TL;DR: Im mostly mad about the cancellation policy, which requires you to "give notice" in person, and requires a 30 days in advance, guaranteeing that they will get to charge you for an extra month after you want to stop. Though I have had a few other gripes over the years. In depth: The facility isnt bad. Its not particularly large, but its never been busy enough for me to have to wait for equipment. The equipment is older, but works well, for the most part. There was a bike in the spin room that was broken for well over a year. It wasnt an issue for anyone that I know of until I had to leave the class one day because all of the bikes were in use when I got there, with the exception of that specific bike. Speaking of classes, they use Les Miles classes, but personally, the classes were mostly at poor times. Either very early in the morning or during the work day. They have very few classes in the evenings, which are usually only yoga. I understand that the class times are based on attendance, but I dont remember them ever trying an evening workout class. The workers have been pleasant, so theres that. The beef of my unhappiness is their billing. They require written notice for anything. My wife had our baby and the gym required that we come in-person with a written request to freeze our accounts, since she and I would be too busy to come to the gym for a few months. However, we were told we could only freeze the account for 1 month. Any longer would require permission from the owner, for whatever reason. Again, it may be industry standard, or they might have a good reason for doing it, but I dont understand why it was such a hassle from a gym to freeze our accounts. Regardless, I wrote a letter to the owner explaining our situation and requested three months off for both of us, which I delivered in-person. However, after several months, we found out that they had continued to charge one of our memberships. The manager apologized for the mix up, but refused to refund us for the mishap. Instead, we had to settle for account credit. I figured that it was probably an honest mistake and moved on. But now Im thinking differently. Im sure that the contract we signed all those years ago says that they require a 30 cancellation notice. But that doesnt mean that I have to like it. It may be industry standard, and if it is, its pretty unfair. I understand apartments, storage units, and the like requiring notice- they have a finite number of spots and its a big revenue loss to have them empty. But a gym membership? I may be wrong, but I dont think that they have a limited membership roster. I doubt that they are going to require 30 days or do anything to find new members to replace us. The 30 day notice is a blatant reach to hit people for more money one last time. Its simply greed. I expect more from a local business, especially one in Olympia. Needless to say, I will not recommend this gym to anyone anymore. I will not be back. Im extremely disappointed.

If I could give negative five stars I would. I moved over two hundred miles away over two years ago (July 2015). Despite telling them this and requesting that my membership be cancelled they kept the membership active. Their excuse was that "it has to be done in writing." They kept my membership active until April of 2017 and sent a bill to collections. A bill that I had previously never received. they apparently called and left messages but I do not recall getting these messages which means that the messages must have been left well over a year ago. I never received a letter. the only way I found out that it was in collections was because I saw their number on my caller ID. No letter. No voicemail. I called it back to inquire and they told me that I owed basically two years of dues. I called 5th avenue fitness back and they said that it was "out of their hands." In generally I feel incredibly taken advantage of and just generally ripped off. If I wasnt paying my dues then why didnt you cancel the membership much earlier? Why would you let this go on for two years? I guess its because it pays to rip people off. I was planning on rejoining once I move back to Olympia but I want this policy to change first so that this doesnt happen to other people.

I was physically pushed by the owner as I was escorted from the facility. My crime? I asked one of the instructors if I could make a short video with my phone. He was showing me what I had done wrong in form and I wanted to be able to reference it later. As I was recording, and with permission from the staff member, I felt a pair of hands shove me. A man was yelling at me. I was confused and not sure what was happening. It was the owner. He was screaming at me about trying to steal his business as he kicked me out of the gym. I have the video on YouTube now. I will not be back and my friends wont be either.

Amber G - You were asked not to film in the gym to promote your own agenda. The authority to film in the gym is not at the discretion of an instructor but at the discretion of the owner with a signed release from members participating in that group. You could of avoided any perception of hurt feelings by using some good old fashion common sense. Its unfortunate you have chosen social media to air out your dirty laundry, in the future may I suggest thinking your actions through and follow appropriate protocol.

Friendly, helpful staff! Machines and weights are never too busy; I can always use the one I want. They stay on top of maintenance of machines and keep gym clean. Great hours too! Ive been a member almost a year. I havent taken a class yet but I might try one at some point. Haha my only gripe is I wish they had a swimming pool.

5th Ave is a great gym. Costumer service is amazing, friendly instructors and a great laid back atmosphere. Their goal is to make your goals come true and they do a great job doing so. The gym has so much to offer and you get great options. It really is better then most other gyms.

Raw, diverse, versatile, sexy. Love this gym. Im into some eccentric......type training and instead of "who does this guy think he is" looks, I get questions and complements. This gym is for improving yourself and everyone who goes here supports that. Highly recommended.

The staff and instructors at 5th ave are top notch with a huge variety of classes and fitness options. High ceilings and an open second floor for cardio is great.
