Took my car in for a free alignment check after replacing many front end parts on my 98 civic, Lower ball joints, outer tie rod ends, lower control arms, steering knuckles, brake rotors, calipers, and axles. As soon as I hand over my keys the gentleman asks if I just want to have the alignment done for 69.95. I said Id really like to see where my alignment was at first to see what would need adjusted. Again he states that since I replaced parts I would need to have it done anyway and they could get it done no problem. Again, I said no thanks how about you just check it first. Then I watched the shop tech push the clutch in and hit my front bumper on the curb since he didnt have the brake on when he put the clutch in, OUCH but whatever. They put the car on the alignment rack and gave me a printout saying that my camber on the front right was way out of spec at -1.5 degrees, partially true, but not that bad. The gentleman then told me that I would have to replace the lower ball joint, the one I had just replaced with an OEM honda ball joint. They never even mentioned the upper control arm which was the only remaining part that could throw the alignment off!! These guys are NOT honest and had the audacity to tell me to replace parts I had just replaced and were the reason why I wanted to check the alignment. Please go anywhere else!! I should mention that I did all the suspension work myself but dont have the resources to do my own alignment which is why I wanted them to check it. I highly recommend never going to this untrustworthy shop. They will put a Jihad on your wallet and didnt even examine the problem before suggesting replacement parts!!

I cant say enough good things about this Car-X in Ames. I first came to Car-X when I was looking for new new tires. Right away I was given multiple options and had the advantages versus price for each set laid out for me. I never felt pressured to make any decision on purchasing right away. After picking a set of tires they slapped them on and also did an oil change for me. Since that day I have gone back for oil changes and general maintenance on my vehicle. Anytime I go in I am greeted and treated with respect. I feel like my car is in great hands every time I go in. The crew is complete, detailed, and thoroughly checks over the vehicle when I bring it in. I lucked out finding this shop and I would highly recommend that you come here if you want a straightforward and good experience at the auto-service shop.

Took my SUV in to get the power steering looked and they said it was due to "someone not tightening a hose so fluid got everywhere when I got my serpentine belt replaced" Well I got it replaced at Car X and they still made me pay for it. Also they racked up a $3,100 estimate for "problems" my car had that Im positive they caused because I took my car to another shop and got it back to normal condition for less than $500. Screw Car X they are scam artists. Need I mention that my car ran perfectly fine before I took it to get the power steering looked at. They even tried to say it ran bad before I brought it in. I have more than one person to back me up saying it ran perfectly fine before hand. I spent unnecessary money for their own lack of knowledge and skill. Avoid this place unless you like being scammed.

After interacting with a local repair center I found that the manager there was attempting to overcharge me for brakes/rotors repairs and also tried to add 5-6 more "issues" in order to increase the cost. When questioned this manager was quite short and refused to budge on the costs, so I contacted Car-X to receive an estimate on the brakes/rotors repairs and it ended up being half the cost that it would have been if I had stayed with the local repair center. Not only was Car-X willing to work with me on the costs but they offered to go and pick up my vehicle for me from the local repair center to make it easier on me. They provided excellent customer service and were very polite and approachable, which is the best way to establish a good customer base in the community.

There is no one I trust more with my car than the team at Car X in Ames. I had an unfortunate occurrence where my motor blew and instead of charging me an arm in a leg for what I thought would be a minor thing, they showed honesty and genuine care for me. They suggested on where I would be able to find a new reliable car and then helped me tow my former car to Carneys. Ive been going to this Car X location for a year and a half and they have always done a great job with good prices, had great service and shown love for their customers. This review is by far no where adequate to show my gratitude, but its all I can do. So to everyone on Car Xs staff, thank you so much.

Real, honest, car repair. I brought my car in to get the ac fixed, they recharged the system and used the dye test to find any leaks, they ended up finding some leaks so i had them go ahead and fix it. The next day the ac was back to blowing hot air. Since they have a warranty with their work they recharged the system and looked for more leaks free of charge. After the second time that happened, they figured out the condenser was broken. Even on top of the two free freon recharges, they still had the best price in town to get the condenser fixed. John and his crew went above and beyond to get my car fixed in a timely manner.

Excellent customer service and a friendly staff. The mechanic informed me that the cost to replace my alternator and battery would be around $750 which I thought was high. He could tell I was put off by how much it was to replace a battery and informed me about a coupon online that would just about offset the cost of battery labor. At the end I went to pay and he told me that he found a nick on my serpentine belt and replaced it for no charge. They had replaced the serpentine belt, alternator, and battery in about an hour and a half. Overall I thought the service and speed was worth what I paid. Will come back again.

Car-X mechanics removed a mouse nest from my Buick air-conditioner vent system and de-odorized it thoroughly. They also upgraded the system to the current 134a and did an engine tune-up. The mechanic and manager could not have been more friendly and courteous. They thoroughly explained what needed to be done and kept me posted as the work progressed. The cost was not only fair but turned out to be slightly less than the original estimate. All the work was completed in one day, as promised, and the car runs and smells great! I heartily recommend the Ames Car-X for anyone who has automotive service needs.
