BEWARE: The work they did was fine and the crew arrived when they said but the customer service and response time was HORRIBLE. Before I purchased my new home, Balken came out to give me an estimate for repairs on 7/15, which I had to pay for. I was told this cost would be deducted from the price of future work when invoiced. We already had a professional do a full inspection of the house, which included the roof, and pointed out the places of concern where we needed repairs. Balken was told, by us and our inspection report, exactly what needed repair before they even got on the roof or in the attic. Then, it took a week (and me contacting the representative who came to my home) to get the quote from them and for them to cash my check that I gave to the rep in person at the time of the estimate. After I agreed to the repairs and cost, it took weeks to get them to return my emails and calls so I could schedule. I initiated the conversation about scheduling on July 27 and was definitely forgotten or ignored. Told they would call me back, but didnt. I was finally able to get an email confirmation on Aug 15 that my work was scheduled on Aug 17, that Wednesday. It probably helped that we had actually seen leaking and I had sent them an email about that a few days earlier. The dispute over the credit for the estimate came when I received my invoice on Sept 1 and quickly responded with an email explaining the situation. They called me back the next day and said that credit only applied if we had the entire roof replaced. The owner immediately shifted the blame and insisted that my realtor and I are wrong, that we just misunderstood. Considering we had to deal with about 5 or 6 different people at their company, I dont think it is impossible that we were told we would get this credit, especially if you kind of do that anyway. I am a young woman buying my first home and I think they took advantage of the situation and I am not pleased with the customer service that I received one bit. I felt disrespected and was spoken to like I was an idiot. There was no offer to rectify the situation or meet me half way. I had a lot of repairs and renovations done to my home recently by several different vendors and had no issues except with Balken. I will definitely be telling anyone who asks not to use this company in the future. I would have used a different company based on the experience I had with the scheduling process but I had already paid $150 that I was told I would get back in credit if I went with their company. I understand things get busy and people make mistakes, but I want people to be upfront with me at the get go and not drag me along in the dark for a month and a half. Be transparent with customers in the future during every process of their repair beginning with the estimate. Own up when you make a mistake - take the opportunity to remedy the situation with your customers so they dont walk away with a bitter taste in their mouths.

I wouldnt bother to do this since it has been so long but Im still looking for a competent roofer and just saw Ol Balken pop up in my search. Im still seething so need to put this out there for the universe. As another recent reviewer stated, this company declined to provide me an estimate also and heres how it went down: After having an estimator out, I then played phone tag with them for weeks. Weeks turned into 2 months and I finally got persistent enough to talk with someone about getting the estimator back for further analysis since they lost our paperwork from original visit. That was red flag number 1, but I wanted to give them a chance. (Actually I just want a roof that doesnt leak...) On the day of the second appointment, I get a voicemail from the estimator saying that he had discussed the job with Bob the owner back when I was originally there and regretfully decline to provide estimate, which no one had told me. I got this message at 2:52pm, eight minutes before I was expecting to meet with him a second time. It was as if he had just realized that his 3pm appointment was at our house...the house he didnt want to quote. I emailed the company back asking for an explanation about why they couldnt bid for us and why no one told me this in the first place. I was shocked when I was told that they had an appointment for me that day but that I didnt show up. To my own house. So obviously that was what the estimator told the office. A blatant lie. I was home. I had arranged childcare so that I could have this meeting. They were condescending in their reply and completely unprofessional. I informed the office what really happened and there was nothing...No apology, not even an attempt at customer service. Crickets. I even forwarded the cowardly voicemail message that documented the exchange from that day and still nothing. Id recommend that anyone looking for a roofer look elsewhere. This is not an honest company. Theyre also known as Asheville Skylight so consider this their review too. I may still be miffed enough to post this under that business as well.

We received proposals from four roofing contractors and chose Balken for their guidance on shingle brands, the warranty, their price and reputation. We made the right choice. The communication at every stage was extremely professional - from the initial visit to the final invoice. Our expectations were managed at every step. The roof looks wonderful, but way before the final install - we had confidence in Balken. I highly recommend them. You can look around - but Ill save you the trouble. This is the best. Youll not find a better price, service or product in this area.

RUDE AND COMPLETELY UNPROFESSIONAL!! I called and said I was trying to gather some information about metal roofs. The woman who answered the phone said she would like to set up an in home estimate. I said that was fine but could I first talk to someone to get more information on types of different metal roofing available. She actually had the nerve to tell me that I must not be serious about buying a roof if I didnt want to set up an on site estimate first! How rude. I said thank you and hung up. Thats all the info I needed. Bottom Line: Keep Looking

We LOVE our new Sun Tunnels! We placed one in a dark hallway and two 14" tunnels in our living room. The difference is astounding! The entire Balken team have been wonderful to work with. The installers worked hard to place them where we wanted them, while taking our roofs peaks and valleys into consideration, giving us maximum light. They completed the job in one day. Surprisingly very little dust. We can recommend Balken Roofing and the Sun Tunnel product without any hesitation!
