I initially give them 3 stars because I went there a few years ago and they fixed the transmission in my car, no problem. And its been fine since. My last trip was very disappointing. Took my newer car there for 2 issues. The engine was making a very prominent ticking noise like a bad timing chain and it ran rough sometimes like with a slight misfire. I wanted them to check out and repair those 2 issues. Well, they had my vehicle for a week and a half. I called a few times just to touch bases because the dealership wanted to know what the problem was and theyd give me a rental car based on that. They just wanted to know how long theyd need to front me a rental. Well Cottmans never followed up with me or the dealer. I called to get an update after 3 days. Was told they were still breaking it down to check the timing chain. Couple more days pass and still the same answer. The last time I called them the lady got an attitude. I explained Im not rushing them to fix it, just needed a diagnosis so we could get a rental. A week is a long time to not have a car. Mind you, Ive dealt with them in the past with the same dealer and the procedure was flawless. I got my car in, they told the dealer the problem, got a rental from the dealer and all was well. So later that day the same woman calls my wife, not me still with an attitude and says well need a new engine. So I called them back because they still had not spoken with the dealer so we could get a rental. She said shed need to speak with the mechanic and get back to me. Now this is what baffles me. She called back and says its ready to be picked up. They didnt find anything wrong. So Im like it took over a week to tear it down to check the timing chain, you said wed need a new engine. And in a matter of hours youve put it all back together and its ready to go??? Yes, well change the oil and see if that quiets it down. Other than that its normal. Thats just the way the engine sounds. Wow...I couldnt believe it. And by the way, they didnt change the oil. So they owe me an oil change. Fast forward a few months and my engine light is on and the vehicle wont accelerate sometimes. So I go to the actual Chevy dealer even though Ill have to pay out of pocket because they are not in my dealers warranty network. In a matter of HOURS they call me and tell me the timing chains are bad (the engine light was just for the gas cap). $2100 and 2 days later timing chains are replaced and its ready for pickup. Engine purrs like a kitten and runs like a champ. I spent all this time driving around with my car sounding like a diesel explaining to people thats just the way it sounds. The issue was so obvious I dont understand why they couldnt diagnose it. So I gave them 3 stars. Take away another for the lady at the front desk and her attitude.

This is a truly professional establishment. I took my Cadillac there thinking I had transmission issues after having taken the vehicle to pep boys and another private establishment with no conclusion as to the issue. When I went to Cottman in Norfolk, they inspected the vehicle and indicated the problem was not transmission related which was a relief. The mechanic Mr. Jim Garcia promptly found some discrepancies with the air intake and tightened up the system for me and told me he wasnt sure if that was creating the noise but if the noise came back to bring the vehicle back. When I went to pay they did not want to charge me!!! 4 days later I called because the rattling noise was still present, I went in that very day and they conducted a more in depth inspection and found the culprit of the noise to be a loose heat shield, so they went ahead and fixed it. To my surprise I went again to pay and the owner replied "Nothing to charge here, all we did was tightened some bolts". I could not be more satisfied with the service provided here. Not to mention competitive prices for example I have been shopping around for a transmission oil and filter change and their price is of the lowest I found as an added bonus to the amazing customer service. They have a new client with me and I will definitely recommend to my friends and family.

This is the best place to go if youre having transmission issues. My 2005 Chevy Avalanche kept sticking in third gear so I brought it to Jim and Cindy. Both of these folks take pride their business and were very clear in communicating the potential issues and costs associated with both identifying the problem and fixing what it could potentially be. Their chief transmission guy Joe took my on a personal test drive in my vehicle and we had a conversation about what could or couldnt be happening. The problem turned out to be electrical in nature but the awesome team at Cottman was able to fix it and provided a detailed invoice including parts and labor with an honest breakdown of what was broken and why it needed to be replaced in order to get my truck up and running again. Ever since picking it up my truck has been running like new and I have peice of mind that the work that was preformed was both necessary and executed by an experienced team! I also consulted with a dealership and Cottmans price beat them while still using brand new factory parts. Ill definitely be back to see these folks if any other issues arise...these folks aint shifty but theyll definitely keep your vehicle shiftin!!!!!

Cottman Transmission is by far the best. They are a family owned business, that helped me through a very trying time with my cooling system. First I was quoted an absolutely ridiculous amount from my normal mechanic whom I trusted very much. I told him forget it and that was it. So I decided to call a few places. One quote was okay but I didnt really like the way he acted on the telephone. So then I called Cottman Transmission and told them what was going on and if he could give me a quote for what my other mechanic said was wrong. It was $500 less so I took it straight up there. The first person I met was Jim. Jim was very professional and very kind. That was really important to me because Im a woman and I dont want to be taken advantage of. I then met the owners Bob and Cindy. They were a lot of fun to talk with. Anyway, they fix the car but it still had a couple of hiccups to so I had to bring it back in. Unfortunately there was another fee but Bob really looked out for me. I got my car back today and its running wonderfully. if anyone is in need of transmission repair, auto care, or just maintenance Cottman Transmission is the place to go.

Got them to tow my car to there shop for maintenance. Handed the key to tow truck driver and everything was ok. Next day they give me a call saying that they didnt have my key. They said the tow truck driver was a personnel friend and would not have lost the key. So I just shrugged it off and payed them to make me 2 new keys. Next day they called and asked "if my radio had been missing before they got it" I said no and expressed my dismay. They basically told me it was my fault for not giving them the key. I went ahead and spent $2000+ on car repairs and did not get any kind of discount or repayment for them having my radio stolen. Go to pick the car up and the "missing key" is scratched up on the driver side car mat. I doubt they just missed it seeing as most of the work was from inside the car..will not be going there again
