If you are one of those people who desperately wants to try CrossFit but feel intimidated to step into the box, I can identify with you. My friend from the east side of town wanted me to attend Reflexion over the other boxes in Hillsboro because it is known for having "legit" coaches and turning out successful competitors, (at the CrossFit Regional Games, but also at the smaller CrossFit and Olympic Lifting meets in the area). The first time I stepped through their doors, I met one of the owners and explained that I was on a fitness and weight-loss journey and was afraid that I was not at a stage in my journey yet that would enable me to keep up with the class. He reassured me that I would be more than able to keep up and that I would have fun (he was right). The beauty of CrossFit Reflexion is the community that has been built; it does not matter where you are on your fitness journey or your size or shape because the WOD (workout of the day) can be scaled to keep you safe and to give you an effective workout. For example, if you cant run, you might row. If you cant do a pull-up (yet) like me, you are given not only coaching to get there, but options in the meantime to keep you inspired, not frustrated. One thing I absolutely love about this box would be their Olympic Lifting classes, where you get to practice the hard lifts under watchful expert eyes (snatch, clean and jerk), and how form is _always_ emphasized over the amount of weight you put on the bar. And, finally, the last bit of reassurance I want to leave you with is what "they" say is true; the last person to finish is the one who gets cheered for the most. The other members are SO supportive during workouts ... often when we are running little 200m jobs in warm-up, when you pass another member, they reach out for a high-5. Youll start getting social media friend requests and invited to go to eat with your new friends after a workout. Im so hooked on CrossFit and the community that Im starting to look into my goal of doing (scaled) competitions! I initially called ahead to arrange a free 3-class trial, bought a "punchcard" ... but quickly joined as a member because the workouts are always different, fun, challenging and I always feel supported by excellent coaching.

I my first review of Crossfit Reflexion was written 2 years ago, since then CFR has met and exceeded my expectations. Having been with them for over 2 1/2 years I have seen them go through from start up to becoming what they are today; one of the premier Crossfit gyms in Portland. The coaching and programing are just two things that make Crossfit Reflexion a draw for so many. I am now 50 years old and I can say that I am one of their many success stories. I came there injured, sick and very overweight and out of shape. I had tried another CF gym for a year with little success, being more hurt and tired than seeing change in my body, strength and mobility. Shawn Wilson and Jesse Udom changed all of that and over the past 2 1/2 years I have gone from feeling and being weak, old and tired to living a full life again. Coach Shawn Wilson (SW) an accomplished athlete himself, shares his knowledge and expertise on diet, exercise, weight lifting and mobility freely. Always with a kind word and a great attitude, he can coach and communicate to a new person or a seasoned veteran. SW has an innate ability correct and complement, these qualities and more make him and exceptional person, father, athlete, coach and friend to many. He values people over profit and has shown a consistency of good character inside and outside of the gym. Coach Jesse Udom (Coach J) is a premier Olympic Weight Lifting coach, bringing and combining his knowledge of lifting and CF to the gym. Coach J can coach the novice or elite, his training and background has helped hundreds of people that he has worked with write their name on the PR board (Personal Record) for lifting. Coach J is a hard worker inside and outside of the gym, great person to have in your corner to start or build on your lifting skills. First week is always "free", or get a groupon and come give CFR a try. Is it easy, no. Will you be sore, yes. Can you improve the quality of your life, yes. "We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit." Aristotle

It seems like any CrossFitter you talk to is going to say their gym is the best. Pretty much everyone doing it has fun, sees results, and likes the people. Its obviously no different here, but since joining CrossFit Reflexion Ive noticed that most other clients are transplants from other CrossFit gyms. Here are some reasons I suspect a lot of them have stayed and why I love it here: 1) Personalized coaching. They dont just count your reps, but they look at your form, fatigue, and recovery and give you tips on how you can best progress without getting hurt. 2) More than just WoDs (workouts of the day). Reflexion has strength training that complements the WoDs, coach Js olympic lifting classes, classes for kids, nutrition programs, open gym hours, and more. 3) Not just for meat heads. Their clients are people of all fitness levels, each getting out of it what they need to meet their goals. Im older than most people here and nowhere close to the same level as a lot of them but I feel right at home. Its all about our individual goals and what it takes to reach them and set new ones. 4) Learning and growing. Since I joined Ive learned a lot about my body mechanics, including some issues that I developed over the years of working out on my own. Ive learned new movements and more importantly, the principles that help me execute them more efficiently and more safely. Overall, this is a fantastic place and I look forward to workouts and gains more than I have in years. If youre shopping around for a gym, definitely stop in, talk with the coaches, and meet some members to see if its a good fit for you.

Shawn and Jesse have created a gym -- and a community -- where you will get better. It doesnt matter who you are, where you came from, or what you are currently capable of, youre going to get better. You dont really have a choice in the matter. Being better is engrained in everything CrossFit Reflexion programs and does on a daily basis. If you are new to the game and, for the first time, experiencing what the human body can and should be doing, youll get better. If youre an experienced athlete, your form will be critiqued. Your workouts will be scaled (or increased) appropriately. Youll train with some incredibly devoted and talented athletes -- many of whom have seen high levels of competition, none of whom are arrogant or unwelcoming. Whether you want to get back into shape, train for a specific sport, train CrossFit in hopes of making it to the Regional stage (and beyond), Jesse and Shawn will get you there if thats what you want to do. Theyve created the environment to be the best you can be. Its up to the athlete to take them up on the offer. Glad I did.

10/10 - let me tell you who I am. I am a middle aged man who has spent the last decade on a couch or on a chair in front of a computer. I needed to make a change but was afraid to do it myself. Having never lifted weights before, it is intimidating to think of form, strength conditioning, etc. without having vivid images of sprained backs, dislodged disks, or paralysis. This is where CrossFit has come in. Their approach has been personal and focused on improving core strength. This means that noone yells at you to add more weights or do more reps, unless you are ready. Instead, be prepared to work on the right movement, gradual strengthening, and lifestyle outside of the gym. The coaches, as well as the other members, have been extremely welcoming. In 2 months, I have seen immediate positive impacts to my health, weight, stamina, and fitness. I would highly recommend this place to the most gifted athlete AND/OR the most gifted couch potato.
