I began my martial arts journey about 6 months ago at a rather stiff, sat-behind-a-desk-for-over-20-years age of 46. One of the first things my teacher said to me is If I can do it, you can do it because he also started about the same age and is now a black belt teaching me. The lineage of this school, from the ancient Chinese founders to Sifu Alschbach and the various black belt instructors (younger & older) is a key source of pride, respect and education where both the student and the instructor continue growing together. Shaolin Kung Fu is a great physical exercise routine and something about the foot work (the seven basic stances) assisted greatly in the final healing and recovery stages of an Achilles tendon I tore last year. Also, as a result of the private lessons and group classes, I have lost more body fat, honed more muscle and improved reflexes beyond anything I expected in such a short time. Even better, to get started, you dont have to acquire any equipment beyond a standard uniform and can practice anywhere you can plant your feet on the ground. All in all, a wonderful experience and I am looking forward to my second belt test...because I can.

I began training at this school in 2008, and it jumpstarted my current love of the martial arts. When I first visited the school, the traditional Chinese interior and obvious care for the equipment caught my eye. However, it was my meeting with Sifu Travis Alschbach that made it clear how different this school was from others in the area. If you are interested in learning martial arts for any reason -- health, self-defense, strength gaining, philosophy, etc -- then this is the school for you. All aspects of Kung Fu are taught (and taught well), including basic movements, forms, joint locking, grappling, weaponry, and hand-to-hand sparring/fighting. Basic Chinese history and philosophy is also a key element of instruction, and ones understanding of such is tested thoroughly in order to reach the advanced levels. Advancing is also up to the student; while students are encouraged to test their limits, they are never forced. I have since moved away and train in martial arts elsewhere. However, I make it a point to return to this school every time I come back to Texas. The quality of instruction and welcoming staff make learning at SWYI a joy.

I had no previous experience when I decided I wanted to start practicing a martial art, and when I had made the decision to do so I realized I wanted to study and practice a style that wasnt of the "norm." I cam across SWYIs website and was immediately intrigued. I decided to go check out the school and was quickly impressed by the schools atmosphere alone. It felt truly authentic walking in and being toured by Sifu Travis Alschbach. The schools lineage being traced all the way back to the Shaolin Temple in China really shows in the school, in Sifu, the instructors and the curriculum. I have been a member of the school for over a year and I have developed much better agility, balance, strength and flexibility than I have ever possessed. The students and instructors definitely give a feeling of belonging and they make it a family-like atmosphere. Always willing to assist in training if you are in need of help. I originally started martial arts for career purposes, but now it is a very important aspect of my life.

My son and I have been training at Shaolin Wu-Yi Institute for about two years. It has been a wonderful experience and we love how the school holds true to the traditional Chinese Kung Fu teachings. Our Sifu, Travis Alschbach, is very patient and knowledgable and has a passion for teaching students of all ages. The training is designed to increase you physical stamina, balance and self confidence but most importantly the training emphasis respect and discipline. Tonight I had the experience of seeing the joy in the eyes of a young 6 year old girl earning her first belt advancement while experiencing a personal feeling of accomplish earning my "Yellow II" belt as a 51 year old man. The instructors are great and the camaraderie is genuine. I give my highest recommendation to Shaolin Wu-Yi Institute,....it is truly a great experience.

Ive studied at many, many different martial arts schools over an extended period of time, but I have Shaolin Wu-Yi to thank more than any other. There is a true love for the art here. Capable, experienced instructors work with you to make sure you achieve your goals, whether self-defense, performance, fitness, competition, or anything else. The quality and standard of training is enormously superior to the cut-and-paste "McDojo" environment of factory-line black belts, which so many people who have tried martial arts before are familiar with. At Shaolin Wu-Yi Institute, youll develop a powerful understanding of all the different facets of Chinese martial arts, and reap benefits in combat skill, mental clarity, and daily living. Cant recommend Shaolin Wu-Yi institute more highly.

My son is 5 years old and has been a student at SWYI for the past 6 months. The teachers are professional, knowledgeable and patient. I am impressed with the Kung Fu that my son has learned but this is not what I love the most about the school. My son has learned respect in a way that I just do not think we could do on our own. You would have to experience the change to believe it. His ability to focus has increased exponentially. I bring my running energetic boy into class and they transform him into an energetic but disciplined martial artist. This is a gift that will benefit him in school and in life. The respect that I have for Sifu (teacher) Alschbach is indescribable. I am proud and honored to have my son trained by ALL of the instructors!

Shaolin Wu-Yi Institute offers a true experience in the art of traditional Shaolin Kung Fu. There are opportunities for all ages, male or female, to experience a training regime that improves the physical and mental well-being. I joined SWYI 4 years ago with my teenage son. Our physical endurance, patience, and attitudes have improved greatly. The challenges range from individual performance to being part of a competing team at tournaments. The instructors are trained and very knowledgeable at their tasks, and the group classes are run with precision to challenge all levels of participants. I highly recommend SWYI.

Absolutely wonderful school. It completely changed my life. Sifu Travis Alschbach is incredibly skilled and knowledgable for whom I have only the deepest respect. The instructors are skilled and excited about Kung Fu and are quite flexible and accommodating with schedules. The lineage goes straight back to the Shaolin Temple and the Kung Fu taught has been kept alive and pure through the dedication and passion of those whove passed it down through the centuries. I whole-heartedly recommend this school full of, not only respectful and welcoming people, but a beautiful and timeless art which still holds modern practicality.

For two years, my son has attended lessons at Shaolin Wu-Yi Institute. He is now going into 3rd grade, and he loves going to Kung Fu. I have seen him grow in his skills - and even become willing to compete which is a big deal since he tends to be an introvert. Sifu and the rest of the teachers have been instrumental in helping my son develop respect, discipline, and independence. He wants to work hard here, but what is most important to me is that he runs out with a huge grin after every lesson. He really enjoys being a part of this community. P.S. I also feel we get great value for our monthly fee!
