Ive been going to this Service Center for a couple years now to have my car serviced. During the last visit for an oil change it was recommended that I have my air filter changed and serpinteen belt replaced. These were both services I had declined at the time. After picking up car and heading home I noticed a distinct difference in the way the engine sounded. Upon further investigation when I got home I noticed the the air filter box lid was not tight against the box. I then noticed that the back screw had not been removed when the technition checked the air filter and upon lifting the lid breaking the back screw holder off which is why the lid would not fit back tightly against the box. I called Tuffy back the next morning to bring this to their attention. After they did some investigating he called me back and asked me to bring the car back in and they would replace the box and appoligized explaining this was not the way they did business. I was very pleased with the response from the owner. You probably wonder why now I give them a horrible review......keep reading! Fast forward 3 months later when its time for another oil change and tire rotation. I call for an appt at about 9 in the morning as the "owner" was making the appt for 2pm that day he asked me if I had issues the last time I was in as my account had a "no Service" flag. I explained the air filter box, which he had not comments on, and went ahead with the appointment. As I drop the car off that afternoon for the appt, Im met in the parking lot by the "owner" to tell me that because of the air filter situation from the last time he was refusing to complete the service and no longer wanted to do business with me. Also that during the last visit I only had an express service complete (oil change) and I guess referring to that they didnt touch the air filter. Essentially calling me a liar........ This was a complete shock to me so I asked him why he didnt call me prior to showing up for the appointment to let me know they would no longer service the car, which his response was "he owns the business and he decides who he does business with" not really an appropriate answer you should get from a business owner. Being a little irritated now, I pulled my reciept from the last visit and took it back so they could see where they noted I needed an air filter and the cost of replacement and I needed the belt and cost of replacement. Seems strange that he claims they never touched the air filter box, yet they try to sell me a new air filter and the cost of the service. How would you know if it needed replaced unless it was checked. As mentioned in another review, if all you need is an oil change, move on, they dont want your business. Sounds more like bate and switch scam, get you in for a free inspection or cheap oil change and then try to upsell additional maintenance and when you dont buy, watch out. I think anyone reading this should seriously think about choosing a different place to have your car serviced. As you can read from other reviews Im not the only person to have problems with this location.

I just went to the Tuffy shop in Ankeny and was very displeased with the customer service I experienced. I have been getting my oil changed from this site ever since I began driving and have never had an issue prior to this. They have always been friendly and helpful. NOT TODAY! I needed to get my oil changed and went in and explained what service I wanted and mentioned that I had noticed an issue with the passenger rear wheel brake and wondered what he advised. He mentioned they offered free brake inspection and would take a look and let me know what they discovered. I was still very satisfied at this point. My girlfriend had also been having issues with her car starting properly so I had her bring her vehicle in at the same time and we were going to use a coupon from the paper for a free inspection. I understand doing a free inspection with no other services is tacky so I wanted to do it when I was getting my car serviced. Her car had been in to get its last oil change a month or two ago and they mentioned that the wheel bearing was needed replaced. We never mentioned to them to look at the bearings or to figure out the issue. They offered to us. So on this visit they asked if we had gotten the bearings serviced and I replied that we had at a different auto shop in town. I continued that I enjoyed Tuffys oil changes but that I usually had other work done at the other shop. He replied that he did not appreciate us using his resources when we werent planning on having the vehicle serviced with them. But we never asked them to look at the bearings. It was very unprofessional and not handled well. They looked at the brakes on my car and he asked me to come look; he showed me that much work was needed done to them. He wondered if I wanted an estimate or if I was just going to go to the other shop. I told him that I preferred to price check with other shops before having any major work done on my vehicle. Again, he just treated me poorly and made me feel like I was in the wrong for them offering free services. If they are unwilling to do those free services cheerfully then I suggest they not do them at all! I explained that I had been having my oil changed with them for several years and that I didnt appreciate the way I was being treated. He explained to me that they made very little money off oil changes. I asked if that made me less of a customer than someone who gets all their work done with them. Your mission statement is, or at least it reads, that your goal is to have satisfied customers. Not just customers who get more than their oil changes done with you. He also told me that they wouldnt be losing anything by me having my oil changed at the other shop. I replied that maybe I would have to do that since I was irritated by this point. And his response sealed my decsion-that he would prefer I did. He may think that he only lost my oil change business, but he couldnt be more wrong. He lost the reputation for the entire chain. I will NEVER ever refer anyone to Tuffy again. I will explain the horrible experience I received and the lack of respect and customer service that your personnel display.

I would NOT recommend them to anyone! Very friendly people but their pricing is outrageously padded. I had them look at my stepsons car and quote me on a belt replacement. I live about 2 hrs away so I thought it would be easier than driving out to Ankeny. They wanted $370 to replace the water pump and main serpentine belt. Said itd take an hour labor. This is on a 2002 Mercury Sable with a Duratec engine. An easy job and the parts are cheap. I worked in and managed a repair shop for several years (large trucks) so I can understand an hour minimum labor and an acceptable markup on parts. The belts cost 7.99 and 34.99 at OReillys a few miles away from them. So either they mark up parts 690% or they charge $300/hour for labor. Either way something stinks there. I saved hundreds by driving out there (and back), bought my kid supper, and bought the belts and put them on my self in the parking lot across from Tuffy. It took me all of 10 minutes and two common hand tools. How do these snakes sleep at night? Haha. What a ripoff. Anyone using Tuffys in Ankeny should get another mechanics opinion first. They seem like theyd be a really great shop if theyd just have some honest pricing.
