We had Hammer and Hand build our bathroom and attic bedroom and remodel our kitchen. I chose them because while we were looking for houses in town I got a chance to see how meticulous and elegant their work is and trusted theyd do a great job. I thought they would be very expensive but since Id heard so many nightmare stories about remodels I felt I should at least interview them. In the end they were very competitive (and our kitchen looks great having only spent only around $5000). The bathroom/attic remodel was a wonderful experience and all the people we worked with (the architect, design aids, primary carpenter Jon, and particularly Arron the manager of our job) were top notch and delightful to work with. We get so many compliments about our attic suite. They knew we had a very tight budget and they worked really hard to deliver both top quality and good economy. Things went swimmingly and they were honest and generous at every turn. With the kitchen things went a little awry. I wasnt happy with the mess and some of the workmanship right after it was finished. They immediately sent in cleaners and a handyman to fix everything. But as time went on, I still felt a bit unhappy about minor issues. I called our previous job manager, Arron, because I really trusted him, and he came in right away looked at everything. I actually felt guilty about complaining and just wanted his feedback about my concerns. He was unbelievable! He got out a pen and paper and started taking detailed notes. Imagine, I mentioned a number of things that were minor but not cheap to fix and said "but dont worry about it because it is not a big deal....we can live with it." He asked me very earnestly, "would you mind if we fix it anyway?" They did all the repairs to perfection...and then some. I insisted our leaky kitchen faucet was not their fault but they still replaced it! There was no charge for the repairs. I mean, I thought working with contractors was supposed to be a nightmare, universally, but Hammer in Hand was a dream. Im so grateful.

My family lives in the family home that was built in the early 1930s. There have not been many upgrades to this house. The house was so cold in the winter, I would wear my coat and hat in the house all day and night and I could feel the wind coming through. In the summer, if the weather got to 90 degrees , it would get so hot, my room air conditioners would be on the rest of the day and night and never really cool down. I applied to Clean Energy Works of Oregon who connected me with Hammer and Hand. Both CEWO and H & H came in to do a Home Performance review and determined my home would greatly benefit with attic and wall insulation, a new furnace, and a tankless water heater. Kevin Berg of H & H gave me an overview of the process and advised me step by step what to expect at each phase of the project. A schedule was given to me before the work started so I would know what to expect and the work was done as scheduled. When the work started, Tom Elsass of H & H was the point person who oversaw the project and interfaced with the different workers coming in and out of the house. Communication was great between workers, myself, and Tom. All the workers were very attentive listening to my concerns and responding in a timely and professional manner. Everybody was respectful of the house and each other. They put on shoe covers each time they entered the house and prepped the rooms so that the dust and dirt didnt go everywhere. When the work was finished, everything was clean. Through this process I learned that Hammer & Hand and CEWO are highly knowledgeable and up to date with trends in sustainability. I respect their honesty and using the best quality materials. Immediately after the work was done, the first thing I noticed was that my home was quieter. Now, I can take my hat and coat off when Im home. I cant wait to see what summer brings to the house and I hope I will see a big savings in my utility bills. I highly recommend Hammer and Hand!

We hired Hammer and Hand 3 years ago to remodel our utterly horrendous kitchen and convert our second story attic space into a master suite. Much to our surprise, we actually enjoyed our remodeling experience! We expected to have our lives totally disrupted and our living space reduced to a dusty construction zone. We also anticipated having to argue and nitpick about every little detail to make certain the job was done to our standards. I can not tell you how pleasantly surprised and completely satisfied we were with the actual process. We found Sam (the co-owner we developed the contract with) engaged, interested and amiable. Stephanie (our lead carpenter) was very easy to work with and took such great care of us. She made sure our home was sealed up during the construction and spotless afterwards, she was our advocate with all of the subcontractors - keeping our best interest in mind. She kept us in the loop for all important details but didn’t mire us down with minutia. She even made sure our high-maintenance dog was well taken care of during the constant flow of subcontractors in and out of the house. At the end of the job we had two beautiful new spaces that our friends and family rave about, we managed to stay within our budget (as much as any remodel actually allows), and we have had great follow-up with Sam and Stephanie with the couple little things that inevitably come up after a project is complete. I can’t say enough good things about our remodeling experience. I wouldn’t think twice about hiring Hammer and Hand for future remodeling projects.

Hammer and Hand did a major remodel of our turn-of-the-century house in two phases. The first involved adding a half-bath and doing lots of carpentry and painting essentially every internal surface of the house; the second was a transformation of a dark, rustic storage attic into a master suite. At every turn of every project, the entire team was professional, responsible, inspired, and really easy to work with. It was important to us that we find people that understood our aesthetic vision, and the project manager for Hammer and Hand assembled an ideal team of an architect, designer, lead carpenter, and an array of subcontractors. The architect and designer really grasped what we wanted, and it was amazing to watch our ideas take shape in drawings, through every phase of construction, and in the final finishes. In a very old house, we realized that issues would come up, and when they did, Hammer and Hand came forward quickly with solutions and costs. Still, our projects came together on time, at least within a few days, and within budget. The house was empty during the first phase, but we lived through the construction during the second phase. Our lead carpenter arrived every morning while our kids were still asleep and worked around our familys morning rituals with friendliness and a sense of humor. Our house has had a true transformation, and everyone involved took ownership of the details and the outcomes, which are, in a word, spectacular.
