I ordered a package from Swanson. I forgot about it for a few weeks, then I was so sick, I really didn’t even care about it. When I finally did check w/Swanson they got back to me after a few days said it had been delivered in September and gave me a tracking #. I called the Hopkins post office this morning, they sent someone out to check on it; it was still in the mail box where packages are delivered. Obviously, there was never a key put in my individual mailbox. Rather than leaving the package there and just putting a key in my mailbox, in typical government fashion, the package was returned to the post office and I was told I would have to make a special trip to pick it up. I cannot get there before 6:00, when the post office closes, for quite a while. I was told that because I waited so long to contact them, they could not leave it in the box. What sense does that make? I was not aware there was a time limit within which a package had to be taken out of the box. I did not get a key, nor any kind of a reminder that the box was still there, even though the carrier had to have known there was a problem if I wasn’t picking up the package. Since I cannot get there before 6:00 I called the post office back and told them to return the package to sender, even though that is not what I would prefer to do. Am wondering why the package could not have just been left in the package box and a key put in my mailbox. Would that not have been more time and cost efficient, than hauling the box back to the post office and requiring me to take off work early, and stand in line to get the package. This makes no sense, however, it is the typical government way of doing things, taking the most time and incurring the most waste of time, money and personnel. Really stupid, wasteful, inefficient way of doing things. All that was needed was to put the key in my mailbox, just a few feet from my front door. Instead they took the box back to the post office, then I was supposed to take off work early, stand in line, have the post office worker look for the package.

Great location and good service. On my last visit there I was pleasantly surprised by the positive and helpful service, and just a rare enthusiasm that you barely see at post offices anymore. The person who helped me was easy to work with; I think his name was Chris. He did a great job, was very knowledgeable and courteous. It got pretty busy after i got there but he was very efficient and also helped me throughout my whole transaction. Just wish the employees at the main post office downtown would also provide great service like this, - or at the very least have a better attitude. The main post office on 1st street is just a few blocs from my apt. building but i virtually stopped going there because of the terrible service downtown. I know this doesn’t relate at all to the Hopkins location but I just wanted to share my typical experience at the main office in downtown Mpls. I am thankful for the extended weekday hours they have there, but i keep receiving consistently terrible service and have yet to see more than 2 people open at once - no matter how long the line is. I am a realist and a pretty upbeat person but i hate to admit that i just stopped expecting good service from anyone there. Most employees at the main location are just beyond lazy and even rude (especially a slightly heavier white gal with blondish hair) I have personally witnessed FOUR separate customer issues and/or complaints with her service. Last time she made a very rude and inappropriate comment to my fiance that turned everyones heads. Please pass this on to them if you can, otherwise their bad service and unprofessional treatment of customers might get them on the news or into another newspaper article sooner than later. Thanks for your time!

In my experience, the people who work in this post office are very friendly. Do they move a bit slower than you would like? Maybe. Are they a bit too chatty with some customers? Maybe. But this is not a fast food restaurant. Its the post office. And I must say that these employees move far faster, and are far friendlier, than the employees of any UPS place that I have ever visited. I have a PO Box at this Hopkins location and regularly have giant packages delivered. These people always lug my giant packages up to the desk with a smile and a great attitude. They genuinely care to do things right and are genuinely friendly in their interactions. I dont know how many times these folks have gone out of their way to help me. On the matter of the phone never being answered, I agree. I have yet to call and have anyone answer the phone there. But, to me, Id rather go in person than call anyway. Its a truly great group of people working at this location.

Google should provide Negative STARS or maybe just an icon for "Black Hole". If anyone wants to know why the USPS has so many problems, just spend a few hours at the Hopkins Post Office. I say Hours, because no one gets in or out of this place in minutes. One recent scenario: Holiday Season, 20+ people waiting in line when doors open, ONE clerk at the register, ONE!!!!. The automated shipping unit is broken, the supervisor is wandering thru the crowd without a clue, assisting NO ONE. It isnt until 20 minutes past 9:00 that another employee arrives to a register; still the first customer at the counter. Too many other similar incidents to even bother with; from employees just walking away from their position for "break-time" with 10 people in line, to ornery. unhappy employees being unfriendly or cordial. Ive tried to put up with this pathetic excuse for a business for years.; Im done. FED EX/UPS, Heck, PONY EXPRESS would be a better option!

Not only is it very hard to get a hold of anyone, but I have had the worst experience with this post office. I had requested my new forwarding address to start in 2 weeks and I had a package delivery; a very expensive package delivery and the carrier mailed it to my new address, where I am not living at yet. Then since this package was coming from the UK they are still waiting for this package to return back to them from the wrong address they sent it to. It has been weeks and this whole situation happened on 1/29/16 where it was "unable to deliver to sender" because I was not at my new address yet. I understand mistakes happen, but I have had to call this post office numerous times and I am still waiting to hear back to find out where this package is.

I use USPS often, as their options tend to be on the cheaper side in terms of postage. With this location, everyone is super friendly and willing to help. As long as you understand what youre sending OR even simply courteous to the employees, you will get great service. Also to the folks who are upset and impatient about shipping packages during the holidays, also consider...its the holidays. And workers should be allowed to have a break. Its a post office, not a fast food restaurant.
