fitness). Plenty of machines, pretty friendly environment between the staff and the guests. I also caught the negative reviews on here about people trying to leave and having issues, so I wanted to add my experience in here. You have to give a 30-day notice, and I am moving gyms to be closer to my new job, so I went in and let them know today. I spoke with Jerry, who was super nice about everything and said that - if I change my mind within 60 days after leaving - that I can come back without paying the sign up price again. He also let me know about a few additional options and benefits about sticking with Matrix (i.e. having health insurance pay for the gym) without being an overbearing salesperson about it. Most of the staff is nice, but if you want to have a real conversation about stuff at the gym, go to Jerry. Hes awesome and has apparently been there for 18 years.

I joined the gym after speaking at length with a woman named Carrie. I was interested in a month to month membership that would not be automatically billed. After going to the gym for 2 weeks I took a long scheduled vacation and put my membership on hold. Upon my return I was billed for an additional month. At this point I had not reinstated my membership and did not think I was under contract for automatic billing as this was what was discussed with Carrie. I feel that the gym mislead me into joining and fraudulently charged my credit card for additional months. I am greatly disappointed with Carrie and the staff at Matrix Gym. My advice is to be careful when signing the contract as they may verbally make promises that are not established within the contract as was the case with my membership.

Ive gone to this gym for a just about a year now. Ive had a good overall experience. The facility is clean and the equipment is update to date but the free available parking is what will make me renew. If i build up the motivation to go work out the last thing I want to do is worry about parking. The one thing that hurts the gym is their closing times. Sometimes id like to workout late on a weekend but theyre shutting down by 8.

Expensive but well equipped gym. Upside: good equipment, a little older but all in great repair, juice bar is good, staff is knowledgeable, not a huge space, but I didnt wait for any equipment. Downside: Price, Im admittedly cheap, but it was a notably monthly, that they of course dont tell you online. Working out underground is sometimes weird and feels a little awkward.

Matrix is my new gym and I love it. It is somehow always busy but never crowded, no matter if I go first thing in the morning or after work. The staff all seem happy to be at work and the clientele doesnt play around. The spin classes are really challenging and model the same ethos as some of the pricer boutique spinning studios in the city. But for much, much, cheaper.

Fantastic Yoga classes, look for Julie on the schedule. Also quiet, private parking, not as bro-ey or intimidating as any other gym in the area. Friendly, knowledge staff, never crowded, great diverse equipment, tons of snacks and supplements, clean locker room (at least the Mens is, Ive never seen the womens ;-)

I have been a member of many chain and specialty gyms in NYC. This is a clean facility with free parking and up-to-date equipment. Though, there is only one location--the staff is friendly, the trainers knowlegeable, and the price is right! Highly recommended!

This Gym will not let you cancel. They will send you to collections even if you move. Why does a Gym need your social security number your only working out. If you go to this gym pay in full for the year and do not sign anything.
