Keratin Treatment Review - This was the first time I had a keratin treatment, and I know there are mixed reviews around the effectiveness of this procedure. On some people it works while others it doesnt. On me it really didnt make any difference, and wanted to go over my experience at Jose Luis Salon. For reference I have long course wavy/frizzy hair and it takes me about 20min to blow dry and another 20 to smooth my hair with an iron. JLS uses the GK Hair Professional product, which I have now learned is the more gentler product on the market. When I arrived, the stylist first combed through my hair while we discussed my morning routine. Next the stylist shampooed my hair twice and rinsed, this took about 10minutes. Back at the chair, my hair was divided into sections (no combing), while the stylist applied GK product on each section working from nape of neck to the top of my head. Application took about 15 minutes. Then, the stylist let my hair sit for an additional 15 minutes without any covering and I didnt feel like there was any smell or stinginess on my scalp. Then the stylist came back to blow dry my hair, running fingers until my hair was dry. The stylist then straightened my hair pin straight, working again from nape of neck to top of head - this was the most time consuming part of about 1hr. I have a lot of hair and know this was hard work. We had not discussed how the hair should look, and was a little scared seeing it pin straight. When the stylist finished, they kept emphasizing how this is how my hair would look the next time I dry my hair (must have said it about four times). Then the stylist walked me over to the shampoos/conditioner and grabbed the GK brand for dyed/colored hair saying it did not make a difference that my hair was not dyed. At checkout the stylist said not to wash hair for 48-72 hours. Fast forward 72 hours, after first time washing my hair it had dried wavy and frizzy again. It still takes the same amount of time to dry and flat iron my hair, no difference seen at all. Now looking into instructions on GK website I found that course hair should have been left on for 60min for my hair type. I dont know if (a) the stylist did not follow directions from product manufacturers, (b) the gentler GK keratin product is ineffective at my hair type, or (c) maybe keratin treatments do not work on me... but I will not get this treatment done again at this salon. I agree with other reviewers that it is a friendly staff with a nice atmosphere. I have my haircuts here regularly by a different stylist and have always been happy with the cut. Just wanted to pass along my experience on the keratin treatment.

I went to Jose Luis Salon for about two years (and recently started going to Wild Orchid Salon instead to follow my stylist) and it was always an absolutely amazing experience all thanks to my hairstylist Jessica Chapman (now at Wild Orchid Salon, check her out!)! I heard of Jose Luis Salon from one of my friends and, at that point, I was about to make a drastic change in my hair by cutting about 8 inches off. I wanted a hairstylist that knew exactly what they were doing and I was recommended to see Jessica. Upon arriving to the salon, I was thoroughly impressed. Its a great location (with parking!), the layout/design of the salon is beautiful, and they provide complimentary drinks and mini-snacks. The staff at the front desk is always really nice and my appointments have always started on time. However, visiting my hairstylist, Jessica Chapman, is what makes the trip so wonderful! Jessica pays so much attention to detail when cutting hair and always does everything to perfection! Ive never left unhappy or even just satisfied since the haircut always surpasses my expectations. She always knows exactly what I want and I know Im in good hands when she cuts my hair. Shes so meticulous when cutting hair and you can tell she really cares about how it turns out and puts so much hard work into the process. I know its usually hard for people, myself included, to trust people when cutting hair since once its chopped off, its gone. However, each time I visit Jessica I can practically close my eyes and leave with an amazing haircut and blow-out. The very first time I visited her I cut about 8 inches off and wanted to take my long hair and replace it with a short, relatively blunt cut. Now I cant get enough of it! If youre in need of a stylist of want to try someone new, I would definitely recommend visiting her, but everyone else at the salon is also great! Its definitely worth it :)

I cant say enough good things about Jose Luis Salon and their staff but my favorite stylist is Abel Salazar. I have followed Abel from salon to salon and he has made a home at Jose Luis. He has spent the longest time that I have known him here. Abel specializes in red curly hair which those of us who have this combination know is hard to find. I always get compliments after seeing Abel but the entire staff is great they have a wonderful esthetician Linda Hinkley. They have great jewelry for sale and makeup. The staff doesnt try to make you buy hair products but if you want them they have them. A lot of salons make you feel like a number and how fast they can get you in and out. Jose Luis is an experience - you can spend the whole day there if you wanted. They will bring you lunch from next door, there are cookies, and you can have a glass of wine if you need one. I recommend them to everyone I meet and to everyone who compliments my hair which is a lot of people.

I was uncomfortable the moment I walked into this salon. Im Hispanic and I was ready to spend some money on my hair. Lets begin. Everyone was drinking wine and I was only offered soda or water. After discussing that I didnt want ombre I actually wanted balyage after pointing out a few pictures and saying the words, "I want that. Lets do that." I still got a hideous ombre. Yup. After 4 hours of foils and heaters on my head, my hair was orange and ugly. The cut was awful too! I asked for layers and a few inches off. I got a short blunt boring cut. My hair was beautiful, long and dark. I was absolutely ruined. I felt stared at the entire time. Almost in a "you dont belong here" or "you dont fit in" manner. Latinas with beautiful long dark hair DONT GO HERE. I figured hey, its called Jose Luis, Im Latina and I have money. I should try this place out. WRONG.

If you are looking for a stylist in Austin that not only knows how to cut hair but can direct you to a new look then you must give Jessica at Jose Luis Salon a try! I was a bit intimidated being male and going to a hair salon downtown but Jose Luis came highly recommended through a friend and I decided I had to give them a try. Everyone has a smile and seemed to be happy to be there. Jessica was extremely charming and took great care of me. The salon is very airy and open with easy access from Mopac to park. If you current stylist is not getting the results you are looking for you should give them a shot!
