AAA Approved Auto Repair Facility – UPDATED REVIEW As a relative newcomer to Anthem, Arizona, I was pleased to discover a local auto maintenance and repair facility with membership in the “AAA Approved Auto Repair Program.” As a 42-year member of the American Automobile Association, the AAA rating was the deciding factor for choosing Tobias Automotive (the excellent Google/Yelp ratings were also important). FIRST VISIT: I made an appointment for an oil change, and arrived about 10 minutes early. Within about 15 minutes, my 1998 Ford Expedition was taken to a maintenance bay. Waiting for the oil change was a pleasant experience, because the customer waiting area is comfortable, very clean and there is plenty of complimentary coffee. The oil change was completed in about 45 minutes. The vehicle was conveniently brought to the front and parked near the waiting room door. The attendant removed the paper floor cover and plastic seat protector (nice touch), and I was on my way. SECOND VISIT: I made an 8:00 a.m. appointment for an engine steam cleaning to pinpoint an oil leak that was discovered during the prior oil change. For this appointment, I was told the vehicle needed to be left for “most of the day,” and someone would call me when the vehicle was ready. By the way, Tobias Automotive provides FREE LOCAL SHUTTLE SERVICE, and a polite shuttle driver dropped me off at my home in Anthem. As with any 4 and 5-Star business, they strive for excellence and to please their customers. However, due to a “scheduling issue,” my vehicle was not ready by the end of the day as promised. However, I was given the option of leaving the vehicle overnight or picking up the vehicle that evening. I chose to pick up the vehicle and return at another time. I wrote a Google review (albeit 10 months later) expressing the mostly POSITIVE aspects of Tobias Automotive of Anthem, but I also expressed displeasure for the above-mentioned inconvenience during the second visit to this business. UPDATE: HERE IS WHY I CHANGED MY REVIEW FROM 4 TO 5 STARS: To my surprise, the owner of Tobias Automotive contacted me by telephone with sincere concern about the anomalous experience I received during the second visit. He clearly stated the service I received that day was not up to their standards, and it certainly did not reflect their endeavor for excellence. He sincerely apologized, and in an act of good faith, he offered a complimentary oil change on my next visit. I expressed my gratitude for the offer of a complimentary oil change, but I also respectfully declined his offer due to potential conflict of interest as a professional writer (now retired, but old habits are difficult to break). Because the owner of this business took the time to personally rectify the anomaly, this is a strong indication Tobias Automotive of Anthem truly cares about their business standards; as well as the satisfaction of their customers. Therefore, with genuine pleasure, I changed my initial 4-Star rating to a full 5-STAR rating. You really should give these kind folks a try, because small businesses with high standards and noble business acumen are a rare commodity. EDITORIAL NOTE: When the owner of this business contacted me as regarding my June 2017 review, he asked me why I wrote the review many months after the fact. Here’s why: For personal health reasons, I became substantially behind in writing reviews during the last quarter of 2016. Thus, the submission of the Tobias Automotive of Anthem review was overlooked. Then, while recently reviewing businesses in Anthem, I remembered the MOSTLY POSITIVE experience with Tobias Automotive of Anthem in August of 2016. Since my experience with this Anthem business was 90% positive — ten months after the fact or not — I felt they deserved a positive review. I am happy the situation is rectified, and I will be using their services in the near future.

Update on my 2 Star Review from 6/15/2017: Andy Tobias called just like he said he would, and made everything right. Fixed my car for a reasonable agreed upon price, credited the $30 that they charged me, and my car is running beautiful. Every business will make mistakes or have hickups, but the sign of a true winner, is how you resolve customer issues when the owners are made aware of them. Once Mr Tobias found out about my issue at his shop (he had been out of town with his family) he immediately jumped to fix it and resolve the issue. Thank you Andy Tobias, you make America Great! I went from a very upset customer to a relieved and satisfied one. Took my Kia Optima in to have a full checkup. I had not kept up with any of the "recommended" tune ups etc and we drive the car alot, and its at 110K miles. So before things start breaking down, I wanted someone to look at it from head to toe. I took my car to Tobias based on reviews. For the most part the first part of the experience was fine, was charged $668 for brake fluid washout, and replacing a filter and shocks for the rear of the car. Here is where the issue comes in: right after I get the car back it starts shaking at high speeds. So we take it back in today, and I was told that my car needs all four brake pads, and all four rotors. Total cost to repair? $980. --- I asked why they didnt catch this in my first round, with warped rotors, and brakes that needed replacement? No good answer was given. After all of that, they had the assiduity to charge me $30 for the inspection of the brakes before I could pick up the car. I paid it and taking my business elsewhere.

Well lets start off with the good. The Anthem location is fairly new, up to date, and clean. Now the bad. The customer service here is quite appalling. I went in for an estimate on parts and labor, a procedure Ive done at several other auto shops, usually quick and easy. The gentleman assisting me asked me three times if I was sure about the year and model of my vehicle. 3 times. I nearly had to go pull the badge off my car to show him that it indeed was what I said it was. It took the best part of 20 minutes to finally get the printout of parts and labor costs, a process that takes about 5 minutes at most shops. Like any intelligent consumer I shop around, and do research on something before I buy it, automotive is no different. The bill was outrageously high, the parts twice the price they would be if I bought them myself at Orielly, which is just down the street. When I inquired about reducing the price for parts I was meant with harsh criticism and told if I wanted to pay the price Orielly had them for (almost certainly where they get the majority of their parts as its right down the street) that I should go buy them there and put them on myself, quite rudely I might add. I drove down the street to C&R Tire, got a quote for the same exact work for over $500 less than Tobias quoted me. And when inquiring about ways to reduce the cost the friendly customer service at C&R was willing to work with me, and throw in some additional work at no cost. Anyone who values their money and their car will avoid Tobias Auto.

After several trips to Tobias, I thought Id found a mechanic I could trust. Granted, all I asked them to do was change the oil and rotate the tires, but their prices seemed reasonable and I felt confident that if something bigger came along, they would be honest and competitive. WOW! Was I wrong. My manual called for the breaks to be checked at 65K so I added that to the oil change and tire rotation. I was informed that the battery tested bad, the front breaks needed replacing and the break lines needed flushing. Grand total? $600. Well, I can replace a battery, so I asked how much for just the break work. It was just under $400. So the battery was going to be $200! So I called around. Literally around. As in around the corner to Break Masters and ORiley Autoparts. Break Masters quoted me the break job for around $100 and ORiley quoted about the same for the battery and they would install it for free. So, Tobias, my "trusted" mechanic, was going to charge me (a repeat customer) $600 for work that the guys around the corner only charged $200. Summary? Im done with Tobias. Lie to me (to clarify, I have no reason to believe the staff at Tobias "lied" about anything), or try to take advantage of me and you lose me for everything. Make your own decision, but if Tobias gives you a quote, I suggest you do like the song says, and shop around!
