They call themselves a natural hair salon, but if your hair looks anything like Lupita Nyongos dont bother going in for a trim and style! They apparently arent trained (except for the one barber) on how to cut such hair. What they seem to know how to do really well, is take your natural hair and straighten it without chemicals. Thats it! If you want to wear your hair like Lupita, thats beyond their expertise. Heres how the fiasco started... I went online and booked for a basic haircut and put in the comments that I have short natural hair and would like a trim and style. I got a 3:00 appointment scheduled on 5/4/14 with Vashonda K. When someone called to confirm the appointment I again explained that I have very short hair and would like a trim. They assured me Vashonda is a skilled hair-cutter. When I got there, I had to wait 20 minutes before Vashonda came to talk to me. I showed her pictures on my phone of Yolanda Sangwenis (from Essence Magazine) short do which I really liked. Vashonda waved her hand at me and said she cant cut my hair because its a "barbering" cut and she doesnt do those. It requires clippers and she cant use those. I had no idea what she was talking about. All I needed was a haircut; and yes, of course it requires clippers. Wheres the challenge?! I mean these are supposed to be hair experts right? Apparently, the use of clippers takes extra training and the stylists do not get that training. Can you believe that crap?! Then she said I shouldve mentioned I needed a barbering cut over the phone. I shouldve mentioned?! Nevermind that Im not a hairdresser and dont know phrases like "barbering cut"! All I know is I have short natural african hair and need a haircut. Simple. She then left saying shed see if the barber had time to see me. Then a manager came over and told me they had me down for a shampoo only, not a haircut, She apologized for the confusion and said the barber could see me in one hour, at 4:30. So I sat and waited because where else was I going to go. My appointment was originally set for 3:00 and I had plans with friends at 4:00. So I called my friends and told them I was running late. I sat and waited. Another employee came and said the barber Andre would stop over and introduce himself to me shortly. Guess what, he didnt. In fact he walked right past me to get his next client. 4:30 came and went. At 4:40 there were no updates from any of the staff about my haircut. My time waiting was of no concern. Its ironic how when you book online, they call you to make sure youre coming, they send texts for you to confirm your appointment, they send another reminder text on the day of your appointment. But when youre sitting in the salon wasting YOUR time, and not theirs, they dont give you any updates. Its OK for you to wait, but dont keep them waiting!! I had to flag down the same manager from earlier and ask her what was up?! She said shed go check with Andre. She then came back and said sorry but it would be another half hour. Thats TWO hours after my appointment time. Needless to say I said thanks but no thanks and walked out. I told her they should be explicit on their website when they say they do natural hair, that they CANNOT do my version natural hair. Sad and pathetic for a black hair salon specializing in natural hair to not know what to do with my hair and to have me walk out of their salon two hours later, unserved. If all you know how to do is manipulate black hair into making it straight and wavy, youre not a natural hair salon! Ill never recommend the place or go back.

This is my first time ever writing on online review. I am transitioning to natural and I came for a specific tapered cut. Onye and I discussed the style in detail. I even expressed concern about having my near shoulder length hair cut by a new person. So we begin. The washing/conditioning treatment was fine - that was the easy part. Sidenote: this salon has stylist up stairs and downstairs. The salon is very clean with great decor. It seems like the other stylist were doing a bona-fide excellent job - I got the dud. So, she finished. Another stylist brought her client over to see the rodded style - that client walked away so fast I knew I was in trouble! Its time for the big reveal. Before she turns the chair I ask her if she is proud of her work. She comes back with, "you know - I mean". She turns me and I laugh - to keep from crying. What is this hack job called a haircut!! I did not get a tapered/flexi rod style. I got a rodded afro. Its hideous! I mean hideous! I am waiting for 10am (on Mothers Day) so I can get my hair TAPERED into the style I requested. Not to mention she only rodded the top because she liked my natural curl pattern so much. Its so bad my husband told me, " it looks good from a distance!!" My sons just stared in silence. Its so bad I cancelled my mothers day plans because I refuse to leave the house until I get MORE hair cut off to fix this mess. NEVER AGAIN ONYE @ TOO GROOVY - NEVER AGAIN!!

Should have been more wary from reading the reviews on here. If you were to walk into the salon, the idea that they are natural hair care specialists, would not be the first thought that comes to mind. The smell of heat-processed hair fills the air. Now, let me say, after years of my life spent in black hair salons, I find the smell oddly nice but screams straightened hair and that's what I saw all around me. Everyone around me was getting their hair blown out then flat ironed. The entire experience wasn't negative. The steam hydration, deep condition and shampoo was great. The cut was not. The stylist claimed to only be able to give me a good cut if my hair was straight which was not what I wanted. The stylist was respectful of that but picked my hair out into a big fro and used clippers (not shears) for my cut. Of course, unless my hair is in a fro, it doesn't look right. Despite my negative experience, I am going to give the salon another try but I will request a stylist who can work with natural hair in its natural state. Again, nice salon and nice staff because they are understanding and flexible just may not meet your hair needs.

Two words that come to mind when I think about my experience are disappointment and overrated. I have visited to this salon twice and both times was completely disappointed with my results. After my first visit I was merely dissatisfied with the style I got because it was a dated hairstyle that didnt suit my age (I am a teenager). I decided to style my hair at the salon one more time, but to my dismay my second experience was even worse. On this occasion I showed up 15 minutes early, but my service did not begin until 20 min after my scheduled appointment time. As the stylist was washing my hair she complained the entire time then left me in the washing station for 20 min not having finished washing my hair, and she never returned. Finally, my scheduled stylist began to do my hair but unfortunately when all was done she did not do a good job of styling my hair. Bottom line is I believe this salon is overpriced and highly overrated. It saddens me to think that women who just want to get their natural hair styled have to pay so much for less than mediocre results and unprofessional service.
