So I went to Impact Jiu Jitsu on 7/6/2012 at 6pm to attend the boxing class. The Gym is ok as far as gyms go. The instructor is this young 25ish guy who starts the class in his pajama bottoms and a t shirt? We have a few instructions about bag work and various drills and we are off. The class progresses in a pretty smooth way to music mostly inappropriate to work out to (slow beat and such) and half way through class we start sparring. This big guy walks back to where the class is being conducted and says nothing but just sits in the back of the room and watches like some kind of lurker or something. The sparring is the worst Ive ever experienced besides perhaps you and a few buddies putting on gloves and going at it, which coincidentally, this basically was. The instructor "sparred" a couple of rounds and when I say "sparred" I mean he fought with his hands down basically showing off his superior skill in a macho guy kinda way. When I was up he toyed with me like the other four guys of less skill and experience and ended me the way 2 others had ended their sessions with a leaking nose. If I learned one this its I need more training from a Real instructor who cares about his students and not his foolish pride.

Professional & Friendly. 1.5 years ago I came into Impact as an overweight, middle-aged man, lacking any experience. Immediately, I was impressed by the size and cleanliness of the facility and the friendly, professional staff (who are all accomplished martial artists). Although Impact does field professional fighters (to include training UFC athletes), I have never once felt that my needs as an enthusiast have been ignored. In fact, the coaching staff and the belted athletes have consistently gone out of their way to make me feel like a valued member of the Impact family. Impact fosters a culture of support, collaboration of respect without exception. Since joining, I have lost more than 50 lbs. (I received a ton of professional advice and support from Impact’s coaches and the Impact Performance Training staff along the way). I’ve competed in a BJJ tournament (which I never thought I could do), and I have made some great, new friends who consistently challenge me to be my best. Impacts reputation as Portlands #1 BJJ/MMA school is, without a doubt, well-deserved!

I had the great pleasure of participating at Impact JJs open mat on Saturdays from 12-2 recently. It can sometimes be intimidating to go into another BJJ academy alone for various reasons, but if only for the reason of not knowing what to expect from individuals within that academy. Impact JJ, however, fosters an environment where anybody can train safely yet get a good challenge from all people on the mat. I was able to roll with a number of different guys, and everybody had a good skillset, and with the number of higher-level people that Impact has, those that are just starting out will have a good chance to learn and get better at a steep learning curve, which is one of the most important attributes that an academy can have. I can see myself coming back and dropping in whenever Im back in town. Impact JJ is a great outfit.

What you see is what you get. No extra fees or pressure contract sales. I chose this school after a very thorough Portland area search for a quality martial arts school. I am a former school owner and a black belt in another system of self defense. I wasnt sure about the transition into grappling but couldnt resist the feel of a traditional martial arts school minus all the crap that comes with it. As a female athlete I have never felt so empowered to succeed. Sexism is never supported by staff and the ladies here are always supportive not catty. I dont have to force myself to go to the gym, I want to be there along with everyone else. I weighed 189 when I signed up 3 years ago, I weigh 129 now..... enough said.

Impact was my home gym for nearly 5 years, and it was not until I had to move that it became clear how outstanding the gym really is. Tracy and Michael Chapman have created a deep and diverse family of mixed martial artists and jiu jitsu players. The morning classes with Rodney were a comfortable and casual atmosphere for learning. Noon classes and Saturdays with Armand were technical mastery. Kickboxing with Nuro and Shawn provided a solid foundation in striking. I highly recommend the Impact gyms to beginners and the proficient alike.

I had the pleasure of training at Impact off and on for a couple of years around 2009-2011. Michael Chapman is an incredibly genuine and good instructor and has years of experience in numerous martial arts. The other instructors are also all top notch as well. Most importantly, the vibe at Impact is both competitive but incredibly nice. Everyone there is always open for conversation and always seemed to have a smile on their face. It was a great place to train, and I cant wait to stop back in one day.

If you are looking for someplace to train BJJ in the Portland area, Impact is definitely the place to go. The folks there are seriously skilled and vibe is very cool. All of the coaches are top notch and you will find some absolute monsters on the mat without all the attitude you can find other schools. I train at a school in another city, but make a point to train at Impact whenever I can. I highly recommend checking it out.

The coaching is very in-depth and practical. With a handful of black belts, Impact has a very, very high concentration of grappling knowledge. The atmosphere is my favorite, though. Very friendly and open to everyone. You dont have to be a superstar to spend time at the gym. The people are laid back and a lot of fun to be around. Ive been training with Impact for a year and a half now, and I love it!

If you want to learn Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, this is the place to learn it. Top notch coaches who are black belts with a tremendous amount of knowledge. In my almost 3 years there, I love the leave the ego at the door mentality there. Great training partners and an awesome atmosphere for learning and fun. Impact Jiu Jitsu is more than gym a to me, its a community.

Ive been training at Impact for a few years. Its a great place to learn martial arts. However, the people there are what make the gym special. It is a family friendly environment. Everyone there supports each other and pushes each other, both in martial arts training as well in life. Its a great community to be a part of.

I had the pleasure of stopping into Impact on my way down to LA with the wife. Everyone at the club was friendly and welcoming. On top of that the technical prowess, and open atmosphere makes for great training. I would highly recommend anyone looking for a great place to train BJJ check this place out.
