In September 2014, myself and some family members went to Outer Banks (Waves) for a Sunday-to-Sunday trip. With intentions to leave Saturday night, we began to get things together Saturday morning, only to find that one of our vehicles would not start. Yep, just like that. Further self-diagnosing suggested this wasnt going to be any sort of 5 minute fix. To our surprise, A OK was a matter of 1,000 feet further down the street. Upon driving in, I will admit that I wasnt quite "sure" about everything. This mechanic shop is basically operated right in the driveway of a home with an outdoor lift. This is considerably different to the type of shops we have back home, but given we had little alternative, we struck up conversation with Joe and he took a look immediately following the 10 minute job he was finishing up. One thing lead to another and his mobile computer confirmed one of his suspicions - bad cam shaft sensor. In this particular vehicle, the cam shaft sensor was pretty involved to get to, requiring the removal of a number of parts just to get to the problematic area. Sources online were giving us really high quotes (700 on the low end, 1,200 on the high end), so we braced ourselves for impact. Due to the close distance to where our vehicle died, Joe simply tied the problematic vehicle to his own vehicle and pulled it to his shop. We pushed it in to position in his driveway, then we ourselves ran up north to Napa Auto Parts to grab the part (which, to our astonishment, they had in stock - no other auto part stores anywhere in the area had this part in stock). It turned into a decent half day affair from the beginning until the problematic vehicle + the new part was on A OKs lot, given the troubleshooting time in the morning and the 40 minute one way drive time to/from Napa, etc. Joe worked on the vehicle until dark on Saturday, and assured us he would get started on it first thing Sunday (wow, really?). I had no idea what his idea of "first thing Sunday" meant, but when we rolled down at 9 AM to check things out, he was already on the home stretch of putting things back together. When we got out of the car, he said "you missed it fire up!" Ahh, music to my ears. We left at 10 AM that morning. A OK is a cash based automotive shop. This may be a little inconvenient when youre dealing with a repair thats a few hundred bucks, but fortunately we had two ATMs within a half mile. While the ATMs had an irritating withdrawal limit of 200 dollars per shot, we were still extremely happy with the final price Joe quoted us, as it was still just over 200 bucks less than the cheapest price we found online when we researched what others were paying for this exact repair for this exact vehicle. Looking back, I cant help but to think more and more highly of Joe as I run the sequence of events through my head. There we were, basically stuck with a repair beyond our capability to remedy hundreds of miles from home with the next day being Sunday, and there he was, on a Saturday afternoon/evening and Sunday morning, available to fix the issue. We wish you and your business the best of luck, sir. Thank you again.

We were very happy with the service here. My wife and I were on a 2 week vacation in Rodanthe when the window on our vehicle became "frozen" in the down position. We were facing a long ride home in the heat with no AC. We looked on the web for an auto repair place and located A-OK. Luckily, it was very close to where we were staying. I took the car and Joe right away diagnosed the problem as the "window regulator." he said he could get the part and could do it the next day. The next day, I left the car, and it took him about an hour to fix it. I did have to walk about 2 miles on the beach to retrieve my vehicle, but that really was not that bad of punishment because the beach in Rodanthe is beautiful. That being said Joe fixed the car for what I believe was a reasonable rate (this guy could really rip off people in this little town because the closest alternative is probably at least 20 miles away), and even parked it in the shade so it would not be too hot when I picked it up. My only complaint is that he only accepts cash, but I guess that is understandable with such a transient customer base. I highly recommend this place if you have auto problems while vacationing in this area of the outer banks.

Had an AC issue and called after 5. He was very accommodating and let me come right down. Fixed the issue and seemed really knowledgeable. When you get there you might get taken aback by the rough look of the place, but I was extremely satisfied with the service. We had overcharged the ac and it was going out on the safety. He showed me what it was doing and reclaimed some of the refrigerant. Working great now. Only charged $40 which I thought was extremely reasonable. Cash only, which is a bit frustrating, but thats my only real complaint. Wish he wouldnt smoke while working with the customer... But I also dont know whats normal here vs where Im from. Very minor complaints though. I would absolutely use him again.

Took advantage of us. Car broke down on the Outer Banks, and this was the closest mechanic according to Google Maps. We were looking for someone to tow our car and look at it. We asked him if we should use AAA to tow us to his place, but he immediately told us not to, and that he would be doing the towing. He arrived without a towing-truck in an SUV and looked at our car for 5 minutes, told us the engine was broke and charged us $60 cash only -- and left. I want to emphasize that he specifically told us not to contact AAA for towing and that he would be doing this much faster vs. waiting for hours. On the phone he even gave us a quote for towing ($50) which we felt was fair. We strongly feel that he took advantage of us.

On a group trip to avon nc 6 days in ran into car trouble. While over in ocracoke my 97 jeep wrangler bogged out losing power and died. At 715 we were left ditching it to return in morning. I called two shops hatteras area both booked so looked further to a ok in salvo. Luckily we have tow bar setup for jeep so we hauled it up to him took us right in. As soon as I cranked it he knew exactly the problem bad catalytic converter. Unfortunately being out on on 12 limited on part availability he gave me a temp fix and it was off and running. Joes knowledge and real world tech experience was impressive for such a laid back outfit. Very helpful would recommend.

My boyfriend and I were on vacation and I needed a new radiator called Aokay the guy charged us $400 in labor the radiator was only $200 after 2 days!!!! finally fixed it We get home 6 hours later and my light for the radiator comes on went to open the hood AND CANT! !!!! cause he broke the handle! now my car has over heated and I have to spend even more money to fix what Aokay should have already done! So thank you for the Aokay service! This guy should be fired!
